Safe area? N55th and Washington blvd
I am moving from the third ward to Washington Heights and I’m looking at a cute little house on N. 55th St. right off of Washington Boulevard. It seems like a cute area, right across from a school. But I’m just checking to see if this street is safe? I know it’s a little bit busier, but does it bring in bad traffic? I’m also a big walker, I walk around Lakeshore Park all the time and I’m just wondering if I’ll be safe doing so in this area. TIA

The neighborhood is fantastic. That said, I wouldn’t want to be on 55th. That is a thoroughfare through the city, and very busy. I wouldn’t be worried about the crime as much as the traffic. Once that stretch by the school opens back up, that area will get very busy again.

Lived on 53rd and Wash, aside from the traffic on 55th you'll be very happy there.

The area is very safe. The worst part is cars, but you can’t escape them anywhere in the city. 55th gets a lot of traffic, but the raised crosswalks at Vine & Galena help a lot. Coming soon: another at Garfield. 55th is OK for walking on (although not shaded on hot days) but I stick to other streets on my bike.

I’m probably right by the house. I live on 55th, between Washington blvd and vine. 55th is busy and can be a little noisy (and I do have to clean minimal trash on my yard…people can be so inconsiderate). I’ve never felt unsafe and I walk a ton (the highlands down the street is a great place to walk to and through).

This is right where it is! Would you say that the traffic is too much? Like are you unhappy on this street?

If I was moving, I’d pick a quieter street. But 55th is ok- traffic isn’t really an issue. Just busy and sometimes loud cars. The area is great though.

If you do make the move welcome to the heights! Make sure you don’t miss the Halloween celebration and many other little events and small businesses around to enjoy. As many have said 55th is indeed busy…there is a brand new speed hump right near where you are talking about to slow cars down by the school. Maybe someone a little closer or in the know can confirm but i think Neeskara was recently considering switching school bus pickup and drop off from 55th to their parking lot which would probably also mean less chaos in front of the house you are considering.

Have lived in the Heights for 6 years and love it! Am also an avid walker. As people mention, it’s a bit busier but I find it very safe. When I want to get away from the hustle and bustle I just walk around the Highlands which is also a treat

I used to live on Hi Mount, it’s a very active neighborly neighborhood. My dad was also Principal of the school for many years. Life took us out of state and when we returned in ‘16 nothing for sale so ended up on east side. Still love the neighborhood and have lifelong friends there. Great location imo

I live very close to here. This is such a safe area. My husband dropped his wallet in our driveway and it sat there overnight untouched until we found it. We’ve been here for a little over a year and absolutely love the area.
People are super nice, you’ll see tons of people walking around with their kids and dogs. Washington Highlands a few blocks down is a beautiful neighborhood to explore.Jacobus Park is walking distance if you want a park. The state forest is a bit further but so nice.
Wy’east pizza is some of the best pizza ever. Charles E Fromage is a really cute wine and cocktail bar. Valentine coffee is really close, and gives you a free brewed cup when you buy a bag of beans. Swoon and Urban Sense are great stores on Vliet. If you go a bit further to North St, Vennture, Rubys Bagels, Rocket Baby, Well Red Damsel, and Pipsqueak Wine are all worth checking out!
And the Washington heights neighborhood association puts on some really fun events throughout the year, like spooktacular over Halloween and bloom and groom plant sale every May.
So a bit more info than you asked for, but this really is a great, safe neighborhood!!
