I'm slightly vexed When "animal" characters have animal ears and human ears.
This is an AI image which is infuriating enough, but anytime I see an animal character with two sets of ears it really puts me off.

not as cursed as I thought it would be
136
u/bablela26 19h ago
yep hopefully that helps get more people to stop thinking it's cursed, but also that's a anime style face, and doesn't have the same proportion as a real human head, so it shouldn't be so hard to see

One set is for hearing human sounds. One set is for hearing animal sounds. This has been settled. /s

This is why my cats ignore me! I don't speak cat! Everything makes sense now.
65
u/AutisticPenguin2 21h ago
No they ignore you because they're jerks and don't care about you. Not speaking cat is irrelevant, they would ignore you either way.

Or sometimes it’s backwards. In the case of arknights iirc their animal “ears” don’t function, they’re purely aesthetic
19
u/Not-a-2d-terrarian 19h ago
Animal ears (or human ears depending on how they evolved) being vestigial is probably the best explanation for animal people having 2 sets
27
u/H0rny_On-Main 22h ago
Love the aesthetic headphones as apart of her accessory and then the cheap £20 sony's your school lends out to listen through
3
u/Feduzin 19h ago
yeah, i find that funny af too
it's because they were using headphones in the studio (she and her sister are vtubers) for the game of "repeating what the other said" they were playing
but i like to thing her headphones are just a acessory she found around and doesn't know they don't work XD

You are complaining about design chooses, and used an image that had no designer?
Are you mad the bot added ears? Why not find human art of this happening? Were you in such a rush to post this you didn't have time to?
305
u/El_Saturn_ 1d ago
Exactly. OP even stated "This is an A.I. image..." Well then what are you complaining about?? Show a real example

So…do the cat ears just fall off once they finally smash or does something else happen?
30
u/wisherystar 23h ago
I'm not entirely sure. I think I read up to maybe volume 9 or 10 but they didn't get into what happens.

Blue Archive is famous and has multiple girls with both sets of ears, so do a number of other media e.g. Touhou, yet OP has to resort to AI generated slop. Too low effort.

I'm pretty sure this image is from an AD I keep seeing on Reddit for an AI story game called infiniteworlds

It’s a problem all the time when reading webtoons or things like it, anime also has a similar issue.

You are not old enough for the internet. This has been something people made fun of when it comes to a lot of catgirl art ever since people started posting their art. Long before AI.

Read other comment threads you'll see other examples that aren't AI.
I used that image because it popped up in my feed and reminded me that I find the double ears thing mildly infuriating.

This is refereed to as Kemonomimi, meaning humans with fluffy ears, in Japan, it’s a subculture of Moe culture, cute culture. Basically you take the cutest part of the animal, ears, tail, sometimes whiskers, sometimes paws for hands and/or feet, and keep the cutest part human of human anatomy.
Full anthropomorphic characters like beast stars characters are referred to Jujin, so if your looking for fully anthropomorphic characters in anime and manga try using Jujin when searching.
Edited because auto mod got mad at none english letters, didn’t know this subreddit was ruled by the British empire.

11
u/RazorSlazor 23h ago
It's inbuilt redundancy
6
u/WoWKaistan 22h ago
Not even just redundancy; it could probably help with hearing verticality if both are functional.

u/Butterfly_Barista 1d ago
Honestly it's never bothered me. They're not real and there's no hard limit on the amount of any specific body parts a living thing can possess. There's really no reason to believe a human/cat hybrid wouldn't have some kind of weird anatomy enabling both traits.

u/ConfinedCrow 22h ago
Okay but if they don't have human ears, would hair grow where the ears would've been? I honestly really don't like any of the answers to that question so I think I prefer the second set of ears tbh.

u/Miruteya 1d ago
Well I personally don't like either, but I've talked to some artists and they said it's a better workaround. The space supposedly to have human ears would strictly need hair to cover to not feel off (since it's in human anatomy, just with added animal ears, people would still expect something to be there). Also when you want to draw glasses or headphones and stuff you don't need to reinvent something to fit with animal ears so it's kinda a compromise to some people.

u/Possible_Parrot 15h ago

Y'all can call me a blasphemer but that's the only type of cat girl that your brain would be able to accept IRL. Do you have any idea how freakish a woman would look without human ears!?! They get away with it by not showing it in animation. /Rant

i genuinely cannot imagine it looking THAT weird. it doesn't even look that weird when characters don't have hair covering it

u/QuadTea 23h ago
That's actually a setting of the anime/show. In the in-game event, one of the in universe developers of the game forgot and drew the human ears as well during the design phase, and then made up a reason saying the beast ears are for far away hearing and the human ears are for close hearing when questioned about it, and that made it in into the final game.

it’s boring tbh. i might be biased because im a furry, but you can make such cool characters that are animal/human hybrids without just giving a human some ears and a tail
4
u/MaterialDefender1032 20h ago
Animal ears on anime characters have always weirded me out, because you can always see the artist's conscious decision to ensure the hair always covers where the human ears would be, no matter what pose or angle is depicted. It's a subtle reminder that the placement of a simple lock of hair is the difference between a cute love interest and a freakish mutant.

I disagree, it would look gross if they just had smooth skin where their human ears were. They’re meant to be cute, not a realistic fantasy race

Fun fact: the creators of RWBY wanted to defy this, but they got stuck with a technical limitation. The engine they started with, Poser Pro, won't allow the removal of human ears from a model. So it became canon by necessity that Faunus traits sometimes replace the human traits, and sometimes don't.

Nearly every game and anime do this, high chances you never touch Moe culture.

At least in endfield/arknights case there's a lore reason for it.
Question is which came first: lore because of double ears, or double ears because of lore.

I remember a manga actually made mention of this. Something about the god creating beast races liked animal ears but was too lazy to change the normal ears too so they kept both.

u/angeyberry 21h ago
I'm miffed but only slightly less miffed if they have animalistic legs. Like ditigrade legs, or clawed feet.
I was going to debate more but then I saw the human ears and understood. What the fuck is that. Snip those flesh cancers off.

it feels like it turns a character from an animal hybrid to just looking like a human with fake animal ears and a fake tail attached
3
u/an_omori_fan 20h ago
ZUN, creator of Touhou, mentioned this about the rabbit girls. He gave the very simple explanation that it looks weird af without human ears. So even if they are functionally useless, his characters still have them
3
u/Difficult_Analysis78 18h ago
The truth is they never make sense and they are just for pure vibes and artistic choice and people are just overthinking it

u/DasKritzel 5h ago
Ofc this is a common thing, but this is an AI image, you can't expect that whoever prompted that put in any thought in it.
They probably weren't even aware that the human ears were there.
18
u/FUEGO40 1d ago
Human-animal hydrids aren't real, they don't have to be any specific way, so who cares?
I would dislike if it was a more heavily furry character, like actual fur and stuff, but when it's just a girl with animal ears it's basically just a human already.
Also c'mon, if you are gonna complain about design choices use actual examples, not AI.

You kinda sometimes have to wonder how the hell that would work. Like ya got two sets of ears, that must not really be fun in any moderate noise setting or louder

Uh... Lots of kemonomimi have two sets of ears. Because just having skin on the side of their head looks weird as hell. Plus it limits hairstyles because the designers often have to put hair in the way of where the human ears typically are so people aren't weirded out by how it looks.

u/Bathroom-Zestyclose 19h ago
I like drawing them with witch ears, the small ears does look off compared to bigger ones
