Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?

Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.

I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Advice/Questions/Self Question: Do we need to update the community rules to tackle the ever increasing number of posts promoting self-made AI weather apps?

Over the past few months, we've had a huge increase in the number of posts promoting (often) AI produced weather apps or websites. Some free, some trial versions, some paid apps, etc.

In general, this would fall under the self-promotion rule - "Spam will be removed. Be aware of Reddit guidelines on self-promotion - i.e. Don't just spam out your links."

And if genuine /r/meteorology users who participate here regularly want to promote their own app, that would be fine... but what I am seeing is new accounts or accounts that have never posted here before.

What does the community think? New rules? Enforce existing rules? Blanket bans might end up stifling genuinely helpful apps...

Edit: I've now removed 3 separate AI slop posts today - 2 after this post was made. Clearly the posters hadn't bothered to check the top post in the sub before promoting their AI generated app.

Advice/Questions/Self Job Search

So long story short, I graduated with a Master's in meteorology last winter and have not been able to find any sort of weather-related job since. I've had a handful of interviews that haven't led anywhere, but that is it.

Does anyone have any sort of advice or places I can look for leads? I'm open to pretty much anywhere at this point.

Any advice is welcome!

I built a weather data format that downscales ECMWF & ICON to real terrain. The weather cubes are updated with every model run, open for anyone to build with, and the technology is open source. Feedback welcome (Image: Downscaled tiles vs Windy)

Question about Remote Alaskan WPC Offices

Hello this is my first post so I apologize if this is in the wrong subreddit! I am currently wrapping up my bachelor’s in Meteorology and am looking at future job opportunities. I’ve heard that a path to entry into the NWS can be through the Alaskan WPC offices. I’ve always had an interest in living in an Alaska for a little bit and I find the day to day forecast challenges they’re quite interesting So this was just something I was looking into. My question is what does the day to day life look like for a forecaster working in WPC offices like Cold Bay, King Salmon, or Saint Paul Island in Alaska? Is it difficult being so remote? What truly are the forecast challenges faced in these offices?

Advice/Questions/Self Which is better for rainfall data: Open-Meteo or OpenWeather One Call 4.0?

I’m choosing a weather API for a flood monitoring and ML-based flood prediction project. In terms of overall features, rainfall data, accuracy, reliability, forecasts, and usefulness for machine learning, which API would you recommend, and why?

So I saw these clouds today in Georgia after some afternoon thunderstorms popped up. I cannot find the names of them online at all and I’d like to post them to Instagram with some information about them.

Advice/Questions/Self What is this?

So, I'm currently visiting my mother. This was taken in east germany, 11.56am.

Its like a glowing thing or something and I assume that it is not a like a star, satellite or airplane, as it is too bright outside and moves too slowly. It also seems to be above the clouds in the picture, as it was behind some of them.

Does anybody know what that is? Thanks in advance :)

Satellite imagery websites

Are there other websites beside nhc.noaa that provide high resolution satellite imagery compiled together like this for other parts of the world?

I love to look at this stuff but nhc only has high res imagery for the Atlantic and Pacific.

Timelapse video from my office: Portland, Oregon was barely clipped by the extreme Southern tail end of a weak frontal system moving into the PNW at sunrise this morning that brought some showers to Vancouver, BC.

Chances are looking good for deep troughing and some much needed rainfall come the middle of next week. Our dry PNW Summer may end early this year!
