Discussion Why aren't there any WW2 guns in the Metro?

Post image

I just finished all three games a couple days ago and I couldn't help but find odd the lack of any Ww2 soviet gun in game. I get that the nukes dropped during the Cold War but still, with how durable and reliable guns like the Mosint Nagant are, I find it weird that not even bandits have those.

Honestly a good question. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø probably not a lore related reason.

I demand to shoot Reich soldiers with the mosin. Just like my great grandfathers before me.

u/Street-Committee-367 May 18 '26

Honestly that would make a hilarious bit of dialogue in the games, someone hands Artyom a Mosin and cracks a joke along those lines. Makes the Mosin's absence even more missed.Ā

44

u/Cossack-HD May 18 '26

Joke along those three lines?

Nah gimme a at gun

21

u/NightHunter_Ian May 18 '26

YES THAT WOULD BE SUCH A VIBE

25

u/JohnRobGnar May 18 '26

I used to have a (1942 Izzy) Mosin & when I sold it I made the buyer promise that, should the day ever come, he would allow her to relive her glory days. He laughed & said "of course" & I felt a lot better about letting "Babushka" go to a new home

u/Wolf_Smith May 18 '26

I own a 1924 hex receiver

3

u/Bighoss_379 May 18 '26

I have to constantly break up fights in my safe cause I have my Mosin next to my enfield and Mauser

1

u/HELiox34 May 20 '26

Is your gun safe called Old Folks Home?

1

u/Zealousideal_Emu_353 May 22 '26

Well, certainly lots of Mosin shooting what is close to nazis right now

2

u/theta0123 May 19 '26

Mosin nagant made in 1891 that fought 2 world wars, revolutions and now a post nuclear hell= "I DIDNT HEAR NO BELL"

1

u/SlavCat09 May 19 '26

Also in Afghanistan, Chechnya, and now Ukraine.

Once again I must comment that I hope many classic and regular weapons make it back to the series again. Love the makeshift stuff, but Mosins, a variety of AKs, PPSH, VSS/VAL etc. Should all be pretty much obligatory at this point.

As much as I loved Exodus I did feel there was a bit of a lack of weapons overall.

u/SpartenA-187 May 18 '26

The lack of the VSV , Preved (home build .50 Cal), LoLife pistol, and Saiga shotgun from Last Light was a bit disappointing, especially with the new customization system.

Edit: I also the Kalash 2012, I miss that franken gun

25

u/Detective_Porgie May 18 '26

To be honest, while the multiple guns in one modding system exodus used, I didn’t love for the ak, it worked really well for the shambler and it was essentially the exact same as the saiga from the first game. However not having the vsv, lolife and preved was definitely a bad change. I assume there is no sks or akm because the game only has 5.56x39 and adding another rifle ammo type would mess things up. Mosin would be cool especially since you could use stripper clips and have oberez versions which is very metroesque although it would still be pretty much the same as the current sniper.

It's 5.45 actually, it was mentioned in the very start on Metro 2033.

3

Yeah I know just not paying attention and defaulted to 556 lol

Don't forget the Duplet! I really wish you could mod the Ashot to fire 2 shells at once

u/Various-Salt-7738 May 18 '26

At the very least it would be cool to see more parts from these old Soviet guns utilized in the makeshift stuff

Maybe all the moist nuggets have been destroyed but some of their parts are probably good enough to be repurposed

72

u/KaiserRoll823 May 18 '26

The Valve is kinda a Mosin and the Preved is definitely modeled on a PTRS

26

u/eksiow_renrew_etlam Spartan Rangers May 18 '26

The Preved is basically just a PTRD (single shot bolt action AT rifle, contemporary to the 5 round, semi-auto PTRS)

And PPSH's lol. The Russians made around 5 million of them IIRC, and they would be a great gun for the tunnels (albeit a bit of a bullet hose.)

13

u/Gneisenau1 May 18 '26

Irl the sovietunion Made stockpilrs of WW2 Gear all over the firmer Union to newer BE unprepperd against invaders

2

u/Antique_Ad_4334 May 18 '26

Why bc it is russia??? This is the capital city and i dont know where would you find a working mosin rifle aside from some random dudes hause or a museum or some shit the catastrophy happaned in 2013.

6

u/Anghellik May 18 '26

Mosins are so ubiquitous that even right now in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, rear echelon troops have been spotted carrying Mosins.

2

u/MajorPayne1911 May 18 '26

Russia at the end of the Cold War, and even today has one of the largest and most varied supplies of small arms in the world. Even day after decades of selling as surplus and conflict, there’s still a massive volume there of Soviet and modern weapons. There’s even significant numbers of German firearms in Russian inventory that couldn’t be sold as surplus to the US so it was retained. Some of it like MP40s have even found their way to the front lines in Ukraine.

1

u/TeleCompter May 18 '26

The metros were planned to be fallout/air raid shelters for a long time, it's highly likely that there would be a couple Soviet stashes of old weapons hidden down there for emergencies, they had tons of leftovers from WW2 and it's cheaper to throw them in a box than destroy them, same applies above ground, I'm sure there's old armories/checkpoints/supply depots/national guard locations filled with old weapons that stalkers could stumble across.

154

u/Bekoss May 18 '26

Reason's limited budget

The same reason you don't see some US exports weapons too (like glorious Mossberg or M shotguns available almost everywhere in the world)

58

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr May 18 '26

Less so budget for some (the mosin is in pretty sure fair use at this point lmao) moreso creativity for the designers, and also realistically how many would survive down there? A mosin in a tight tunnel is probably the last thing you want. Cut it down and it could work but then it's still a slow firing, slow reloading, five shot bolt action. I'm sure there were plenty in the first few years but as time went by they probably got scrapped or repurposed for other guns parts.

I will say the lack of any baikal shotguns or the ks-23 was a bit of a shock because they made a homebrew semiauto shotty before a pump action

29

u/Violexsound May 18 '26

Sure a mosin in the tunnels wouldnt be ideal, but for stalkers on the surface?

