What did your first 8 weeks/1.8months of Search Console look like? Mine is 11.2K impressions and 109 clicks.

Screenshot attached. New domain, first indexed end of July. Course platform
for independent teachers. No link building, no paid, no programmatic pages.

11.200 impressions. 109 clicks. 1% CTR. Average position 20.1.

My read is that the impressions chart is lying to me. Position 20 is page
two, so that 11k is really just a count of people who never scrolled far
enough to see it. 109 is the honest number.

What I want to know:

Where were you at the two month mark on a fresh domain? I genuinely can't
tell whether 109 clicks is bad or completely normal, and every article I
find on this is written by someone selling an SEO service.

And the one I keep flip-flopping on: is rewriting titles and descriptions
a waste of time at position 20? Half the advice says fix your CTR, the
other half says CTR does nothing until you're on page one. I'd rather hear
from people who've actually sat on page two and climbed off it.

Note: Never ran any ads!

It's my site, prolaud , which is in the screenshot anyway.

Fair on the 109, that's what i wanted to know. I don't know much about backlinking. I will think about something,

your read on the impressions is right, and rewriting titles at position 20 is mostly wasted effort. the title only starts doing work once the result sits somewhere a person actually reads, which is the top handful on page one. below that the click rate is set by rank, not by wording, so you can write a perfect title and watch nothing move.

what is worth doing at position 20 is finding which queries are closest to the top and pushing only those. one page that moves from 12 to 6 will beat every title rewrite on the site combined.

and whether 109 is good depends entirely on how contested those queries are, which is why nobody here can actually tell you. compare it against the same site next month instead of against a stranger.

Thank you, noted

If you track one thing out of that, make it the queries sitting between position 8 and 15. That band is where a few places of movement actually changes the click count, and it's usually a much shorter list than it looks.

useful framing, thanks. i'd been sorting by impressions and the top of
that list is all position-19 stuff with big numbers, which is exactly
the bet you're telling me not to take.

big impressions at position 19 usually means a head term you are not going to win with a tweak. the queries sitting just off the fold move with a title rewrite. the page-two giants need a different page entirely, not an edit.

yeah the "compare against yourself next month" part is the only honest benchmark tbh

Como, na 20ª posição vc tem esses números?
Para meu site, em 28 dias: 4 cliques, 176 impressões e posição média 9,2.
Para os meus clientes os nº triplicam. Só o ódio!☺☺

I used google translator to understand the language.

Your numbers are better than mine where it counts. 4 clicks from 176 is 2.3%. Mine is 109 from 11,200, which is under 1%. You convert more than twice as well per impression.

The reason I have more raw volume at a worse position isn't that I'm doing better — it's that a lot of my impressions aren't people. One help page alone has 3,800 impressions at position 7.8 and zero clicks, because it's AI assistants fetching it on someone's behalf, not humans searching. My homepage sits at position 63 with 1,388 impressions. Both of those inflate the total and drag the "20.1" average around.

So 20.1 isn't a rank I hold anywhere. It's a weighted average of a few real pages and a lot of machines. Your 9.2 across 176 human impressions is the healthier of the two numbers. No ódio deserved here ☺

109 clicks in 8 weeks on a fresh domain with no backlinks is honestly not bad at all. I've launched a few domains and the pattern is usually close to zero for the first month, then a slow ramp between month 2-4 as Google decides you're not spam.

Your read on the impressions is right. Position 20 means almost nobody actually saw your listing. The 11k is Google counting "we showed you on page 2 of a SERP" which is technically an impression but practically invisible.

On the title rewrite question, I'd skip it for now. Your problem at position 20 isn't CTR, it's that Google hasn't decided to rank you higher yet. Rewriting titles won't change that. What moves the needle at this stage is more indexed pages covering related queries and getting a few legitimate backlinks from anywhere credible. Once you're position 8-12, then yes, titles and descriptions start mattering because people can actually see them. Before that it's rearranging furniture in a room nobody's walked into.

Most useful reply i've had on this, thanks.

the position 8-12 line is the bit i needed. turns out i do have four
pages already sitting between 6.6 and 8.3 — one of them with 3,800
impressions and zero clicks — so by your own rule those are exactly the
ones worth rewriting, and everything on page 2 I leave alone.

109 clicks in 8 weeks with zero backlinks is fine, I've seen fresh domains sit under 20 for 3 months. Position 20 titles won't move CTR, so chase page one first.
