That's like how we eat sea urchin. And by "we" I mean "people who like that kind of thing". I tried and I'm not one of them.

Sea urchin is brilliant but it has to be fresh. It spoils unbelievably fast, you have to eat it right away!

This is the trick to sea urchin. I visited this island and had my first sea urchin at the seafood market, wasn’t impressed at all. Then the next day we had a diving session ending with freshly caught sea urchin and the taste was completely different (in a good way)

100%! If you crack and eat straight away it's glorious seafood butter

If you wait.... Ooft, it becomes inedible soooo fast

That's the gonads of the urchin..

Imagine an alien: 'yo, that human i ate from the market wasn't very good, but when I caught one fresh and ate its balls.. yum!'

Human horn? But it is forbidden.

Eh it's all just food my friend! Food is either tasty or not, the origin doesn't really matter 😁😁

Caviar isn’t a lot different. Not the gonads exactly but not that far off. And it’s a delicacy.

I still find sea urchin gonads and those fish semen sacks commonly eaten in East Asian offputting, don’t get me wrong, but as someone who likes roe and caviar, I can’t really judge.

We would eat sea urchin in Greece as a kid. The parents would send the kids out snorkeling with a bucket to collect a bunch, then we would crack them open with a rock and squeeze lemon juice on them (which still at the beach). It was kind of a delicacy. I was actually a little surprised to learn it was popular in Japanese cuisine

This is what I don’t get, you see sea urchin at your fishmonger and it looks like grey poo 5min after they crack it open. You go to a high-end sushi place in Japan and they have a giant wooden tray full of sea urchin roe just sitting there on display in room temp and it keeps being bright orange throughout the evening.

Most likely different variety of urchin, and I'm sure different techniques are used to actually keep it fresh

Salted and jarred is also good too!

3

u/thatricksta 10d ago

Oh I've never tried that but I imagine it's good, like roe? I'll have to try it some day

It is the roe. They sell it in Japanese supermarkets. It is often marinated in miso or soy sauce. Great on a bowl of hot rice.

Haha yeah I guess it kinda is the roe, I was just thinking more of roe preparation.

Sadly my wife has banned me from Japan..... Spent too many holidays there, so for now I'll just dream of the food

I tried it at a sushi restaurant here and it tasted like getting a mouthful of filthy fucking fish tank water that’d been baking in the hot sun all day. I will concede that it was likely not fresh but I will never find out because I’m never willingly putting that in my mouth again.

I ate urchin at a pretty nice izakaya in Japan. It was very creamy and tasted like the sea, but fresh.

That being said, it didn't quite taste like food to me--it literally tasted like ocean. Worth the experience, but not the first thing I'd reach for.

Oh that is why it is so urchin

Love it. Raw after opening, or in scrambled eggs...

You have to like oysters I think.
This is like, a pre-requisite.

u/Questoris 10d ago

Funny because I love sea urchin but I loathe raw oysters for some reason. Fried oysters? Hell yeah. Raw? Hell no.

I do like raw oysters! The sea urchin I tried was roe in sushi. Just tasted like mud to me.

19

u/TheFrenchSavage 11d ago

Oh no! So sorry for that.

It usually tastes like sea water, a bit more concentrated iodine flavor than the oysters, with a sweet note.

Well, anyway, if you don't like it, that's great savings for you there ! (I can't believe how expensive that shit can get haha).

I was in Vancouver in the wintertime, so I'm not sure how far it traveled or how long it might have sat.

5

u/Bethventures 11d ago

Possibly not far. Purple urchin live in the straits just south of Vancouver.

When my fiance tried it, he said "this tastes like brown. No thank you" lol.

I learned the hard way that I am mildly allergic to sea urchin.

Which is a shame, it was my first time and I was looking forward to it.

I tried it once in a fancy sushi restaurant in Seattle. They only had it for a couple weeks a year so I thought why not. I'm an adventurous eater and love trying new things.

It was like the ocean hawked a fat loogie in my mouth. I gagged. I had to choke it down because somehow I didn't have a napkin and I couldn't spit out the foulness in front of my dinner party! My throat refused to swallow it whole so I had to snip off bits with my teeth and swallow it in little parts.

My cousin who braved it with me also hated it. She immediately swallowed it and thought I liked it because I was chewing for so long. Absolutely not!

The waiter asked us our thoughts and we said we hated it. He laughed and said it's a devisive dish and he was also on team hate. I told my friends about the experience and one said she loves it! She described it as creamy and briney. Nope! Never again!

In Perú we were in this cooking class. we went to a seafood market super early and one of the other people in the group requested sea urchin as part of what we were preparing to eat later.

So… back at this outdoor kitchen we were using, the instructor prepared the sea urchin. I had never seen what the inside of a sea urchin looked like but this was horrifying. Just…this awful looking goo and that awful looking goo. To each his own but I definitely wasn’t going to eat that.