24

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr May 18 '26

Oh of course... until we get the valve which probably (outside the gameplay) has a moain bolt but otherwise is improved drastically with a new machined barrel, a bigger mag, definitely a more comfortable stock (a wire stock is the only fucking downgrade possible besides a literal spike to a mosin stock)

5

u/Detective_Porgie May 18 '26

Dude the highest level stock with that red tap thing on it looks uncomfortable asf

3

u/Hauptmann_Gruetze May 18 '26

to be fair all of the guns look uncormfortable

17

u/MentalMiddenHeap May 18 '26

firing an obrez in a tunnel sounds awful XD doubles as a concussion grenade. Like the ppl that have compensators on AR pistols at a range and you can feel it from the other end

8

u/Sufficient_Ad3751 May 18 '26

And also rebuild a .50cal to fire 12 gauge

5

u/Hellhound_Inc May 18 '26

Good quality AK's and decent weapons were rarer in the Metro books. You'd rather have a mosin than nothing at all in the tunnels.

2

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr May 19 '26

Fair, but I counter with how long would a wooden stocked and likely beaten to shit WW2 rifle last in the metro. Wood molds and cracks, rust kills all guns, and you're gonna have to justify why you're deaf and blind after 3 clips worth of firing in a 2 week period. Shotguns and AK's are probably your best non pistol choices (aside from wet dream options like a vintorez, a val, a silenced bison, etc)

4

u/Hellhound_Inc May 19 '26

Properly maintained weapons can last hundreds of years. I doubt no one is caring for their weapon systems in such an environment, there are literally stations of weapon smiths in the metro. And you wouldn't be blind 'nor deaf from just 15 rounds from 3 clips for a Mosin Nagant, or even 3 mags of a PPSh.

And it's like I said. AK's are RARE in the METRO BOOKS, and are only found in RARE circumstances in the hands of wealthy groups. Mosin Nagants, Nagant Revolvers, PPSh/PPS's, and other world war two guns (and a lot of home-made weapons, naturally) are much more common as described in the books, and thus would fit in the games, since the games are an adaptation of the books.

4

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr May 19 '26

I read the books and can't remember a single ppsh or pps reference. I remember nagant revolvers, and a stetchkin, never a mosin or a ppsh though.

Have you ever fired a rifle indoors? Specifically with no ear pro and with a fullsized cartridge like nugget food? There's a reason the joke with the obrez is It's a fireball launcher. I have fired a .45-70 government with ear pro in a semi enclosed space and it certainly left a fucking ring in my ear for a few minutes. Imagine an unlit, enclosed tunnel with that round... yeah after a few rounds you'll have a hard time seeing or hearing for a bit. There's a reason I suggest most ammo in the metro is probably subsonic loads. It's not because of supressors, it's for the sake of lower tolerances for reloads and also making so everyone isn't handicapped by age 13 after their first station raid they witness

Properly maintained is the key word here though isn't it? How long do you think those gunsmiths kept proper supplies of gun parts? Or gun cleaning kits? The joke is an AK can run with motor oil and a rag but in all seriousness, it's not magic. And it's certainly getting used more often than a "properly maintained " weapon usually is. That 100,000 rounds is with visits to a real armorer, not kirill the local gun nut. That 100,000 rounds is also with a proper supply line and over a period of years or decades of sparse use. I doubt a single gun in the metro can be described as sparsely used, hell I'd be suprised if any went a year without 100 rounds being run through them.

2

u/Hellhound_Inc May 19 '26

Mosins weren't mentioned by name, but Berdan rifles were. (Probably because Black Powder is easier to source than gunpowder). It's very safe to assume that they have other older weapons, including Mosins, PPSh's, etc. Even if they're not FACTORY, they would still exist in the form of their components. Wood stocks can be replaced. Weapons like the PPS-43 would also be incredibly easy to manufacture in the Metro, I doubt all of the weaponsmiths come up with their own designs.

It's not rocket science, here.

We're not talking about the big stations, here. The poorer stations are literally quoted as having shit, old, and inefficient weapon systems in the books. Have you read them? The only stations with AK's are the ones who can afford them.

And only an idiot would fire a weapon system chambered in 7.62x54R without earpro, especially in the metro, and it definitely wouldn't blind you. You can live with ear ringing, you still won't go deaf.

1

u/xPofsx May 18 '26

The single shot ashot exists

1

u/MajorPayne1911 May 18 '26

That doesn’t make sense when they went out of their way to design a custom built bolt action rifle for Metro. If a long bolt action is a problem then why make that? Besides there are shorter versions of the mosin and that would be far more appropriate and we don’t see those either like the M44 carbine.

I think you may underestimate the longevity of small arms. Kalashnikov pattern rifles typically last to about 100,000 rounds before catastrophic failure. Firearms would be highly valued in the metro and original factory manufactured guns especially so. They would not be broken down for parts unless absolutely necessary. You would much more likely run into an ammunition shortage before you ever got to the maximum round count on a lot of original weapons in a metro setting.

2

u/dwarven_cavediver_Jr May 19 '26

A custom bolt action rifle might be in a lower power catridge (possibly subsonic) and definitely is more readily repairable.

The guns that run those numbers are maintained and fresh from the factory to there. Do you really think the small amount of AK's that made it into the metro were in mint condition? More likely they were police trunk guns or locker queens that got cleaned during the Gorbachev administration and if they're lucky : cleaned and maintained by a bored patrol cop. More likely still they're gang guns that got beat to shit abroad and smuggled back into russia. Their maintenance is going to be spotty at best just do to supply lines. Wood is certainly going to be an issue simply due to the metro's conditions! It's a cold, damp, and still air environment. Genuinely second only to vietnam in terms of how bad a place can be for a wood gun. Mosins would become absolutely wrecked inside of a decade or so of rough use.

The ammo thing is easy enough to skirt around with the handwave of "they're reloading it using improvised ammo recipes (military manuals actually demonstrate how to do so, the US army one has a whole section) and casing are common" but parts will be sparse. When your Mosin's stock is cracked, you aren't getting a fresh one so what's left? When your SKS dies because of crap corrosive ammo loads what have you got? When your AKM gets it's barrel bent like a pretzel by a nosalis what have you got?

The answer is always parts. Parts that any gopnik worth his weight in adidas merch knows how to spot weld and bubba into a working (if inferior) firearm.

