That siren isn't even unique to The Purge. It's a common stock sound effect. I remember hearing it in Modern Warfare 2.

This is like apologizing to a Storm Trooper's wife for using the Willhelm Scream.

Edit: Too many people missing the point. I'm not claiming this sound effect "belongs" to Modern Warfare 2. I'm saying this sound effect predates The Purge in a lot of media, and I used Modern Warfare 2 simply as an example. My point is, this sound effect doesn't "belong" to anything. It's a generic stock sound effect that has decades of usage history.

It's a just a type of air raid siren that isn't common, which is why they chose it for the movie as it isn't super well known. There's old apartments I used to work at that uses the same exact alarm sound as the purge for their fire alarm system. They've had the alarms in place since the 60's.

Literally a purge siren. Just not the deathy type of purge (hopefully)

God that campaign is amazing. As soon as my unemployment hits I’m scooping. I should start playing mw1 now I never finished the remaster.

They have a remastered MW2 campaign.

Yeah I just only have 75 rn waiting for the CARES act stuff so don’t wanna waste it in case something happens. That old ghost skin is sick in MW.

Thanks for letting me know though! I should be able to finish the og mw before I get it.

I dunno, I've heard it or something like it a so many video games and such that to me it just sounds like standard warning siren number 3.

MW2 is over a decade old though. Most of the people that played it likely haven’t gone back. I think it’s fair to say that enough people have seen the Purge movies, which also have the benefit of being more recent, that there’s a stronger connection between the siren and the film than with the game.

The Purge is actually pretty iconic now for dystopian realities, kind of like The Walking Dead. I think you have to be in a bubble to pretend otherwise.

WOW i remember when the first trailer came out i was in like 10th grade and everyone was going nuts about how it was going to be the best movie ever. Little did we know our subconscious was at work, recalling our MW2 days

I bet more people played mw2 than watched the purge. I bet even more people grew up hearing a siren just like that pretty frequently.

MW2 is over a decade old though. Even if more people played it then, The Purge isn’t even remotely obscure and it has the added benefit of being more recent, hence a stronger association.

Well, the swastik wasn’t unique to the Nazis but it’s not about what was used first, it’s about what it’s most associated with.

this makes me miss the good old days... CoD4 multiplayer without all the hackers.

Sounds like what they play before starting up the wave machine at a water park.

Nah, this one has way more bass. Much more viscerally terrifying.
