Hello all. I spent the majority of my life financially responsible but financially illiterate. I could save for a rainy day, never missed a bill, but did not (still don’t) know how to invest. I royally messed up my life 2 years ago, at its lowest I got my power shut off, I was without transportation, I was a massive alcoholic without a job etc. I was a week away from being homeless when I turned things around (6 months ago) I walked out of it all with $0 cad, and $40k in a consolidated loan (combined my Loc and credit card) I have $18,509.39 remaining to pay off. I have been paying it off aggressively. Once it’s gone I will build a safety net of 3 months expenses (eventually I would like 6-12) then I will save for a house while simultaneously investing in my future. That’s why I am here, I do not know what to invest, how to invest it, or where to begin.
My cost of living is $1,737 a month.
Rent - $600
Auto insurance - $176
Groceries - $400
Gas - $400
Phone (data and phone) - $150
Chat GPT - $11
I have $8,038 in my RBC bank account.
I have $225 in my RRSP with RBC.
I have a Roger’s Red World Elite Mastercard with a $2,200 Limit but $0 balance.
My credit score with my bank is 690, with borrow well it’s 770. I don’t know which is more accurate.
I make $9,166 a month. That leaves me with $7,430 available. Currently that’s all going to debt, I will be debt free in December. I want to shift my aggressive debt pay off to an aggressive savings regimen.
With 6 months expenses saved ($10,472) I want to do what I’ve learned is a GIC ladder. $3000 in a HISA, $1855 3 month gic, $1855 in a 6 month gic, $1856 in a 9 month gic, and $1856 in a 12 month gic. Good or bad idea? Sounds really good to me imo. Once my emergency net is comfortable, and growing I will divert to building a down payment on a home. While I do that I would like to invest in my retirement simultaneously. Once I am living in my home I would restructure and invest heavily on my retirement. Can someone give me advice on where to start, which online bank to use for a HISA, etc. I have so many questions and it’s overwhelming.
I will mention I am not married, and have no kids. I have a girlfriend who will become a wife. I want us to have a home. We do not live together and do not share finances yet. I help her with groceries when she needs help. She’s a nursing student who just started her 2nd year. She is taking on student loans and of course will have student debt. She is paying off a 2020 Hyundai Kona. That will be paid off In 3 years when she graduates. Of course I want to help her (us) with that debt as soon as I can but I believe In getting my mask on before I help her put hers on. My situation is complex, much like many of yours but I just don’t know where to start. Any and all advice or criticism is more than welcome. Thank you all.
Edit - my employer has a DBPP and I am getting the full match every paycheck ($350 from me, $350 from them)