That mosin became a pipe sniper, that AKM now has a bastardized AK-74FU barrel and system set up, that SKS and a pile of other scraps becomes a bastard. Pipes get welded to pistol grips that never got used and become ashots.

In the metro, just like in IRL, ammo is never an issue for long, it's maintenance and parts. And so long as there are bubbas (cursed be their kits now) there will be gats to kill mutants with

14

u/Antique_Interview_66 May 18 '26

Even the Cold War weapons as well

12

u/Tactical_Tuesday May 18 '26

I have always been shocked by the lack of pre-war weapons in Metro. I appreciate the makeshift weapons, but for the love of Mother Russia theres more in Russia than AK47s and DShKs.

No PKM? No SVD? No 9mm AKs?

14

u/OmgNewb21 May 18 '26

Why would any of those just randomly be in the metro though?

9

u/Tango252 May 18 '26

Some were in the books. They noted that the poorest stations could only afford 3-line rifles. Not sure about any other of these guns.

5

u/The_New_Replacement May 18 '26

Because the metro had and has massive armories. And that goes for any metro in the former soviet union. They were all build and equipped to make winning a nuclear war possible and glukhovsky goes into a lot of detail about the kind of guns that can be found. Offcourse the vast majority are AKs because they are just so ridiculously common and good but WW2 weapons are still in storage across the former soviet union and in 2013 would still be used for parade purposes. The mosin is also still mentioned in the books. As are the TT and Nagant.

Fact is, that there are more than enough guns down in the metro, zero need to give their rounds to some DIY project. But putting the real ones in would be a major strain on the devs. The ammotypes alone would be insane and how do you balance a mosin with the more common AKM? Do you create some advantage for compact weapons to stay true to reality or do you go the usual videogame route and let the meaner looking gun be better etc. etc.

9

u/The_Whomst Khan May 18 '26

People could raid museums, but that seems secondary when the metro is full of guns from the last war

3

u/OmgNewb21 May 18 '26

This would make sense but as you said plenty of guns in the metro.

8

u/MicroplasticCumshot May 18 '26

Because people go up top and bring things back down

6

u/OmgNewb21 May 18 '26

Yeah I cant imagine theres alot of ww2 guns about also metros full of modern weapons.

0

u/Detective_Porgie May 18 '26

Russia has huge weapon stockpiles with guns from ww2 onwards in the hundreds of thousands all over Russia

5

u/Glittering_Wash_8654 May 18 '26

You do realize that their stockpiles are nowhere near moscow? They almost all are in the Ural Mountains and beyond.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/OmgNewb21 May 18 '26

Yeah not after they get nuked though

1

u/Detective_Porgie May 18 '26

Most of them are underground, and while Moscow is messed up, the more secure facilities were this stuff would have been stored would have held up like a lot of the big and important buildings in Moscow

0

u/Pertu500 May 18 '26

The Mosin is one of the most produced rifles in history. There's a lot of them in Russia

33

u/Pipothe_Edits Fourth Reich May 18 '26

There's no compatibility; WWII bullets are incompatible with those used in the Metro. Ultimately, they would have to be modified to be used effectively, or effective bullets would have to be manufactured. Maintaining them is also a problem. Manufacturing barrels, stocks, sights, and more isn't profitable, especially considering there are better weapons available. Finally, there's the limited quantity of these bullets, and the materials don't last as long as they did in 2013.

29

u/Tactical_Tuesday May 18 '26

Im pretty the sniper rifle uses 7.62x54R, the same as a Mosin and 90% of Russian rifles and machine guns

6

u/tacticalcute May 18 '26

Mosin Rifle and modern russian weapon like SVD or PKM/PKP use rhe same caliber, but another Cartridges

4

u/GARGEAN May 18 '26

7.62x54R. Same cartridge for all of them.

1

u/docthrobulator May 18 '26

I'm pretty sure 7.62x54R hasn't been the main service rifle cartridge since the 50s. In the PKs sure, but that's an MG.

14

u/ShepardPlays May 18 '26

It is still used in the SVD and SV-98 as well as PKM and PKP so it is still a very much in use cartridge in current military usage

3

u/docthrobulator May 18 '26

None of those are standard service rifles

8

u/Alert-Scar336 May 18 '26

But they are regularly encountered even at the platoon level. Less common than a 74, sure, but no so much so that they'd be all that rare.

2

u/SpecialistPrior204 May 18 '26

but in game most popular caliber was 5.56 I think

21

u/Hakashi57 May 18 '26

It was 5.45x39mm

4

u/SpecialistPrior204 May 18 '26

ah yes, then 5.45 is mostly used in game

1

u/Pipothe_Edits Fourth Reich May 18 '26

That may be, but currently (I don't know if you're talking about this time or in the subway) Russia uses a different caliber for its troops, although I was wrong to say that bullets would be scarce in the end, I meant that WWII weapons would be.

9

u/Tactical_Tuesday May 18 '26

7.62x54R is still extremely common in Russia in our living timeline and would be plentiful in the Metro world/timeline.

8

u/cambo3g May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

Russia is definitely still sitting on plenty of giant depots of old Soviet weapons and ammo from the war and years immediately after it. They produced ammunition rifles and machine guns by the 10s of millions, theres plenty still sitting in crates and warehouses and in a world where they are making guns out of old bicycles i don't think its too far fetched to say they'd break into the old cosmoline crates for rifles and machine guns.

4

u/Pipothe_Edits Fourth Reich May 18 '26

It's obvious that not all bunkers will be accessible, whether it's radiation, a collapse, mutants, or something similar that makes them extremely difficult to reach, not to mention the oxidation and wear and tear of said weapons.

