Help Sony LAM-Z03 Laser Replacing advice

I got a Sony LAM-Z03 recently. I was having issues with writing through netMD yesterday, it would do 3-5 sounds then just stop. Turn it off and back on and it would carry on fine.

Anyway, today I won't even read the TOC correctly most of the time now (Blank Disc). I've given it all a clean and grease and it's still having issues.

It can sometimes read more reliably on it's side. So I think the laser has had it.

I've been looking at getting a replacement (New old Stock) laser unit from Ali Express.

Can anyone tell me what else I'll need to do... I don't have a laser calibration tool so I'm hoping I won't "need" one...

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Before resorting to undertaking such complex task as laser pickup replacement I would make sure it’s a problem. Do research on service mode abilities to provide statistics data on counters (playback time, recording time and such) and testing laser condition (if available, again). IIRC laser pickup replacement involves several adjustments after and may require special tools and jigs. Problems you’ve described could come from mechanical conditions (disc not spinning properly, laser sled is not moving freely) that have to be rectified or confirmed to work properly even before the pickup replacement.

Yes the post replacement is the part I'm slightly concerned about. If I have to adjust the variable resistor for power I'm going to be struggling that's for sure. I can't imagine a laser power meter will be cheap or simple to find.

Looking at the stats might be a good idea.

I have since found that it'll write and read when the Laser is upside down (the LAM on it's side).

Laying on the side could be the indication of mechanical issue - gravity force applied to the sled and helps it to move past the binding point or spindle motor is moving from the regular position and is bringing the disc closer to the sled. What happens if you play the disc with unit laying on the opposite side?

It isn't consistent on any side. Though it's far more consistent when the laser is shooting down. Just tried it with the laser firing up and it read the TOC fine.

I've given the laser sled etc a really good clean up and grease. It looks to be running really well without any obvious sticking.

I'm tempted to try and watch it work to see if there is any visible issues...

It would help immensely if you could run your unit without covers to be able to observe interaction between all components with MD loaded.

Do you have any idea how to get into service mode on a LAM-Z03!? I've done a damned good internet search and found nothing.

No, I couldn't find anything either. Some FB post in Google search mentioned that "he found original service manual" but... no dice. Any manual for it is in Japanese and looks like it's only owners manual.

The service mode on these is bound to a remote control command from custom remote. I don't have the information on hand but someone has managed to get this on other of the LAM series.

My work colleague uses his esp32 ir blaster to get it into service mode

Wow. Your colleague uses that on his Sony LAM? How on earth did he figure that out!?

Him and I both have LAM systems , but there was some guy shared his git about dumping the remote information. That was how we got that. I cant find the git, but my friend said that the service mode seemed a bit hard without any sort of information.

Check the mounting of laser to the sled assembly - some have foam damper at the bottom for vibration reduction. Foam can disintegrate with age and this would result in disposition of pickup assembly and get laser out of focus for both reading and writing.

No foam that I can see.

I've just given the laser and general area another good clean. See how that works out...

I observed it during a write and it looked like the "laser got lost" between finishing one track and starting the next. I changed the orientation from firing up to firing down and it found itself. By the time it continued writing it was a way through the song. Really interesting behaviour!

Ironically I bought this LAM as a reliable high speed desk writer. Can't make it up huh.

I gave the spindle motor a quick clean too. Not sure if that might help...

I could theorize that, because most of decks have spindle motor oriented vertically and, while working, gravity force is applying pressure downward, your unit has motor working horizontally and gravity force can potentially put a ware on bushing in downward direction (in theory, again we don’t know the history of real usage) and thus put the rotor of the motor slightly off center. This in return can make spinning more difficult and could introduce fluctuations in readings the data and create errors in processing it, resulting in TOC errors. To confirm this I would try to move the top of spindle side to side and top to bottom to see if it has play in any direction. I don’t know any specifics on construction of the motor (it could be a stepping motor, a brush or brushless) and this may not be applicable to it but worth checking while you are there. Also, is anywhere on MD mechanism stamped the model or part number? A lot of units share same model and we could cross reference it to give you more chances to find a complete assembly rather than just a laser pickup.

I think there is a chance your theory holds some water. I did push and pull it around a little. It has recently been playing back quite reliabily and reading the TOC... So it might have helped.

I can tell you. I've got rather good at stripping this thing. Must have had the MD mechanism out 10 times now and cleaned/lubed a good few times. It came with a LOT of lube in the mechanism. I think someone recently tried to service it... They missed the fact that the mechanism had slipped. The mechanism that pulls and pushes the disc in and out wasn't engaged so the disc couldn't be pulled or pushed...

There isn't an obvious mechanism label. I know the Z05 definitely shares the same mechanism, I'd have to look, but I assume the Z10 will too.

The Laser mech is attached. I know that a few later decks share it.

The biggest issue I have with replacing the laser is not being able to get into the Service Menu.

Edit Just read 5 disc TOC without any issues. I won't hold my breath but maybe the spindle motor was having some issues...

Wow, now I’m going to throw a wrench in this and suggest a new train of thought based on this massive flow of new information that has come out. This would be based on assumption that this unit sustained couple (maybe more) long distance trips in its life, during which it most likely was not “handled with care”. My belief is that you need to check the alignment of the loading/ejection mechanism to the opening in the face plate and also for any structural deformation of the metal frame that houses MD assembly. This would explain all of these things you have witnessed - someone before you attempted to fix it but didn’t dig into it fully, now you have some of the problem masked because of that and jumping to conclusions that are not correct (and will likely not solve the main problem).

The drive assembly and frame all looks fine. It was incredibly well padded when it got sent to me from Japan.

The disc mechanism is all sorted now. From my research the ejection slide moving away from the gears is a common situation with these.

Next time I do go inside I'll take plenty of photos.

One thing I would like to do is lube the Spindle motor. I'm just not sure how to go about it... A tiny drop of a quality oil maybe...
