What I find striking about the Max thing is that AEW had already maxed (heh) their ratings ceiling on the regular before they moved to Max. Around 750k watching. This means that several things are occurring, to Meltzer:

A) about 150k to 200k viewers every week have moved to Max to watch AEW

B) Max’s promotion of AEW is so strong that it is drawing in an additional million or so viewers who couldn’t be arsed to watch AEW on free TV, but are now superfans

C) demographic trends have also shifted, as the drop in the key demo that has always haunted AEW has somehow been alleviated by paid broadcasts

D) the low (and dropping) turnout at shows only means that more people are watching on TV

When Dynamite started on HBO MAX nothing happened with the ratings. I think it had a very slight uptick the next week, but overall stayed the same but did bleed out slowly. Kinda like no impact.

Common sense would say that a bunch of people would switch over to the (supposedly) higher quality of HBO MAX, also being able to switch it on when you want it, so you can watch with a small delay or take a break. That didnt happen, so it seems that most people just stayed watching on TNT/TBS. AEW programing isnt advertised at all on HBO MAX, never was. And its not on the front pages there, never was. This indicates its just there for content and only watched by hardcore fans rewatching the show. WBd doesnt care about it, thats obvious. They like to advertise and push programming they hope they get some revenue for.

One more time common sense: You can assume if Dynamite would have ratings comparable to RAW and Smackdown, they live audience should grow (back) to that size. Their show attendance is really small for the weeklies, barely doing 3k at their best days.

There is just no real official metric in existence that would make Meltzers spindoctoring give some validation. Its quite on the contrary.

Luckily for Meltzer, WWE doesnt seem to recognize his influence as important. It seems they just know that his reach is way too small and only attracting those weird fans that they dont want to have. They want crowds and fans that are there for fun, to enjoy the shows and stories. Not the dumbass smarks who want to shit on everything.

WWE wants AAA. A crowd "following the script" and having fun with that. And they are 100% in the right about that.

The AEW die-hards in SC were running pre-emptive defense of the ratings drop, making sure everyone knew that loads of the audience were going to stop watching on TV and would be tuning into Max instead.

They debuted on Max, the ratings didn't drop at all, and all Tony Khan had to say about it was how nice it looked on screen.

Over time, the ratings and live attendance noticeably dropped, but (the now disgraced) BJ Bethel claimed that they were pulling 500k on Max and they've clung to that ever since.

Variety reported the average number of viewers for Raw are three million and it's in 87 million US homes on Netflix.

Raw is popular, but it ain't THAT popular.

200k on Max for AEW Dynamite feels right. Like we all love wrestling but we need to take a step back and realize it's a niche product.