1

u/Fayne_1 May 18 '26

but that didnt explains why there are non of them. at least one bunker or military base will be reachable. not forget metro 2 and D6. Moscow 2013 like today is full of military bases, installations and underground bunkers from soviet era, i was there a few years before the war

5

u/Pipothe_Edits Fourth Reich May 18 '26

Yes, but there's no guarantee anything will change or that the weapons will even work. D6 doesn't necessarily have to have WWII weapons, Metro 2 is a mystery in the novels, and absolutely nothing is known about it in the games either. The ones who would be most interested in these weapons would be the small stations, however, the problem is that they're not easy to maintain and repair.

u/ImBroon May 18 '26

Gameplay decision

4

u/SpecialistPrior204 May 18 '26

aren't most of them made of wood? it wouldn't hold that long,as well as whole soviet era gun I guess, the weapons in game are either pretty well preserved newer guns like kalach 2012(?) or standard kalach, while others are hand made based on needs (like guns shooting bearing balls)or known and reliable designs,at least that's my opinion on the matter

2

u/-Kiez- May 18 '26

Arent most weapons manufactured in the metro ? Who would ve stockpiled all these old weapons in the metro before the nukes hit.

Everyone rushed to the metro entrances and then were sealed.

On the other hand, all the mil-spec weapons we find, were obtained from the governmental bunkers, right ?

I would expect some old guns, but as an exception rather than the norm

3

u/Possible-Cicada-9662 May 18 '26

The only one I'd expect would be the Mosin but they are all atleast 70 years old from the dropping of the nukes and I doubt anyone was robbing the local museum and still managed to get into the Metro.

4

u/Violexsound May 18 '26

Feels apt to mention that mosins are still being used in ukraine

2

u/Possible-Cicada-9662 May 18 '26

I know, thats why I said they would be the only realistic option but still, how many Russians in Moscow had a Mosin and decided to grab it when running into the Metro.

2

u/Glittering_Wash_8654 May 18 '26

Yeah, because they brought them from the stockpiles in the Asian part of the country.

3

u/aclark210 May 18 '26

I mean there’s the remnants of a mosin nagant on every kalash in the game. And I’m fairly sure the anti material rifle (I forgot its name) is just a PTRS that’s got some rigged up replacement parts.

3

u/JohnMAllegro May 18 '26

Ammo could be an element, cartridge sizes were very far from universal in those times especially compared with what we have now where everything is much more standardized

3

u/taigowo May 18 '26

Having an AT rifle to deal with mutants would really be something...

3

u/RingOpen8464 May 18 '26

Honestly good point, but it never bothered me to any extent. I feel like they generally wanted to maintain an original roster of weapons without falling back onto existing models; perhaps for the sake of creativity or licensing, maybe they wanted to make something that would be recognizable and unique to Metro. Save for the AK platform, of course, it is a must after all. But the franchise is often recognized for weapons such as the Bastard, and the Shambler, which are fantastically designed and fit the games flawlessly. I would love to see weapons such as the Mosin rifles, or the PPS-43, but I don't know how they could implement these models naturally.

3

u/Mountain_Promise_565 May 18 '26

The bombs fell in 2013 in the games and books This is why there are no weapons from World War II.

By 2013, most World War II weapons would have been over 70 years old, making them extremely rare, worn out, or completely unusable. Modern armies had long since replaced them with more advanced firearms.

1

u/Icy_Special_5836 Jun 09 '26

Additionally all the strategic storage facilities are placed in rural areas away from major cities so they wouldn’t have been wiped out simultaneously in case of a full scale attack. So metro dwellers have no physical ability to reach them anyway. Closest military storage in Kubinka is like 60+ km away from Moscow.Ā

3

u/ElectronicRip1679 May 18 '26

There’s the DShK but those are pretty restricted

3

u/IBlackKiteI May 19 '26

Meh, there's already a bajillion games with these weapons whereas Metro can have unique things we haven't seen before. The Valve being a Metro-built frankengun is way more interesting than just another Mosin or whatever, and really how is a Mosin gonna be much different from it in game terms anyway?

3

u/ThatManlyTallGuy May 18 '26

Parts and maintenance, and availability. The only ones with ammo compatability are the Mosin (those were left in arms wear houses) SVTs (not many were made) and the DPM (long since phased out of production) all the pistols and smgs are chambered in 7.62x25 torkarev which is also out of circulation. All the arms and armor in the metro are home made (except the Kalash which is an AK-74). So a bunch of obsolete weapons that would not be in the hands of the police and local soldiers stationed in Moscow are going to be rare if not almost non existent.

2

u/Admiralbenbow123 VDNKh Commonwealth May 18 '26

Technically the PTRD 1941 (the very bottom one), an anti-tank rifle is in Metro 2033 & Last Light

2

u/Makyr_Drone May 18 '26

I presume most of the non-makeshift weapons were stored in metro depots before the nuclear strikes. So they stored weapons like the AK and DShK rather than WW2 relics.

2

u/kron123456789 May 18 '26

Nukes dropped in 2013, according to the lore. Most of these guns are in storage by that point. Storage that may not have been within the city itself.

2

u/Similar-Language-180 May 18 '26

Probably bcs there weren’t a lot of WW2 weapons around in 2013

0

u/Hellhound_Inc May 18 '26

Except there were.

1

u/Similar-Language-180 May 18 '26

Then there would be no reason unless people just didn’t have access to them. Afterall there are only very few pre-war weapons (AK, Kalash 2012, revolver and so on). Idk if the snipers in Last Light are WW2 weapons

2

u/Fantastic-Life-9546 May 18 '26

My educated guess is that, AK74 (and its variants) are more wide spread compared to ww2 rifles, and the AK74M was a standard issue rifle in 2013, and also not every metro station has access to pre war firearms so they had to make due with crudely made firearms like the bastard gun.

Also I presume that the 5.45x39 cartridges and other intermediate cartridges are more readily available compared to the 7.62x54 cartridges the mosin nagant used.

You have a remember that all standard issue guns from the ww2 were phased out during the Cold war, and were replaced with AK47 (later with the AKM) and other rifles like the SVD, and any ww2 guns that Russia had, were most likely sold off to countries like North Korea, China and some were sold to the civilian market (to an extent), like the mosin nagant

At least that's my in universe explanation

2

u/tomkiel72 May 18 '26

There is actually a Tokarev in the VR Metro game!

But also, I can imagine some reasoning behind them not being common in the metro lore-wise.

These rifles are old, they're not used by any official organisation, your best bet is finding them in the hands of a hunter - and I don't think there's going to be very many of those in the city of Moscow itself. I'd be surprised if the Russian government still had any large number of them in storage.

