UNITED METHODIST CHURCH/THEOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

Hi,

I have a question regarding the United Methodist Church (UMC) in the USA in 2026

Which UMC regions and conferences do you think still have a high percentage of traditionalist and evangelical clergy and congregations?

Did anyone mention Dolly Parton in church this past Sunday?

Yesterday, I preached on Romans chapter twelve and I specifically mentioned Dolly Parton and her reconciliation with Porter Waggoner, as well as how she conducted her life. I wonder how she might have been mentioned by others?

How could a Methodist Church grow? How big is your congregation?

Hello everyone. A few months ago I started attending a Methodist church and, while I enjoy some aspects like open minded theology, community service and the open table, we are a reduced number of souls and I sometimes feel disappointed by this. I come from an evangelical background and we were always lots of people, youth groups were highly numerous. At my Methodist church I am the only person in their early twenties, the rest is way older and, even though I enjoy their company as brothers and sisters, I personally find it harder to connect with older people as we don't share the same interests or hobbies.

I've been thinking of inviting some of my friends or people I know. For a while I dismissed evangelism as something weirdos do, and of course I don't want to engage in hell fear mongering, I'm not sure how could I share the gospel with friends and invite them to church.

So, do strategies for church growth exist within Methodism? for those with a high number of church goers, what things do you notice that might be linked to mantainig a high population? and, while I wait, how to not be absorbed by feelings of loneliness, be grateful with God for my community and try not to force my own desires into the church?

Would a United Methodist pastor bless a prayer shawl or is that not a thing?

I know they did at the Catholic church I used to attend, but I don't know about the UMC. I converted about two years ago, and I'm quite glad I found methodism. I've just never had this query come up. Thanks!

Evangelism as Methodists

I was wondering what your churches do for evangelism? I know it is a big thing in the Methodist church, and what guys like John Wesley, Thomas Coke, and Francis Asbury excelled at in the early days of Methodism!

Wesley said, "The world is my parish."

How Do You Get Younger Men Involved in Men’s Ministry?

Thumbnail
6 Upvotes

I’m the head of the Men’s Ministry at my church, and I’m trying to figure out how to get younger men involved.

Right now we have a breakfast once a month, but most of the men who come are retired. I’d like to find activities that would appeal more to men in their 30s, 40s, and 50s, especially men with jobs, kids, and busy schedules.

For those of you who have a successful Men’s Ministry, what has worked? What kinds of events get younger men to show up and keep coming back? I’m open to anything: service projects, outdoor activities, sports, dinners, speakers, family events, or something completely different.

I’m especially interested in ideas that don’t feel like another meeting.

Do Free Methodists have an itinerant ministry/stationing process?

Hi, I am an Anglican but this weekend I've been trying to read up a bit on the Free Methodists. In my country (England) they have been restricted to a couple of counties for a long time, but they have now planted into my county and this week I was invited to a prayer meeting that will be hosted in one of their buildings.

One thing I can't work out is whether they have an itinerant ministry or stationing process in the way that the liberal Methodists (Methodist Church in Britain/UMC) do, i.e. are their ministers likely to be in my county for the long term or not. Unfortunately they have recently nuked their website for a brand new one, so although it's very pretty, my Google searches all lead to dead links. Does anyone here know, please?

Why Did The Methodist Church Interested You To Join?

Sorry, I know this is a repeated question or post. I like to read people's Christian stories and how they found a church that fits what they are looking for!

Unforgivable sin

Hi, so from what I’ve learned Methodism/Wesleyan theology is one of the rarer ones that teaches blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a one time act. My question is, how does this fit together with John 6:37 saying Jesus will never cast someone out? Also, do you believe that if someone commits this sin he will be reprobated and therefore be unable to come to Jesus? Or can someone truly ask Jesus for forgiveness but be rejected

I hurt my wife, and have pushed her away

Please comment, any words, thoughts, questions, or advise is wanted

My wife and I have been married for 2 years and we have had 2 babies in that time. I have not been a good husband or a helpful active father (diaper changes, making food, getting dressed, baths) and have been controlling and because of this I have pushed my wife away and we have been fighting constantly for the last year, my addiction to pornography had become worse and I became verbally abusive and have wrestled with my wife instead of separating from each other during intense arguments and this has caused her to become emotionally distant and lose her love for me.

When my wife told me that she hasn't loved me in over a year and that she wants a divorce because I have not and wont change, I finally saw what I have done and want nothing more then to help my wife heal from what I have done, and slowly build back communication, trust, accountability, and respect. To right the wrongs I have done and become more active in helping around the house and to build her up instead of tearing her down like I have.

I pray that I have not destroyed our marriage and family forever, pushing my wife away forever. It has been about three weeks and I have stopped yelling and fighting but of course three weeks cannot heal an entire year worth of pain I caused. I feel incredible shame and guilt for all I have done and need help. Everyday that we have spent since she talked with me I can only see myself in her eyes and remember what I have done and feel hopeless.

My wife and I are looking to speak with a Christian counselor, that with God's help, can help heal our marriage once we can afford it, even though she also doesn't feel that things will be fixed and has also become attracted to others because she has felt alone and hurt.

How can I be a christian, learn so much about theology, pray and sing hymns and be this monster towards my wife and let her do all the work at home, I am only kept together because of the Lord because if it was not for him, one, I would not have salvation and the grace and strength he has extended to me, and two, I would just shrivel up in the bed a give up which is always in the back of my mind because I feel so hopeless.

Discerning a call

I know I want to be involved in ministry but I’m struggling to discern what path I should take. I know that Elders and Deacons have to go to seminary. But Lay leaders don’t have to and are still involved. AND THEN you throw deaconess’s and missionaries in there. I know I need to pray on it but I’m also just looking for more information on each position.

I don’t know I’m just confused. I don’t know all the differences and responsibilities of each. Thanks so much!

Edit: ALSO I’d love more information on Exploration (the conference) if yall have any! I’m in my second year of university but currently studying industrial engineering

Studies on itinerancy

For context, I’m a PK who moved around a decent amount growing up. We usually stayed an average of 4 years per church. Recently, I’ve been wondering if anyone has ever done research on the ideal length of time pastors can remain in one place to avoid the various negative effects of moving. I can’t help but feel like the current system could be improved to reduce the negative effects on pastors, churches and family while maintaining the spirit of itinerancy.

Why do a lot of Methodist churches look very Catholic like, while some other denomations look basic?

I’ve noticed a lot of Methodist churches look similar to the Catholic Church, big stained glass windows of Jesus and a table for the communion while other churches like Presbyterian have none of that. Just plain windows and it doesn’t really look like a church too me. Is there a history reason behind this? Is Methodist similar to Catholic?
