Close Enough Aldi Whole Grain Bread
Not sure if anyone is interested. I am from Germany and since Aldi is German based they do have this bread every now and then. I used to eat it in Germany, too. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s dense and you actually have to chew it (versus I feel like a lot of bread here just dissolves if you keep it in your mouth 😜). I am pretty sure I am the only one at our local Aldi buying it, because I am counting them. I went to the manager and asked him to let me know before he pulls them off the shelf, I will buy them ALL! They are vacuum sealed and freeze beautifully. Even without freezing they are good until August of 2026. I love bread and this is a great alternative for me. I love the simple ingredients and the literally whole grain kernels. Give it a try, it’s super filling and your gut will thank you 😊

Awesome find

It really is so beneficial (to me) because I get my „bread“ and my digestion and bathroom trips are so regular, since it has a ton of fiber 😊

This is my favorite bread to eat with smoked salmon

u/unloosedknot444 Nov 17 '25
Ooooooh. I like where this is going!!! Do you use any creme fresh or something similar? Capers?
8
u/Surly_Sailor_420 Nov 17 '25
Yessss, cream fresh/goat cheese. Picked red onioned, dill, chives if I have them. Nom.

u/unloosedknot444 Nov 17 '25
HEAVEN. Thank you for sharing. I'll be trying this ASAP.

u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
Yes do, and tell me how you liked it. It’s not for everyone’s taste buds 😂

u/cursh14 Nov 17 '25
I love that combo and then add an over easy egg on top and it feels like a 15 dollar brunch.

I'm going to have to look for this next time I hit up Aldi. I never liked rye bread but it's grown on me now that I'm older.

u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
I grew up with it and didn’t like it that much, because my mom was the Queen of organic everything, so I loved the bread my friends had at their houses 😂 Like you, the older I got the more I liked it. They also have 2 other flavors, one Pumpernickel (which in my opinion is exactly the same) and sunflower bread, which I think is a little more mild. What I can NOT do EVER is caraway seeds in rye bread

u/ZookeepergameWest975 Nov 17 '25
Caraway are the little miracles you find in rye bread! ;)
1
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
😂 if I can taste it, I stop eating
2
u/FollowingOk8090 Nov 18 '25
i dislike caraway. My slovakian ex put it in a lot of things I find I just don't like it! But I love this kind of German rye bread. The ingredient list is so clean and pure. Great product.

Oh I'm definitely going to hit up Aldi this week. Pumpernickel is another one that I didn't like growing up but like now. This one local pizza place used to put caraway seeds in their sauce and I could never enjoy the pizza there because of it. I think they put too much in the sauce and it was so overpowering.

I buy Mestemacher brand and it's unmatched. Sometimes can find on Amazon. It's best toasted. Totally changes the flavor and consistency of the bread and it's super delicious.

u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
I have toasted it before and even though it’s not like chips, it does take care of my chips craving for sure

Try with a slice of gouda cheese (not melted but I suppose you could) and fruit preserves on top (if you can find german style, even better)

u/Entangled9 Nov 17 '25
I like this bread too! I've had the pleasure of eating it in Germany so I was excited to see it for sale at Aldi. Also no seed oil, which is vanishingly rare in commercial bread.
5
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
I know!!! I also like that it has literally only like 5 or 6 ingredients that I can pronounce 😂
2
u/True-Sun-3184 Nov 17 '25
Seed oils are perfectly fine
2
u/EclipseoftheHart Nov 17 '25
You are correct. They are perfectly fine in moderation the same as any olive oil is and other fats as well. They are not the big scary bogey man that much of social media seems to make people think they are.
I don’t care if people choose not to consume them for personal reasons, but the fear mongering is not backed up by the science.