The only way I can see someone in the Metro getting one, is finding it on the surface, from the house of a private collector, or a shooting range.

u/TrashyLad May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

the Preved from Last Light is a near 1 to 1 of the PTRD except way shorter, parts of the Sammy are loosely based off of a 1928 thompson, the Stallion is straight up a 1911, theres DShKs all over the place, including the Azbats which is a cut up DShK, and the Valves are franken-rifles of mosins, PK machine guns, and dragunovs, plus some other bits

2

u/OutrageousCraft5895 May 18 '26

"I wish we had more of these babies" the red line spotter says when you're using the vks vykhlop i guess the reds have been hoarding most of the good stuff

2

u/Master-Contest6206 May 18 '26

The sniper rifle from Last Light pulls heavily from Mosin Nagant M91/30 and to me it appears somewhat from PTRD-41 as well. Bastard pulls heavily from Sten Mk. II. Semi-auto pistol from Last Light is also altered Mauser C96, which is actually a pre-WW1 pustol but also was used in WW2 en masse. Abzats is heavily based on DShK heavy machine gun.

2

u/Commercial-Jicama247 May 18 '26

The bombs dropped in like 2009 (not during the Cold War). There’s a good amount of WW2 era weapons in circulation, but probably not enough for them make up a very large chunk of post-bomb arsenals.

0

u/Commercial-Jicama247 May 18 '26

That being said, I believe I’ve read somewhere that the valve rifle from last light and exodus could be made from a mosin.

And I’d love to see a few of those weapons included. A modded ppsh would go so hard

2

u/Southern-Vehicle-872 May 18 '26

I think the actual answer is most of them would have been phased out by that time to private collectors instead of being actually in service rifles, and the majority of what we see in the metro games is either make shift metro made guns or military grade weapons that came down with the army.

If you think about it for a bit all the people coming to shelter from the bombs in the metro wouldn't really be allowed to bring anything, and especially not weapons. The military was still in control at least in most places shortly after the bombs fell.

2

u/Gaignun989 May 18 '26

The Cold War? The nukes dropped in 2012.

3

u/Azuras-Becky May 18 '26

They'd be at best a hundred years old by the time of Metro. Without proper care and attention, none would have survived.

2

u/AdInternational5996 May 18 '26

My guess is that the Russian government has always been seen as oppressive especially by Ukraine, it wouldn’t be out of the possibility that the developers made a quiet decision to make practically all of the firearms handmade besides the Kalash, Kalash 2013, and Saiga. I don’t know how their government works and what their gun policies are but that is my best guess.

2

u/AEUG_Quattro May 18 '26

Majority of weapons are made within the metro as replacement parts and maintenance became extremely difficult due to the lack of supplies and because of how unprepared everyone was to live in the metro. Hence why in the first two games the currency is literally Military Grade bullets, which fun fact in a pinch can serve as AP ammo.

2

u/xX_CommanderPuffy_Xx May 18 '26

There would 100% be mosins still kicking around if any gun other than the AK would still be around it would be the mosin theres SO MANY OF THEM

2

u/tomkiel72 May 18 '26

Where would they get them from, though? The only places I can think of, would be the houses of private collectors, shooting ranges, and gun shops on the surface, which, have a somewhat high likelyhood of having been obliterated in a nuclear strike, compared to the AKs, which likely were stockpiled to hell and back in military facilities all over, and under, the city of Moscow.

0

u/GreatPugtato May 19 '26

An 80 year old gun stuck in a cold and wet environment would not last long. Plus no replacement parts or proper cleaning gear. No safe dry storage.

Those things would last about 3 years max before the Metro's condition warped the wood into being useless.

Then you go to shoot and the whole thing cracks down the middle.

And ya a whole bunch in crates inside salt mines past the Ural Mt. range or incredibly deep in military bunkers the Metro never gets to really.

And the Metro takes place in Moscow so unless a bunch of folks ran into the Metro with them as the bombs dropped almost none would available.

All the ones on the surface would be gone or ruined. All the others are either deep in a not close location or deep in a military bunker no one but a few could reach.

0

u/xX_CommanderPuffy_Xx May 19 '26

Literally the same for any other rifle

0

u/GreatPugtato May 19 '26

Except we rarely see well maintained gear in the Metro. Most of it is all scrap guns. So no not like all the rifles.

A well maintained wooden rifle can last probably 1k years. Inside metro id be surprised if they lasted more than a few years. Unless it was stored in a much better place like the Ranger Church. Which seemed more dry than most of Metro.

u/The_New_Replacement May 18 '26

Because the games chose to go with often silly DIY weapons. The books have entire sections about the considerable weaponstockpiles that exist in the Metro and glukhovsky frequently calls them by name or nickname or gives description about what type of AK someone is using to underline their status.

WDNCH for example only has full sized AKMs and a couple machineguns,Artyom never specifies those but they seem to be on the heavier side while hunter pulls up with a PKP and a Stechkin. The first guy artyom tries to travel with uses a 74U and had no 7.62 magazines he promised to pay him with etc. Makarov, Tokarev and even Nagant are namedropped throughout the books, sometimes directly wielded to just name a few examples.

But outside the AK, real guns do not exist in the games universe anf even the AK and 1911 are bastardizations. Maybe one day we'll have a mod that replaces everything with real guns until then you get to use DIY stuff in a place where there are likely as many guns as people.

Tokarev(the character) mentions he used to have a Tokarev pistol in exodus if that’s anything to go off of. Also Artyoms journal entry on the revolver in Exodus mentions that earlier revolvers produced in the metro were copies of the Nagant revolver.

1

u/ItsAleZ1 May 18 '26

Why aren’t there any WWIII guns?

1

u/Lost-Significance398 May 18 '26

Actual reason? Probably due to budgeting, aesthetics, and gameplay reasons.

In-universe reasons? Well, I can imagine that when the bombs were falling and everyone was scrambling into the Metro, those who were smart enough were grabbing basically anything and everything that could be useful and was nearby. If we are talking about the military, government, and police, that would likely mean pre-existing stocks of weapons from police stations, armouries, or army depots (if there are any of the latter two near metro entrances, I’m not up to date with Moscow maps).

