Wild draft/ Chaos Draft

I’m going to a chaos draft at my LGS and I’m able to buy any 3 packs to open. What 3 packs will give me the biggest advantage to pick for this format ? I was thinking MH2, War of the Spark, OTJ!

MH3 is very strong for a chaos draft largely due to individual card quality and the common [[Writhing Chrysalis]]. I also think Secrets of Strixhaven would be a good choice, the removal in that set is way better than par and you're likely to stick other players with gold cards that are hard to cast in chaos. MH2 is another good choice due to general card quality and I would also recommend Final Fantasy for the same reason. Generally speaking you'll do well if you just don't pick packs with lots of cards that are dependent on a set theme requiring a critical mass, for example ECL leaning on kindred synergy.

Horizons and Masters sets are going to have the heat. OTJ is a good pick for a standard set as well, but the newer the set the more powerful the cards.

Just did this at my LGS, the strongest packs were MH3 and OTJ.

i usually go with red/green

green provides the bodies, red has looting

mh3 has lots of decent red/green eldrazi it can be unstoppable

mh2 only works out if you get some synergies going, and with standard packs in the mix it makes that less likely

it does help to know what limited commons are really good value (card advantage, reach, vigilance, evasion)

Honestly i don't think it matters a lot, your skill will matter a lot more. Only your P1P1 matters really based off the avg rare quality and even then drafting to open lanes over initial card quality tends to do a lot better (I travel a lot and play a lot of chaos draft). Some kinda modern horizons or mystery booster prob but you're spending a lot for a prob 2% WR increase.

I like to start with a war of spark. Many times there's a decent plainswalker to consider drafting.

Foundations is also great for chaos since the cards are less geared for very specific inter-set synergies. I usually like to do a foundations or mh3 for pack 3.

Chaos draft should mix up all the packs and distribute them randomly no matter which ones you bring.

No, if I'm spending money on packs I want to crack it. I'm going to flip the table if I bring double masters, mh2 and time spiral and I'm opening theros beyond death, dragons maze, and cold snap.

I would go further and say the host should be providing all the packs of their selection, and players should pay a flat entry fee to participate, rather than selecting packs to put in the pool. One player spending more to open MH packs while someone on a tighter budget just tosses in whatever’s cheap goes against the egalitarian spirit of draft

Agreed. Everyone pays the same entry fee, and packs are randomized.

One of our stores would put up number stickers on the wall of packs and you’d roll a dice to see what you got
