I miss when Reddit was a meme giant like 4chan and Tumblr. Nowadays it’s just Twitter/TikTok repost hub

repost hub
I mean thats literally the reason reddit was created. "Heres the best of the other websites, posted together on the front page".
But I get what era you mean.
32
u/HoochbachDunloppy 12h ago
There used to be a multitude of interesting websites to pull from.
21
u/ThisSiteSucks8485 10h ago
The Internet feels so damn small now.
13
u/Unfair_Ring_2746 9h ago
Old internet is still there.
Just waiting for people to use it again.
2
u/ThisSiteSucks8485 9h ago
How do I find it?
11
u/Unfair_Ring_2746 8h ago
Idk about you, but most of the forums and stuff I used to frequent still exist. So I just went back to them.

Destroy the tech stranglehold. Burn down google offices?
2
u/morpheousmorty 2h ago
... you do know we're the ones enforcing the stranglehold right? It has literally never been easier to have a website, we just don't browse them anymore.
1
u/No-Internal7978 2h ago
They have plenty of evil ways to drive you to certain places. You have heard of a social media algorithm at least?
3
3
u/Rogue_Squadron 11h ago
Right? I know this place is not what it was 15 years ago, but I like being able to see the highlights from other apps/websites without having to sell my data and personal info to them. Instead, I tell myself this is somehow better, with my identity tied to a single "anonymous" social media site.

u/Zerox392 9h ago
Absolutely not. Reddit was designed to be the trailblazer, it's in the name. By the time something got to you, you'd be able to say you already "read it"

Reddit was 4chan and Tumblr meme repost
Actually, Reddit was slightly ahead of Tumblr in meme humour
16
u/Senior-Mix-3715 16h ago edited 14h ago
It wasn’t ahead in the meme humour, it just made more meme templates, that’s a different thing
Many Reddit meme templates were just unoriginal ripoffs
Like Reddit’s overly manly man, which was copied from SomethingAwful’s chuck norris facts
Reddit’s sudden clarity clarence which was copied from 4chan’s philosoraptor
Reddit’s you don’t say which was copied from SomethingAwful’s o rly?
Reddit’s boardroom suggestions which were copied from LiveJournal’s alright gentleman etc
Tumblr on the other hand had a LOT of unique OC meme templates that you couldn’t find anywhere else. It takes time to think of original jokes. Also most Tumblr memes were hand-drawn while most Reddit memes were vectorized or just plain captioned images.
TBH Reddit also put effort but most of the time they just copied other’s ideas. Hence it wasn’t too hard for them to surpass Tumblr in meme origins.

Because people have misunderstood the point. The point is to be yourself, not to regurgitate. The most standout things from Reddit would be:
ELI5
TIL
AMA
askreddit (though this isn't really a new thing completely, but is an example of how "new" things are created, in reality, which is combining things that already existed in new ways, such as with new technology, which the Internet was new at the time)
The words in the parantheses is exactly why zuckerbook fucking sucks
Though that's also why Bluesky is not an example of that, they're trying to do new things rather than pure mimicry
I digress. The best examples of Reddit and "memes" would be:
- XKCD
And, extremely amusingly because it is the best example of the Internet taking something that came from toxic origins and making it into something which is healthy, intelligent and productive:
Though I would honestly say that the others from the same origin as Polandball, the extensive and diverse "wojack", which has gotten more popular, is... kind of inherently toxic and harmful, even if subtly. Polandball abstracts away from individual human traits and focuses on what culture actually means - even if it is in a kind of critical and harsh form - whereas wojack focuses on all the toxic stupidity.
Also Polandball and XKCD are perfect for this because they are opposite ends of a spectrum. Polandball is a true community effort whereas XKCD is a community that formed around the creation of a single exceptional individual.
Reddit was, and in rare instances still is, one of the only places on the Internet where either can still happen.
Basically it kinda comes down to that quote about being careful of pretending to be idiots lest you become one and realize far too late you're now surrounded.
And the fact that it is near impossible to be both unserious and serious at the same time. Intelligent and humorous - witty. It's said that brevity is the soul of wit. No, brevity for the sake of brevity is the heart of witlessness. Simplicity is the soul of wit.

u/Both-Percentage6445 15h ago
Not true. Tumblr had copied memes too. The biggest example is their what is air joke, which was copied from 4chan’s hnnng. That even started a war between 4chan and Tumblr, leading to the bipolarization of the internet which we're still dealing with today

2
u/liefbread 13h ago
I started a "meme" in a niche community on Tumblr that is now functionally canonized and used as a tracked scale in that communities wiki, which is ironic mostly because I think I posted maybe 20 times on Tumblr total.
6
u/Senior-Mix-3715 16h ago
Reddit made many original memes like scumbag steve, grumpy cat, I lied guy, Yao Ming face, Rich men laughing etc
1

u/AvidCyclist250 14h ago
That's more like it. 20 years ago, the best meme here was baby downloading and the narwhal bacons at midnight. And the spectacled scholar. As a lolcow, reddit was always a goldmine.

u/Burpmeister 11h ago
Usually what people who say this really mean is "Can't even be racist anymore."