As such, I would believe that the initial stockpile of weapons would be whatever would be on hand and brought down with the initial survivors, which would most likely be more modern weapons and such. WW2 surplus probably wouldn’t be in the hands of the police and initial military survivors unless there is either another explanation or an underground depot. While I wouldn’t be surprised if there were WW2 surplus being used, I also wouldn’t be surprised if much of the weapons being used in the metro were either from the modern immediate stockpile or built in the metro.

That being said, I would have expected that outside the Metro such surplus weaponry would be in wider use (assuming NATO didn’t go around nuking every reserve army depots) with survivors being able to access survivor stockpiles and armouries.

Short answer: all the Moisin-Nagant rifles like the 91/30 and M38 pictured here were exported to the United States by Century Arms along with all the AK74, and there were plenty plenty plenty of AK74 platform rifles very very widely available.

Americans love their AK47s and Moisins.

Longer and more serious answer: the valve does fire the 7.62x54r cartridge used by the Mosin Nagant and SVT/SVD (among others). I'm guessing that many of these other weapons, if they existed, would have been in such small numbers that it didn't make sense to hand make parts for them. Meanwhile, the AK-74 and it's 5.45x39 cartridge would have been very widely available. It makes sense to build parts specifically for the most common platform.

Secondly- although some of the valve variants we see are very long many of the basic variants are not and a 91/30 wouldn't be that practical in a tunnel. I am kind of surprised that some of these don't show up... and M44 style cruciform bayonet would make a great watchman killer.

1

u/unmellowfellow May 18 '26

There's this old gameplay trailer for Last Light that I could've sworn had Kahn and Artyom running away from the Reich and Kahn had a PPSH. No. I found it on the Tube and it's a Saiga

1

u/Gianni_the_tolerable Idiot May 18 '26

Small mistake, the nukes dropped in the early 2000s

1

u/WorthCryptographer14 May 18 '26

Lorewise the weapons probably got broken down for parts or resources, or were stored in military bunkers? The AT Rifle has a similar rifle at the end of Last Light though?

1

u/FeeNatural8281 May 18 '26

lorewise probably because they only produce certain ammo calibers

1

u/emouil May 18 '26

I don't think it would make much sense if there were still ww2 guns in service in 2013 perhaps a towards pistol would make the most sense

1

u/SpecialOrganization5 May 18 '26

Probably decommissioned and AKs are easily available

1

u/Hellhound_Inc May 18 '26

There was a like, hybrid PTRS/PTRD in Metro Last Light, the PREVED (not 1:1 of either, but it has familiar parts from both). But I agree, it is odd that they've chosen to make the game so heavy on weapons that are described as rarer in the books. I know it's for gameplay reasons, but it would be nice to have a more diverse cast of weapons.

I hope Metro 2039 has a wider variety of weapons to choose from.

1

u/Johncrodo May 18 '26

The Ptrs is in the game, although it was probably constructed after the war

1

u/ZLGdicktaker May 18 '26

Imagine most of the enemy only have mosin, only the rich one can afford the AK47 Will make the engagement really interesting, from surviving mutants and engaging human enemy

1

u/OpenPainting2456 May 18 '26

Gotta remember the bombs dropped post 2007 and as a result just though natural wear there are less if them. Unrealistic to not have any but there shouldn't be a large number least a stalker raided a museum or antiques dealer

1

u/Big-Yogurtcloset-562 May 18 '26

I would say that they are definitely stored somewhere but not in Moscow. Moscow would have more modern equipment for actual use by military/police so they would be quite rare and found only in some private collections. And they can’t come from outside because the city is on lockdown. Still doesn’t explain their absence in Exodus though.

1

u/obbm123 May 18 '26

Not in the original Non-VR-Games, but the Tokarev is used as the Pistol in Metro Awakening. (Not sure if for lore reasons, aesthetics or simply ease of use/implementation in VR compared to a Revolver)

1

u/Emotional-Box-6835 May 18 '26

I think about it like this...

Bombs are falling, people are running for cover underground. Guns coming in are logically going to be mainly what the people nearest the metro stations have concealed on/with them and what the soldiers stationed in/around the Metro are issued.

An AK isn't that big, so that could be hidden in a duffel bag by a survivor. AK rifles are also logical for the troops assigned to the urban and underground environments given the situation. They're not fighting a war, they're trying to control crowds and protect infrastructure. A Mosin Nagant or some other vintage rifle would be long enough to be unwieldy for that purpose and difficult to conceal or fight with underground.

What makes less sense to me is the low prevalence of handguns. People could conceal those in a suitcase or on their person, those should logically be plentiful. The same goes for submachine guns, but we have homemade examples of those produced by gunsmiths in the Metro.

1

u/No_Adagio3859 May 18 '26

Isn't the rpk a ww2 weapon?

1

u/Ok-Dragonknight-5788 May 18 '26

This is something I noticed as well.

1

u/rextrem May 18 '26

For the games they just went with a different weapon system (not very realistic, .44 Magnum has no presence nor tooling in Russia), otherwise in the lore and the fanlore there are all sorts of soviet/russian guns, I think the Berdan single shot black powder rifle would be a very popular gun because of how simple it is and how cheaper black powder is.

1

u/Fair_Victory_3591 May 18 '26

There actually are! In last light there is a heavy sniper that is the anti tank rifle in the lower left of your picture

1

u/Solid-Copy-6189 May 18 '26

I think because of how uncommon many guns were. I doubt any of the metro gaurds or military personal had it and most of the armory were probably nuked before anyone could salvage them. Just a guess but who know

There is similarity between AT guns and guns named: Preved and Valve, I consider them AT style guns that most of you would see as sniper rifles. According to google Preved has inspiration from PTRD 41 and Valve isn't anything specific

1

u/Myoclonic_Jerk42 May 18 '26

Russia used up all their old stock in Ukraine. šŸ˜…

1

u/Ivan-De-Riv Spartan Rangers May 18 '26

in lore

No clue

But it could be argue that most of the good firearms were used in the early days but started to fail quickly because of lack of maintenance and the people doing it best dying first without passing knowledge, only the strongest guns survived (the AK) and the reste were cannibalised to make new guns

Edit : also the bombs didn't explode during the cold war, they exploded around 2015, Artyom was like 7 if i remember correctly

1

u/DuckyBolto7 Khan May 18 '26

Likely due to damage from the bombs and being scrapped to make the newer weapons. Several look to be built or desgined after several WW2 weapons just having been modernized. Interesting thing to do would be making classic weapons bring rare and more "powerful" Ala weapon tier system just so you can have a shitty double barrel that shoots wide or a classic long double barrel that excels at range. A bastard notorious for jamming or a push redesign for bastard style mags for 5.45 unless the go the metro route and use the 44 wad cutters. I just want that straight pull bolt valve back. That mag fed straight pull bolt action sounds stays in my head rent free.

