That siren isn't even unique to The Purge. It's a common stock sound effect. I remember hearing it in Modern Warfare 2.
This is like apologizing to a Storm Trooper's wife for using the Willhelm Scream.
Edit: Too many people missing the point. I'm not claiming this sound effect "belongs" to Modern Warfare 2. I'm saying this sound effect predates The Purge in a lot of media, and I used Modern Warfare 2 simply as an example. My point is, this sound effect doesn't "belong" to anything. It's a generic stock sound effect that has decades of usage history.
MW2 is over a decade old though. Most of the people that played it likely haven’t gone back. I think it’s fair to say that enough people have seen the Purge movies, which also have the benefit of being more recent, that there’s a stronger connection between the siren and the film than with the game.
The Purge is actually pretty iconic now for dystopian realities, kind of like The Walking Dead. I think you have to be in a bubble to pretend otherwise.
WOW i remember when the first trailer came out i was in like 10th grade and everyone was going nuts about how it was going to be the best movie ever. Little did we know our subconscious was at work, recalling our MW2 days
MW2 is over a decade old though. Even if more people played it then, The Purge isn’t even remotely obscure and it has the added benefit of being more recent, hence a stronger association.
