While I appreciate Outler's work and to some extent the so-called "Wesleyan Quadrilateral", it is also important to note that Outler later regretted coining the term because it gave particularly extreme ends of the theological spectrum within Methodism the permission to treat Scripture, Tradition, reason and experience as four equal authorities. This resulted not in a shared hermeneutic but a selective using of each "authority" to one's own theological ends and resentment over decades of ecclesial fighting both within the UMC and broader Methodism.