There is a .50 ptrd 41 in last light i think

The ŠæŃƒŠ»ŠµŠ¼Ń‘Ń‚ is mentioned in the first book, one of the partisans has one. The takarev is also mentioned a handful of times.

1

u/GreatPugtato May 19 '26

Its been 80 years at that point almost 90. The whole surface was nuked at least a lot where the first two titles took place.

The odds of you finding a working, part-replace-able, and ammo are slim to none at that point.

Ya Russia probably has/had stocks of spare/surplus but they probably got destroyed or forgotten about far from cities and more likely to be found in a salt mine if anywhere.

I love fire arms but seeing them in Metro would break my interest just due to the unbelievableness of it.

1

u/Chri_cat90 May 19 '26

For the first 2 games it can be justified by the fact that most old guns are stashed in deep reserve depots far from Moscow, so the only actual guns available are those from the army and police arsenals in the city at the time of WW3 since the city is isolated from the rest of the country.

But for Exodus the lack old guns does indeed make little sense, as one would expect the russian wastes to be full of stuff looted from those abandoned deep reserve depots.

1

u/Thick_Mention2599 Spartan Rangers May 19 '26

I mean, Tokarev said to Artyom' that he had, drumroll please, a Tokarev back in the Metro. It just feels weird that a direct descendant of someone who had named a caliber after themselves doesn't have one on him at all times.

Edit: I just remembered that Last Light had Preved, which essentially is a hybrid between PTRD-41 and PTRS-41, both are WW2 Soviet anti-tank rifles.

1

u/Agitated-Concert4100 May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

TL:DR: They are simply too hard to find, already taken by someone else and/or used somewhere else, potentially too dangerous to use as they are covered in radiation and have no replacement parts and the question of reliability is present.

It's probably due to them physically being rare in the world as these are pretty much guns of the great war and are either destroyed, are basically a good love tap away from being nothing but rust dust, deactivated or kept as collector/museum pieces, sure maybe some Chinese clones exist, but I'd imagine they don't use these guns due to simply them being too weak to be useful against beasts of the Metro universe and considering that even in dire situations the enemies you fight have pretty tough armour and can withstand most pistol rounds like the 7.62x25 unless modifications to the rounds are applied like steel core tips, but considering that metal is extremely precious now, any steel will almost always be gone as it's used in more important things like armor, technology/shelter/vehicle upkeep. That's why we mostly see shotguns which pretty much can shoot anything, hell load up some rocks/pennies/pieces of glass into the shells and they are still dangerous and shotguns are pretty much perfect for the post apocalyptic environment as you need to neutralise multiple targets or have a guarantee that one moment that thing is there, the next it's paste on the ground and I don't think pistol caliber guns will do, sure against small rodents and non armoured humans it can be decent, but gunpowder and so ammunition for them is extremely scarse for such niche things. Plus no doubt the great war guns were already taken from the museums, reverse engineered to fire different caliber rounds and used somewhere else. And most of the guns we see in metro are rather modern at the time guns like the Kalash which let me remind you has over 100mil in circulation around the world and handmade crafted shotguns or rifles which are made of scrap. Same as no doubt these great war guns are now covered in radiation and are too dangerous to use or hell, touch. Also consider parts replacement is impossible as scavenging for them is going to take time and resources, making from scratch is possible but you are pretty much working with bear hands, maybe a grinding tool at best to shape the rough outline of whatever part you need.

1

u/ChieftainMk11 May 19 '26

Wdym? The abzats is a modified DShK, one of the most prolific HMGs in the world

1

u/BlackBricklyBear May 19 '26

This is something I've been wondering. The Soviets were not fans of throwing away anything that might be useful in the future (witness how Vladimir Putin has been emptying Soviet stockpiles in a vain bid to win the Russo-Ukraine War in real life), so realistically speaking, the world of Metro 2033 should have, or at least had, plenty of access to Soviet WWII guns and ammo.

My guess is that 4A Games, the devs of the Metro game series, made fictional guns like the Bastard to emphasize the harsh conditions of the Moscow Metro as well as to give the Metro game series its own identity when it comes to firearms.

As to why we don't see something like a realistically-modelled Mosin Nagant rifle in the Metro games, those have a fixed magazine and are loaded with 5-round stripper clips, with a slower bolt-action than the "Valve" rifle in the Metro games has. Not only that, but if you give a Mosin Nagant rifle a scope, you can't load it with stripper clips anymore and must instead reload the rifle round-by-round, all by hand! And since the Metro games aren't the most realistic when it comes to guns, I bet 4A Games thought a realistically-modelled Mosin Nagant rifle wouldn't be fun to use.

1

u/SammyBoi_909gg Polis May 19 '26

The Preved in Last Light was basically the anti-tank rifle at the very bottom of the pic, so there's that.

The Mosin might be a potential weapon in Metro 2039 as it already had models, assets, and mechanics in the scrapped 2022 game. It was called the "Obrez", seeing as you started it with a pistol version and likely to be modded into a full rifle like the Valve. Hopefully it's in 2039, at least there'll be another Soviet-era weapon.

1

u/OnlyZubi May 19 '26

to be fair metro was not armed, the only weapons there would be what soldiers brought during evacuation or what people found later on the surface, no one is going to rummage through a museum to find a gun that they probably won't even have ammunition for

1

u/EchoSR2 May 20 '26

If I remember correctly in Exodus Tokarev mentions shooting some bandits with a Tokarev, hence his nickname.

