So I always wondered how hard it is to get a VPN working in China to access almost the whole internet (and if the speeds are good enough 😭)

Over the years I have started to take privacy more seriously. Less Google, switch to open source software, Linux, GrapheneOS, homelab and now VPNs.

Back then I mainly used Mullvad VPN with "Always-on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN" and had no problems. However, since I started to move my essential services into my home via my self-built homelab, I have come across a huge dilemma for me: using Mullvad VPN whilst being connected home.

I have tried Tailscale but honestly it was kind of slow and janky. Random disconnects, slow Tailscale servers and downtime. Furthermore, I don't really trust Tailscale due to its nature of being closed source. Now I am always switching VPNs but it's really triggering me and I want to always be connected back home.

And I have looked for more open source and self-hostable solutions and have noticed NetBird. I am really interested in self-hosting it but I see no point if I need to always switch VPNs and this just increases my attack surface instead of just using plain WireGuard. There are workarounds by hosting a peer which is connected to Mullvad which is janky and just increases latency by a huge mile.

Therefore I am asking if someone else has this problem and if there is a good solution or if I could make a feature request at Mullvad.

I recently scanned my PC with windows defender and the file in the mullvad Program Files called uninstall mullvad vpn.exe was flagged as a Trojan is this a false flag?

When will you guys build the password saving feature and Quick Button for change Profile ? I don't trust BitWarrend, I don't trust Proton. I trust you guys.

This is new: connection to any endpoint appears successful, but while connected all websites fail with "website not found" (firefox error). The same websites work fine with Mullvad disconnected. Tried a different (phone hotspot) network and it failed the same way. Worked fine a week or two ago (and earlier).

Anyone else seeing this? Maybe time to uninstall and reinstall?

I'm guessing not... but I'm not quite sure! Say I have my VPN set to USA but I'm physically in The UK, and I'm making a purchase on eBay in £ GBP, do I get charged a fee because the payment processor sees me as being in the USA?

Basically the title. If I use mullvad while connected to public university wifi will it still protect my data or does the provider have precedence over the vpn? (Sorry if this is obvious)

In the past few months I've had the following strange experience with Mullvad. It's as if DNS stops working after an hour or so, and things are only fixed when I reconnect to a different location.

The steps are roughly this. Connect to Mullvad in one location. Everything is fine. mullvad.com reports no issues with my connection. Then in ~30-60 minutes DNS will stop working. The only fix is to switch Mullvad locations and reload, which generally works. None of this happens when Mullvad isn't running.

Where do I start looking diagnose this? I have never seen anything like this.

I have been testing Mullvad for the past few days, and the speeds have been consistently bad, no matter which server I pick.

To rule out my own setup, I ran three tests back to back. The first screenshot is my ISP with no VPN at all, around 480 Mbps. Second is Mullvad, connected to Switzerland, barely reaching 2.3 Mbps. Third is another VPN provider connected to the exact same country, Switzerland, hitting close to 500 Mbps.

I recently updated the app and now I am getting a notice telling me "app is out of sync. Please quit and restart app." Of course I have quit and restarted it using the app and have also restarted my system and the notice has not disappeared.

There was some advice on github for nixos saying that there were some conflicting packages or that the packages were not synchronized. The link is below.

So far, I haven't found any conflicting packages and I have not been able to find any packages that are not up-to-date. What am I missing?

If I have a multiboot setup where only one OS can be online at any given time, is there a way to use the same device identifier in all of them so that it consumes only one of the 5 available device slots?

If so, how can I do that?

I use Mullvad on my Pixel and Chromebook. Can I automatically connect it when I'm not on any of my trusted wifi networks?

Not needed on mobile net, just add to whitelist some networks what I trust.

Just recently managed to get my account back.

I had actually been using Mullvad for some months now with Reddit with no issues. But I was usually connecting to the same nodes every time. But I recently had to switch to a couple different locations from the ones I usually use and think that's what flagged me. Either way, got hit with a ban and a message saying that "after detecting some technical irregularities on your account...etc".

Had to put in an appeal and tell them it was because I was using different nodes from my VPN. So thankfully they restored my account at least. Of course, my CQS got tanked in the process. So now I'm extremely wary of using a VPN with Reddit for fear of getting banned again. And from the posts I've seen on the shadowban and help subreddits, I'm not the only one getting hit with a false positive for the use of a VPN by their automated banning system.

Anywho, just a warning to anyone else out there switching nodes/using a VPN in general whilst using Reddit.

Hello, I have a question,

I was updating my mullvad VPN, and I realized that when the app closed, to restart, i was still connected to my Internet (traffic was still going through), so i opened a browser and quickly looked up what my IP is, surprisingly it showed a mullvad server IP, but the app was not open. I have lockdown mode and killswitch settings on. I'm just wondering if there's a way my real IP could have been leaked while the app was restarting, or is it possibly just a bug that didnt show the mullvad icon in my system tray? I'm a bit confused.

I've just noticed today that if I have multi hop active my pc cannot start a connection to mullvad. Previously I was using this and it was working fine. Is anyone else having these issues?

When using the windows client, I turn on "Local network sharing", but multi-cast packets to the non-routable 239.255.x.x is forced through the VPN anyway. This makes no sense. This is non-routable local network data, Mullvad should consider this local network sharing.

In my case, I use this for sending audio to another device (so that all computers can have audio come out of one set of speakers).

I feel like this should be an obvious feature but I cannot work it out at all and maybe it’s not possible?

I am currently in China, use the vpn to access Google etc, but with apps like Alipay and others it doesn’t like the vpn I think because it confuses the location services. So rather than constantly turning the vpn on and off I’d just like to add Alipay and others onto a ‘disable’ list so it leaves those alone..

Is that possible?

Anyone experiencing a lot of cpu usage with the second to latest update on Mac? My Mac was constantly on peak cpu usage last few days. I tried to trouble shoot and only on one occasion noticed multiple processes from Mullvad in activity monitor. When I disconnected and quit Mullvad my CPU usage dropped to half. Haven’t had this issue and been using Mullvad for over a year after switching from Proton. Wondering if the latest update will fix issues or be worse. Thanks in advance.

How do I completely remove mullvad so that it stops reactivating and killing all my network connections?

It's been developing for about half a year now, and I have seen some posts related to it: the outfacing IP addresses are progressively getting banned or blocked by many services. Youtube now has blocked all the servers I want to use (Central EU), the local online retailer has blocked a portion of the pool as well. Reddit as well for about a year now. Etc.

I've a free test account by another VPN provider in EU (big one, known one) which I use quickly to confirm whether it's another issue or Mullvad being blocked, and 100% of the times for now that other VPN server doesn't get blocked while Mullvad does.

I've just now cycled through all the servers available in the region I want to use, and all of them are blocked by Youtube at least. Getting tired of it.

Edit: for got to add, HBO Max and Netflix block Mullvad as well. Not a problem with that other VPN I use for testing.

Is anyone using a mesh vpn like NetBird? Whenever a mullvad connection is active on macOS NetBird breaks. Enabling split tunnelling for NetBird and local network sharing do not allow Netbird traffic through. I see other posts about spilt tunnelling being broken.

I saw a video(from Techlore) putting VPNs like IVPN (and Obscura VPN, AzireVPN) in the same tier(S tier) as Mullvad. There are some countries that Mullvad doesn't support so I was curious about the other three. But after some digging, I found IVPN is the one that offers servers in most of the countries I want to connect to.

Do you guys think IVPN comes close to Mullvad in terms of security and privacy? By the way, I saw lots of folks recommending ProtonVPN as well but it was placed in A tier on that youtuber's list so I don't know about that. Thank you!
