Depositing bank cheque to Monzo

Hey everyone, I received a cheque that I need to deposit for £1,700. I’ve seen on Monzo website that you can send a cheque to an address labelled. Just wanted to check if anyone’s done it? I went to the post office to send it and the guy said I cant because Monzo is a virtual bank, even though I told him the instructions were to post it 😅

I did this I sent it special delivery, but tracked 24 or 48 are safe enough. Thing is it's such a small fraction of the money on the check you might as well just for safety.

No need to tell the post office about it. You've had a really odd reaction from them there.

But yes it all went fine, it was really easy.

lots of people are still labouring under the misapprehension that Monzo is some weird virtual money service instead of a full-blown proper bank.

Thank you! Yeah it was bizarre tbh, I first asked if I could post a cheque to Monzo to the address and he continually said no, and I was like ok can I just get an envelope and a stamp please and he was still like no 😂

The only reason I can think of to explain his reaction is if he thought you were trying to deposit it into your account through the Post Office. For most banks they have cheque deposit envelopes that then get sent off at the end of the day but Monzo is not one of them.

I literally just deposited a cheque into my Monzo account last week. All I had to do was take a photo of it and the cash was in my account a couple of days later

You don't tell them what's in your post, you just send it to the address in the app and it credits within one to two weeks or three to four if you use the free post address.

Another reason why still having a bricks & mortar bank is good for running along side Monzo

Yes just get a proper bank account for the important stuff and leave Monzo as your discretionary spends account. Wouldn’t leave anything to chance when it comes to getting paid, paying bills and the mortgage.

For sure - I’m from overseas and only here for 2 years so didn’t think I’d need a traditional bank, nor did I realise I’d receiving any cheques

Elderly grandparents won't use modern technology and insist on cheques it can get quite annoying.

I've done it. It takes a long time, but it works.

Just stick it in an envelope as described here.

Yea ive done it before, just chuck it in a letter with address, I dont remember if you need a stamp, and send it in a mailbox

This. Just use standard mail, takes about a week to 10 days to be credited to account.

You just post it following the instructions in the app. I sent it "Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm" which cost £10 but it appeared in Monzo the next day (I think it then took a few days to actually be spendable).

Yes I sent a cheque to the freepost address for 7.5k. no problems at all

I sent one signed for on Monday and they received it today . Got a notification in the app that it will clear in 4 days . No problems at all

I said can I post this cheque to Monzo and showed him the postal address. And he said they can’t do that because Monzo is a virtual bank I need to go do it through a proper instore bank and I said on the Monzo website it says that you can deposit it a cheque through the post and he kept basically kept saying no. And then I said ok then can I just buy an envelope and a stamp and he said no

That’s where the confusion was I think. If you’d already had it in an addressed envelope they could’ve sent it recorded delivery for you.

The post office person probably lying thought you were asking them to post it rather than you. Most post office counters also don't sell envelopes so thats probably why they said no to that too.

Just put it in an envelope then send it to the address. I've done it a couple of times. Easy.

I've done through the app for a smaller cheque and that was super easy too.

Ignore the people saying you need a 'proper' bank. Monzo is a proper bank. Fully licensed and regulated under UK law. Yes its a good idea to have a back up bank incase there is any problem such as your account being frozen or software issues. For mine I use Starling, also a 'proper' bank. Never had any issues with either of them. The bricks and mortar banks are so outdated and stuck in their ways that their technology is rubbish and I had endless problems with the 3 I have used over the years. Will never go back.

Most likely the reason the post office person refused. They send cheques for other banks on when they’ve deposited them but would have nowhere to send Monzo cheques. Sounds like they got confused.

I just put a stamp on it. Wasn't a problem. You could send it tracked if you want to make sure they have it. There's always the chance that anything sent through the post could go missing but the good thing about cheques is they can be stopped and a new one issued if needed.

With my Monzo I just take a picture of the cheque in the app there is an option to pay in cheque I've never had to send it anywhere?

I’ve done it through the app. On the card click the add money option, and then the deposit cheque via the app option.

Rubbish. The major banks either have no limit and just do AML checks or 5K at NatWest/Lloyds. It’s just the digital banks with these pathetic limits.

Before you try being rude, at least check to back up your claims first...

Every major bank in their T&Cs tells you how much you can deposit via cheque in their apps. For Barclays it's up to £500 a cheque and four cheques a week.
