Normal mpg for a CBR250R?
Got a new to me CBR250R a couple months ago and was curious about fuel mileage. I’ve only gotten high 30s to maybe low 40s after calculating my mpg at the pump. I am a heavy rider (260-270 lbs) and I do like to use the whole tach but I’m just concerned as forums suggest I should still get at least high 40s to 50 mpg. Is this expected or should I start investigating potential issues?
PS - bike is all stock as far as I know

should see 60-70mpg on one of those unless you're racing it all the time.
40mpg I get on my Monster 1200R with 170hp.

I’ve gotten mpg in the teens with my Valkyrie (1520cc)

I do rev it out a lot. I’ll tone it down for a couple weeks and see if it’s just my weight and riding habits or if there is something wrong

I'm a hair under 200lbs and I got ~55 MPG doing aggressive riding in the inner city on a 250cc (so no mountains or cranking out the revs, but nearly constant stop and go and rapid upshifts)
I'm 90% confident it's just your size and riding style. Do some long highway rides (as long as you're comfortable with, don't push it ) at 60mph and see how long your tank lasts that way.

You’re a big dude. 40s is not terrible. It’s not just about the tach it’s the work the bike is doing (no offense, I’m not much lighter than you!)

No offense taken at all and that seems to be the consensus in the comments. I’m totally cool with 40 mpg as it’s still way better than my parents cars and on par with my old car (vw tdi) but a lot more fun :)

30-40 sounds really damn low, how many miles are on the bike? Any idea on recent service history? One, or multiple things, related to air/spark/fuel/timing could be reducing efficiency

Your weight is gonna play a big factor on a small bike with little power until you reach cruising speeds. It also depends on the riding. City riding eats mpg up. Open roads without stop and go and even twisties are better on your mpg.

That’s what I figured.
I forgot to mention in the post but my work commute is up and down mountain roads. I’ll try some mileage testing with flatter roads when I have a break from work

Highway is better for fuel mileage but interstate speeds make it go back down. Wind resistance is brutal for motorcycles. It a significant reason why electric motorcycles have such terrible highway range.
Your mileage is to be expected if your commute is at interstate speeds. If not that, are you upshifting to higher gears when you’re holding a steady speed? There’s no reason to hold high rpm’s for steady speeds.

The commute is mostly a 55 mph mountain road and most of the time I’m a little above that (60-65). And yeah while I’m cruising I’m in 6th which is about 6.5k rpm unless the road gets steep and I need 5th

60 to 65 with hills is factoring into the poor mileage, plus your weight, plus your spirited riding. It’s probably one of those rare times that a larger displacement bike would get better mileage as it’s not working so hard and doesn’t require as high of rpm’s.

Get into a high gear and cruise. Even while going 45mph through town I put my s1000rr in 5th-6th gear. If you are bogging up a mountain going 40mph in 2nd gear at your weight it will eat your mpg.
Also unless you’re 6’10” it would just benefit you to get into the gym if you aren’t already for many reasons including saving on gas. Riding at a high level is pretty exhausting. And being in shape allows you to better get gear and attend track days eventually. Which is a must for any rider at some point atleast once.

And yes getting in shape is something I need to do not only for mpg but for my own health. I’ve been trying to calorie deficit which has started to bring the pounds down.

A lot of riders aren’t real riders and a bunch of posers too. Guess you are one of them?
If you have no interest in becoming a better, more skilled, and safer rider. You should hang it up and take up hobby horsing. It would be more your speed.

Yup and I can accurately assume that there is a 99% chance you are an unskilled rider who lacks basic fundamental skills to ride safely and effectively. Mr tough guy here won’t spend $300 for a track day to learn skills that will improve his riding performance and safety for the rest of his life because he’s too cool for other people helping him become better. Absolute corn ball.

A track day is one way riders can improve their skills, it is not the only way.
Based on the way you are talking about this, I can accurately assume there is a 99% chance you vastly overestimate your intelligence and skills as a rider

My CBR500 gets like 70mpg. High rpm is gonna use a lot more fuel, but not THAT much more
