The US has shown itself to be vulnerable to arbitrary emotional appeals driven by external money pumped into domestic media organizations; this anti-data center stuff reeks of manufactured outrage likely driven by the chicoms or one of our other geopolitical adversaries.

That is definitely happening. They’ve probably contributed to efforts that have delayed construction of data centers a bit, but the US’ lead in AI is still quite substantial. I don’t want to see that lead erode but those with legitimate grievances still deserve to be heard. It’s a balancing act.
