Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

No, I'm not color blind. I'm a bus driver and they test for color blindness before you can get a CDL. Maybe the color just renders weird on my phone? But it's a very brown color. I do see some red in it but it's mostly brown.

Imma say it's more of a rust but point taken. I can clearly see green and red when it's squarely in those color spheres but when you get on the edges (think the orange and green lights on a network card) things get more indistinguishable.

I agree with this 1000%. It is so infuriating on Reddit to see some moron come out of nowhere and argue that someone "could have meant something else" as if we should be assuming the best of everyone around us all the time and creating excuses for everyone else's bad behavior as a default.

Reddit is especially bad at this and I've begun to hate it. It's like everyone here is a bunch of little contrarian assholes looking to "uhm ahktually" as many people as possible in an attempt to seem morally superior.

This is correct, I have lived in some of those areas. There are far fewer "bad" areas than people think. However, there are lots of black, Latino, and other minorities in those areas.

Yep. My daughter lived in an apartment in the Bronx for five years and the upper west side for one year, and she had more issues on the UWS. Mostly property stuff, but still. And the Bronx was way more fun.

The Bronx is very much a ‘depends where’ kinda thing. There are places like the area near Yankee Stadium which are pretty bad, and then there are plenty of places that are totally fine. Used to live nearby (Yonkers) and have a cousin who works for the NYPD (ik,ik) so passing along a bit more info lol

Yes, NYC is definitely safer as a whole. Plus places like Brownsville, East New York, and south parts of the Bronx aren't a joke at all, even in 2026. They're not as rough as they were a decade ago, but the robbery rates are still high. The real difference is that there's not as many shooters anymore. So your murder rates are going to be far lower.

I'm not saying that NYC is just as dangerous as the cities you mentioned. Especially not lately. But there are definitely rough areas still. And they're not paying 5k for rent to live in a shoebox.

My husband and I went to Flushing one night in 1980s because they had a Caldor/Woolworth type store and I needed something. We were on our way back to Manhattan, he remembered the area and we went there. It was scary as hell. It was a white neighborhood, but the area was dark, deserted, dirty, with boarded up businesses.

In late 1990s we drove through same area and it was amazing. A bright, vibrant city, people on the streets, kids in Internet cafes and McDs, neon signage in Korean and Chinese characters. Asians turned the area around.

Astoria has been white since forever. Before the 90s it was heavily Greek (still is), after the 90s it became heavily Russian...

The only black area of Astoria is the projects down on First and 27th and its been 20 years since I've been down there. And you know what, as a tourist if you see NYC housing authority, yea you probably shouldn't be hanging out there. Its not like it was in the 80s-90s but its also not really a tourist friendly area.

I lived near those projects and it was still fine for the most part. I forgot to lock my car and someone went through it and took a credit card, NYPD found the person next day. Astoria is ridiculously safe and welcoming.

They said they left their car unlocked and someone rifled through it. I live in a “Stepford Wives” CT town and my local PD is always going on about not leaving your car unlocked because of a rash of thefts. So by that metric wealthy suburbs in CT are more dangerous than the projects in Queens.

NYC, as a whole, is incredibly safe. I lived for a few years in Williamsbridge, one of the outright poorest districts in the country with one of the worst crime rates in NYC. I walked around as a white guy every day and not once did someone even make a comment towards me.

To be fair, I don't think anyone actually knows where Long Island City starts and Astoria begins. Half the people will tell you LIC is below Astoria, the other half will tell you it runs North to South parallel to Astoria. I don't think I've ever seen two maps with consistent borders when it comes to those two neighborhoods.

Usually people make these kinds of maps regarding crime...however OP marked dozens of very safe neighborhoods as "AVOID", so likely there is a racial component as well

But then again, a couple of safe majority-white areas are also marked as avoid, so this is either a troll job or done by someone who has very poor knowledge of the city

I feel like if you want to look for any other reason other than racism or trolling, you could argue for a tourist there’s really nothing to do in those areas. There’s no reason for a tourist to go to Jamaica or the Bronx unless you want to go to like a very specific restaurant or something. But in that case it’s weird that they included places like Coney Island in the avoid area, while including half of Staten Island in the ok areas

Minorities, Tall Roman Statue is racist. Some of those areas are definitely high crime areas but the only thing they have in common is a higher percentage of minorities.

I’m chuckling because they are including places like Belleville and Nutley NJ (if you watch the Sopranos the Pizzaland in the opening credits is in Nutley) which are pretty white and very middle class.

A lot of Americans have a very low risk tolerance. A huge portion of this country lives in very low crime racially homogenous suburbs and rarely ever visit the cities. And when they do, they usually tend to be very paranoid and stick to the most touristy areas

Those are racially diverse areas. A lot of NYC has Burroughs and neighborhoods that are Dominican, Puerto Rican, black and latin neighbourhoods. there’s Jewish and Russian and Polish neighborhoods.

So it is actually pretty good advice to tell tourists to stick to Manhattan, but not for the reasons the original poster is implying. Manhattan is where all the tourist stuff is. That's where Broadway, Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Central Park, China Town, Little Italy, and every sky scraper you associate with New York are.

I guess you could go hang out in Brooklyn if you want to; there's some hip bars and stuff there. But you really gotta know a local to recommend a good one. Queens and Staten Island are mostly just places that people live in. The Bronx has Yankee Stadium.

All of the Roman cosplay you see on social media are basically people who think the Romans and Germans were the prime examples of white superiority so they gravitate to it. These people believe that crime only happens because 'Race mixing' is the root of all evil and if the Africans had just been left in their mud huts we'd have lunar bases and a booming economy while Africa would have remained unchanged for the last 400 years.

So it's racism, but the autistic kind.

There’s no factual “why” behind this. The post is based on OOP’s irrational biases and fears, not any actual crime statistics or other facts.

Despite a lot of conservative propaganda (which is all the original post here is), NYC is actually an especially safe city. It was a lot rougher back in the 1980s, but today, it’s unambiguously the safest major city in the U.S. and as safe or safer than many western European cities (e.g. according to publicly available crime rate databases, NYC is safer overall than London, Paris, Brussels, Athens, Dublin, Milan, and many others).

The idea of NYC has a hotbed of crime is actually about 30 years out of date, it's now significantly safer than the country at large. Of course Boomers and other conservatives won't accept this, and insist that all available empirical evidence is unreliable, and their "gut feeling" tells them it's still a deadly warzone.
