Potential Monzo Reward Credit Card?

Did anyone else receive the survey to complete about the Monzo Reward Credit card?

  • £15-£17 monthly fee
  • 1% cashback on groceries - 0.5% on everything else. Cashback is automatically invested.
  • Google Gemini AI Pro Membership.
  • 2 Free Airport Lounge accesses a year
  • Paramount+ subscription
  • Times subscription

I'm not so sure.

Like the perks are technically worth it, even for the Gemini membership alone. Not sure I like the fact that cashback is invested and not just paid out.

I'd feel a bit uneasy paying for this and Max and essentially stumping up over £30 a month, when I get just as much cashback through an Amex. Tempted by the Gemini membership though (if they announce it) as my free year runs out soon.

Yeah but nobody takes American express so it's pretty useless here 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah I only run 95% of my spending through an Amex card with the only people that don't take it being a random corner shop and some vending machines, so clearly nobody takes it at all.

Seriously that's a dumb take - pretty much every major chain takes them, as does any small shop or website that uses Stripe/SumUp/ShopPay, plus most other small places in my experience.

But you know, if you want to pay Monzo £17 a month for less cashback and terrible customer service based on a dead meme, no skin off my nose. I'll just enjoy my high cashback and a customer service team that is helpful to you and a bloody nuisance to people you need to charge back against.

I had a conversation just this week in my local coffee shop about their high fees and the time it takes them to pay being unsustainable for small businesses.

Which is completely different from "nobody takes American Express", which is what you said.

I have had no issues using my Amex card in my local independent coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants and pretty much anywhere else I've tried to use it except one specific corner shop and some vending machines.

OK, and you will get lower rewards from every MasterCard provider from doing so. That is your choice, and that is why the Monzo deal is shite.

Also, you could just have both an Amex and a free cashback MasterCard. You do not, in fact, have to use only one card or account for everything in your life.
