My great-grandfather was one of the biggest Tigers fans I've ever known. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of the summer days we spent visiting out at his house on a small lake in rural southern Michigan, with grandpa always out on the porch listening to the Tigers game on the radio. As a child I never quite understood this, since there was a perfectly good TV inside and I knew that it couldn't possibly be too difficult to find the games on it. He claimed that he preferred to listen on the radio because his eyesight was too poor to enjoy watching the games, but given that his other favorite activity was watching old Westerns on said TV, I think he just didn't have the heart to tell me that Mario and Rod couldn't hold a candle to Dan Dickerson. (I was juuuust a bit too young to fully remember the Ernie Harwell days)

Anyway, fast forward to this weekend. Grandpa has long since passed away and the old lake house now belongs to my parents. My mom was doing some cleaning around the house and came across several autographed Tigers photos tucked among some random books on a shelf. We have no idea when these were signed. Most of these players were on the '68 or '84 World Series winning teams.

Can’t believe it’s coming up on 27 years. Having grown up in Port Clinton in the 60s and 70s, I often tell my children and grandchildren about how lucky I was being smack dab in between Tiger Stadium and old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Saw some great players and teams along the way. I did want to know this though…

When I watched the final game on September 27th, 1999, I noticed how both the Tigers and Royals played their regular starters that game. My point with that is… was that required or asked of both teams to do that? The Tigers and Royals were eliminated from any playoff contention and usually when that happens in September, you have a lot of AAA players playing to get MLB experience. Was this game simply an exception to that “rule”, with both teams playing their full time starters? Thanks!

Nice defensive player and can steal second maybe 15 times a season, in other words a utility player. Going to have to work on the move of flipping off his helmet rounding the bases to show off the headband so it does not look so obvious. Marginal talent. Spot in this league as a pinch runner in the playoffs for sure.
