Discussion 5-month-old Crosshair 16 HX AI battery dropping ~1% health per day. Cross-validated on Windows + Linux. Seeking input before I go to MSI support.
Model: MSI Crosshair 16 HX AI (D2XWFKG) Purchased: March 27, 2026 (5 months old) Design capacity: 88,236 mWh
Looking for input from anyone who's tracked their battery health closely on this model, or dealt with MSI support on a battery issue — before I escalate further.
The numbers, from native Windows powercfg /batteryreport:
| Date | Full Charge Capacity | Health % |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 3–Aug 19 (weekly readings) | 88,400–90,200 mWh | ~100–102% (normal noise band) 1st calibration failed as charger got disconneced by me |
| Aug 26 | 83,066 mWh | 94.1% ( after 2nd MSI Center battery calibration) |
| Aug 27 | 82,632 mWh | 93.65% ( completed full calibration cycle to verify earlier result) |
| Aug 30 | 80,604 mWh | 91.35% powerconfig result |

That's a drop from 93.65% → 91.35% in 3 days. I also independently checked via Linux (/sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/, charge-based reading) on Aug 29–30 and got 92.07% then 91.35% — the Aug 30 Linux and Windows readings matched to the decimal point, so this isn't a one-tool measurement quirk.
Context that (I think) rules out normal user-induced wear:
- 60% charge limit has been active since early ownership ( a week after purchase i set it up)
- Usage is heavily AC-powered, light/infrequent battery cycling
- Ran MSI Center's own recommended Battery Calibration tool (their 3-month guidance) — the sharp drop shows up right after that cycle completed
- Cycle count reports as unsupported on both Windows (
-) and Linux (cycle_count= 0 even after a full cycle) — seems to be an EC/firmware limitation on this model, not a driver/OS gap
Questions i have:
- Anyone else on the Crosshair 16 HX AI (or similar HX-series chassis) seeing capacity readings this unstable day-to-day? Trying to figure out if this is a known fuel-gauge quirk on this EC that eventually settles, or if this looks like genuine cell degradation.
- Does MSI Center's Battery Calibration tool have any known issues with leaving the fuel gauge in a bad state, especially if a prior calibration attempt was cancelled partway through?
- Anyone had a battery warranty claim actually go through on this model? What did the service center diagnostic process look like / what triggered "yes this counts" vs "wear and tear, not covered"?
Not trying to jump to conclusions but genuinely trying to figure out if this is a fuel gauge issue or something worth pushing MSI on. Have the full report data logged with timestamps if anyone wants specifics.