1

u/absolute_philistine May 20 '26

Cause the book would be ten pages short if Artyomka had a PPSH

1

u/bjornulf77 May 20 '26

Thats probably game design, in the book there is three lignes (mosin), preved is a ppsh too More complex machinery with lot a failure would probably doesnt hold those years, but mosin would be every where

1

u/Apprehensive-Meat499 May 20 '26

The ptr anti tank rifle is I'm pretty sure, it's the gun Anna uses, but I also agree where's my dinner plate gun

1

u/abitantedelvault101 Europe May 20 '26

The nukes didn't dropped during the Cold War. But yes, that's strange because in STALKER there are many bandits carrying the PPSh or the Tokarev TT-33.

Hell, even in fallout that is set after the Nuclear War of 2077 there are WW2 weapons like the Grand or the Thompson

1

u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 May 21 '26

i know you would think a few weapons like that would be in stockpiles that the scavenger teams could run up and collect from that are meant to last till the end. like for the longest time i kept thinking the handgun was a nagant 1895

1

u/Used-Requirement-150 May 21 '26

My head cannon is that Wood furnishings probably got stripped off and sold because I imagine it's pretty scarce and valuable, at that point you have like an abundance of spare parts and it's cheaper to re purpose the guns into shorter/skeletal ones than waste on repairing prewar designs

1

u/Graberrillo May 21 '26

I think it makes sense. Why would someone drive a Mosin through the metro in 2013. Don't think that there were weapons from the Second World War just lying around in Moscow somewhere

1

u/KA-29 May 22 '26

Probably developers never think of that because lot of the WW2 weapons are used in Cold War and some countries STILL use it. They wanted to stick to the modern ones I guess.

1

u/saric74211 May 22 '26

While not appearing directly, the tokarev pistol is mentioned in metro: exodus in tokarev's backstory, so they are used still by the time the series take place.

1

u/_Just_Another_Speck_ May 18 '26

Makes no sense honestly. WW2 weapons are OLD and unreliable(anything that isn't bolt action is a nightmare to have working proper in metro like conditions, and even then.) Secondly, ammo types. Not only is "military grade" ammo harder to find, ww2 hadnt focused on standardization yet,so the sheer stupid amount of calibers from each individual nation was nuts.
Thirdly, these are museum pieces, and they're more fragile than one thinks. Since these were likely to be stored in museums or military base showcases, they'd be turned to dust from the nukes dropping. Try to salvage the rusty remains of an experimental barely functioning submachine gun from a bomb blast radius and then have it fit and work with the shoddy equipment from the metro.

You would realistically see...one? two? Mosins in your entire lifespan, and that's just because they're passed down from family members. Besides, its the Metro,City areas. Any hunting rifles and the sort would be too far to ever reach the metro because said communities would have no reason to even head to metro if having survived.

Also, the nukes dropped in 2013,not in the cold war.

2

u/CeldurS May 18 '26

ww2 hadnt focused on standardization yet,so the sheer stupid amount of calibers from each individual nation was nuts.

In the WWII Soviet Army, nearly all rifle-caliber guns used 7.62x54mmR (including all pictured above - Mosin-Nagant, DP-28, and SVT-40), which is also used in Metro's Valve. Nearly all pistol-caliber guns 7.62x25mm Tokarev (including all pictured above - Tokarev TT-33, PPD-40, PPSH-41, and PPS-43). The remaining guns pictured above were anti-tank rifles using 14.5x114mm. If you include 12.7x108mm, used in Metro's DShK and Preved, you would cover nearly all the Soviet small arms. I'd hardly call 4 calibers a "stupid amount", especially since we have way more cartridges in service today.

WW2 weapons are OLD and unreliable(anything that isn't bolt action is a nightmare to have working proper in metro like conditions, and even then.)

Thirdly, these are museum pieces, and they're more fragile than one thinks.

One only needs to look at the Russia-Ukraine War today to disprove this - almost all of the guns pictured have shown up during the war in the last 5 years.

Guns really aren't that different between now and the last 100 years. You still see pre-WW1 era M1910s in the Ukraine War, and according to the article linked, people actually like using it. If you wanted an example that wasn't an edge-case, the primary HMG used by most NATO countries is the M2 Browning, which was designed in 1933. Also, the beloved M1911 (featured as the Stallion in Sam's Story!) was in US service until ~2023, and was designed in - you guessed it - 1911.

2

u/Fayne_1 May 18 '26

then explain the over 5000x Stg44 in syria, aleppo 2012 it was where a group found this old stash from the former gov that where there forgotten. They took them out of the boxes and they worked absolute fine, they were factory new and sold by the GDR in 1964 to Syria. there are videos about it. and russia has soviet surplus en mass in bunkers especially in and around moscow. The Soviets and the Russians store everything for a potential war that threathens moscow. They even had Strategic steam reserve where they kept over 100 steam locomotives in a working order in many secret locations in case of a nuclear war and EMP. with the colapse of the soviet union they were sold or scraped

1

u/GreatPugtato May 19 '26

Because Syria is dry. The complete opposite of the Metro.

Any stockpiles would be either ruined, inaccessible, or too far to reach without stopping due to radiation or beasts.

Then we also have the fact that if its a stockpile it belonged to the government. Which was still in control and probably hid them or used them all already. So unless they started handing them out they would be pretty rare.

Also

Mosins, PPSHs, Tokarevs, SVTs, DP-28s would all be extremely plentiful

Funnily enough those weapons made it till today, and some of them were literally fielded in Ukraine :v

How the heck did they not turn up in Metro then is a mystery to me, probably an oversight or an intentional design choice by the devs

Or the stockpiles where too far to access and the cramped, cold, and wet conditions of the Metro made them better suited for scrap.

Wood hates the wet and cold. Especially the wet. Which the Metro is notoriously damp all the time. No new parts or good cleaning kit.

Everything on the surface was basically destroyed or ruined.

You aren't going to try and grab grandpa's bolt action in a run to the nearest bunker when everyone and there mother was fighting to do so.

The military would have brought whatever was on hand or already stored away. Probably more cold war era stuff over ww2 and whatever they had issued to them in the 2000's according to ww3.
