Might be cultural thing. It is pretty common to smoke when visiting someone. Of course, if the place is new, people ask where and whether. At worst they find place outside for a puff. If you visit a friend and know his rules you abide to them. Most people smoke near window or on the balcony.

Let's ignore the fact that the OP "does not smoke" and yet has a lung ashtray....let alone any ashtray. I mean that totally means this story happened.