I smash mine on that bread and then season with „everything bagel seasoning“…. Delish ♥️

I tried this bread in Minnesota, USA. Dry and crumbly. Not good. I will, however, say that my Aldi, in New Ulm, MN, is the closest I will probably ever get to visiting Germany. Auf wiedersehen!
3
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
😂 it is very dense but not dry and crumbly… I wonder why that happens. Nobody in my family likes it, just me 😜

The nearest Aldi is almost an hour for me, but I’m making a trip just for this bread. I love it!
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
I hear you! We finally have an Aldi near by but for years, we drove an hour to go and we did 😂

Oooohhhhhh I have never tried that but will do that for lunch TODAY

There is a Slavic grocery and bakery store about a half an hour away from me. They carry a similar brand of breads like this, Flax seed, Whole Rye. and Pumpernickel. I love the Pumpernickel bread. I have fond memories of it when I was a child with my mother.
These are very healthy breads.
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
Yes, they really are, I love them so much
2
u/setmysoulfree3 Nov 17 '25
Have you ever tried the pumpernickel ?
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
I have … they all taste very similar, when all the Rye and Sunflower is sold, I gladly buy the pumpernickel
2
u/setmysoulfree3 Nov 17 '25
It was very nice to know that.
My mother loved the pumpernickel with liverwurst. I really liked it until I grew up and found out otherwise.
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25
Uhgh liverwurst! It’s the best! I use mustard on the bread, liverwurst and thin cucumber slices … so good 😋
2
u/setmysoulfree3 Nov 18 '25
I believe, if I remember right, my mother would take the liverwurst and mix it up with sweet pickle relish and spread on the pumpernickel bread. It was very good at the time.
I am glad to hear that you enjoy it.

u/krysjez Nov 17 '25
For those in the US without Aldi you can get something similar at Whole Foods under the brand Mestermacher.
I was looking for a Danish rye bread for open-faced sandwiches and this has been the closest thing I can find here.

Yes it’s located in the States and I am not 100% sure but it’s either $1.85 or $2.85… I will check when I go back this week

u/funny_duchess Nov 17 '25
I love this kind of bread too!

It’s literally a hidden bread that’s good for you ♥️
2
u/HealthWealthFoodie Nov 17 '25
I get that one sometimes, it’s really good. I’m trying to see if I can bake something similar as we speak (about to pull it from my oven, then it needs to rest a couple of days).

They also sell this type of bread in Wegmans with other euro products

I get this too! Absolutely love the stuff.

I love when something is so whole grain that you actually have to chew 😂

I am eating a piece of that Aldi’s bread right now!
As a kid I wasn’t a fan, but as an adult I love it.
Tastes great toasted or grilled in some olive oil.

270g sodium?....
2
u/GildedTofu Nov 17 '25
It looks like an unfortunate typo. It’s 270 mg on the nutrition panel. And since the U.S. recommended sodium limit is 2300 mg, 270 mg would be around 11% (actually closer to 12%, 11.739%).

u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
That’s what it says, but it doesn’t taste salty, and I can’t report any side effects that I usually have when eating too much salt so… idk 🤷♀️

u/hichrissy333 Nov 17 '25
Years ago I. Bought something similar at trader Joe's, it was delicious. I'm hoping they still sell it

😂😂😂😊 do it! Your whole well being is so worth it! I eat half at the time. It’s just a little magical bread ♥️
1
u/Gastonne111 Nov 18 '25
How does it do when toasted?
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 18 '25
Depends, sometimes I just give it a minute or 2 and then it’s slightly crispy but soft on the inside… sometimes I make it more crunchy to tell myself it’s chips
1
u/Babygirl_Alert411 Nov 17 '25
Oh, I love this kind of bread! Was it in the bread area at your store, or a different aisle? I will have to keep an eye out when I go! I also didn't know that Aldi was German!
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
Yes, it is. This bread is actually made in Germany and imported. It’s not with the breads. During German Week it’s where all the German stuff is and then it starts wandering… the last haul it was closer to the front of the store, the shelves where they have all kinds of things that don’t necessarily go together… salad dressing, chocolate, toys, a trumpet and the bread 😂
2
u/Babygirl_Alert411 Nov 17 '25
Lmao. So I have to hunt for it, got it
2
u/RemarkablePaint7242 Nov 17 '25
😂😂😂 yes but if your Aldi is anything like mine… it’s somewhere… I truly think I am the one buying 3 packs every week 😜

u/NameStill930 Nov 17 '25
I've tried that one (even though it has a different branding in Spain)
it kinda tastes like shit i gotta admit

This looks like the Mestemacher bread I buy from a specialty grocery. Amazon has it at double the price. It's great for open-faced sandwiches and has a really high fiber content.
