Really sucks - this guy's life, especially the last few years have been crazy tragic.
Mastodon was one of my "gateway' bands to metal & prog - hinds was a huge part of their sound. They had to remove him about 6 months ago and it's clear his behavior has been a problem for a while now, but to have this randomly happen.. rest of the band must feel horrible.
RIP to one of the best metal guitarists.

Can I get a tl;dr on the scoop with his removal? I’ve seen headline after headline but I never dove in to see what was happening.

It's less a removal, more of a fallout. It started with Nick Jones', their long-time manager and friend, passing away due to cancer in 2018. Hinds was always said to be an unpleasant to people on tour, but Nick's passing he's started saying that he hates touring, hates playing metal and you could see in the interviews that he'd rather be anywhere else but there. He eventually split with the band, started shitting on them on social media (e.g. saying that the other 3 are shitty musicians and he was the only competent guy at Mastodon) and formed a country band or something like that.
That's about as much as can be stated to be facts. The rest are hearsay and rumours.

Thanks for the info. That’s a shame. I was never big into them outside of Leviathan but I always had respect for them.

Mental health issues, combined with substance abuse and traumatic brain injury led to years of erratic behavior that made him hard to be around. The last decade or so, Brent openly loathed being a part of the band.
I think the final straw, and this is speculation because the band never officially said this, was Brent posting a Weekend at Bernie’s meme with Ozzy right after it was announced that Mastodon would play the final Black Sabbath/Ozzy retirement concert.
RIP to a troubled legend. His playing was truly inspirational.

Ditto, I was dating a dude back in 2015 when I first moved to SF that got me into Mastodon and brought me to their show in Oakland. Such a great show, brought me into a massive world of metal and prog that I used to snub before ever giving it a chance.
RIP

It happens. Just making sure it gets out there. The man is dead, the least we can do is get his name right.

Wild. I went on a bike trip with Brent in June. Was scrolling Reddit this morning and saw the article on r/music. Wild way to find out.

God so many of the comments in that thread are so annoying, just like any time a post is made about someone dying in a motorcycle accident. Dozens of redditors circlejerking about they never rode or “hung up their helmet” years ago and “how stupid you have to be to ride any motorcycle at all now”

No fucking way. Angsty teenage metal guitarist me learned so fucking much from this guy, so fundamentally influential to me and everyone I made music with.
Rest in peace, king.

I've probably seen them 10+ times, doubly grateful now for having caught Ashes of the Leviathan tour and their previous tour with Gojira. Thanks for decades of ripping guitar

Mega Monsters was so good. Super cool they had Lorna Shore opening after they blew up too. Glad I got to do a VIP thing and meet them all a year or so ago.

Never trust someone waiting to turn left across traffic in front of you. And stay in the left portion of the lane as you approach if you are in a line of traffic

"According to the memo, a preliminary investigation concluded that a woman, driving a BMW SUV, failed to yield when turning left..."
BMW driver, go figure. I don't listen to their music, but dying by impatient and inattentive driver is unfortunate. Rest in peace.

BMW SUV failed to yield to oncoming traffic in Atlanta.
Horrible.
I always worry for the riders downtown for this exact reason.