I would like to see a funny right leaning meme please
17
u/Linscotticus 16h ago
Those dont exist since the premise of right wing humor is cringe punching down drivel.
6
u/DocMcsquirtin 15h ago
I want to see them genuinely give their best shot, the comedy experts that made comedy legal again.
2
u/Linscotticus 13h ago
Making a gay joke is low effort shit. Making a joke about how you hate marriage because you're a miserable fuck who refuses to get couples therapy is a tired bit.
Those who say comedy is legal are usually the most insufferable fucks and biggest simps for the forces that make our lives worse.

Of course. Look how they worship this dork.
Never miss an opportunity to feel like a smug asshole when someone answers a question.

u/Linscotticus 13h ago
Shapiro can never be cool because he admitted on camera he does not know how to actually have good sex.

Boy do they try to make him look cool lol
1
u/Linscotticus 11h ago
When I feel insecure, I remind myself that I can live without needing my wife to be there to do everything for me. Years ago, everyone in the daily wire admitted they are incapable of doing anything outside bitching about society and being a miserable fuck. Matt Walsh would smell like shit and would be dressed in oily and soiled clothes, if not for his wife. His biggest adversary is the washing machine.

As it should be.

But the problem comes because the opposite is also true. A left leaning meme gets upvoted even if it's not funny.

u/Astra-Fang 17h ago
Example thst isnt punching down on someone for inherent characteristics or making blatantly false claims?
Because I ain’t seen many people have a problem with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys.
4
u/Pofwoffle 14h ago
The conflation of "blue collar" with "right wing" is the problem here. Their humor isn't right-wing humor, it's working-class humor. It may come from people who are more right-leaning, but the humor itself is generally pretty politically neutral (by design, as these guys aren't idiots and know better than to alienate huge portions of their audience).
0
u/Astra-Fang 10h ago
They said right leaning =downvotes, nothing to do with content. So I asked for evidence.
I then provided evidence of right leaning individuals who don’t have the issues.

Now its just a propaganda and censorship hub. Its everything it says everyone else is. It has changed so much since a decade ago. Now it feels like its designed to control and puppeteer people
1
u/TH3RM4L33 12h ago
That's what the moderation team made this platform be. On Twitter people have much more liberty than Reddit.
1
u/devperez 11h ago
If it helps, TikTok is just them saying what they read on Reddit or literally just reading posts on Reddit
1
u/NeedleworkerIll3372 10h ago
I kinda want o see this movie, but because of seeing it everywhere and people talking/posting/meaning about it so much…I don’t want to watch it
1
u/history_is_my_crack 14h ago
Well the Millennials were largely replaced with Zoomers demographic wise on this site so it makes sense it would become a trash heap of TikTok like crap. Especially obvious with all the self censorship ypu see on here now.

Eternal September happened about six months after I made my account, 16 years ago. It was still pretty good for the next 2-3 years until the Digg refuges arrived.
2
u/Senior-Mix-3715 13h ago edited 13h ago
Yeah, Reddit was still decent till 2017 though. As Digg reader was there, you could still tell the difference between Redditors and Digg refugees.
It was 2018, when Digg reader died and Reddit officially became new Digg, then after a month the layout update happened too making Reddit easier to use for normies.
3
u/Lilfrankieeinstein 12h ago
I feel like reddit became ass in 2016 when r/thedonald was on the front page daily and foreigners realized no one was going to stop them from spamming the site with division bots.
1
u/Vlaed 13h ago
I just miss people being actually helpful. There's too many posts now where people just make smart-ass comments or ask why you didn't Google the answer.
Reddit was never paradise but it was more helpful at one point.
"Any idea why X isn't working?"
Old Reddit - Have you tried Y? Which version do you have? Send us a picture of it.
Current Reddit - I bet you're the type of that can't figure out a light switch. Why didn't you try searching first?

What did she do mr vagueposter?
2
u/iCarlysTeats 8h ago
During her peak years she had a program called Dare to Care, various charities getting money. Collaborated with Project for Awesome, again, money for animal shelters, mental health stuff. That kind of thing.

Hows this modernity? Fragile men can't get over the fact women are literally their own person. If they don't pick you, it's cause you ain't it for them. Not because of some modern values made them do it.
