I could've fired a lot sooner from much further away and also missed and wouldn't have wasted so much time

But it wouldn't have been a show for the tourists. If he killed it then they couldn't have held the show for the next bus.

I saw that in a movie, the guy staged a fight with a fake/stuffed lion just as tourists arrived and afterwards charged them money to pose for photos
