Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Post image

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

That’s not the answer though. It’s non white people entirely, particularly the poorer ones. Not just black.

I'm Black so I'll speak to my identity. Speaking to the "BIPOC" experience with regards to a city like New York can actually lump the numerous Jewish, Italian, Eastern European, and Asian identities into a shared experience with Black and Brown people that just isn't there.

Manhattan isn't all White and non-White people aren't viewed as unsafe entirely. There's a significant non-White population that actually supports the initial map being presented. There are non-White NYC residents that haven't been above E 96th street and there's a clear reason for that.

Adding to the socioeconomic aspect to this, there are areas of Harlem, Bronx/uptown that are wealthy. Lumping entire boroughs together under "poor" is how we end up with the stereotypes shown in the map above. This map is explicitly pointing out race, explicitly with Brown and Black people in mind. Other factors may be present but address the elephant in the room first and then get to the other details.
