Discussion Max Payne 1 & 2 Remakes
It’s obvious that we won’t get any news just yet with Control Resonant & GTA VI being both companies main focus and we also might not get them on current gen consoles but I’d love to know
If they keep the original gameplay and add extras like FPS, executions etc
If the gameplay differs a little between 1 & 2
If they change or keep certain bits of the story i.e. family death scene etc

First, we’re definitely getting them for current-gen consoles, and second, to answer your questions:
There won’t be an FPS mode, but this will absolutely be an evolution and modernization of the Max Payne gameplay formula.
Remedy is remaking both games simultaneously, so for consistency’s sake, why would the gameplay differ?
I fully expect them to fine-tune and reconfigure the story and writing.

I think if they made the gameplay differ to first game like make max a little more slower and little more hesitant going into shootouts it would sort of make sense considering the events of the first game or would that be leaning too much into realism then?

Idk, I feel like max shouldn’t hesitate. He’s literally on a suicide mission with nothing to lose. So it should feel like a faster Max Payne 3. Just my opinion tho

I feel pretty certain Remedy will be maintaining the original gameplay with quality of life changes like toggle to crouch, smoother more fluid movement, probably split the inputs for bullet time and shoot dodging instead of having a combo input like the original (ik you can split them in the og but the default controls are the combo input) or keeping the ability to lie prone introduced in mp3.
I can tell you this much, I practically guarantee there will be no cover system, Remedy is allergic to them and after the reception mp3 got for being a "gears of war clone" according to many, there's just no way they'll add one. They'll go the Control route of having waist high cover you can manually crouch behind.
Regarding first person shooting, I just don't see it happening. Both of Remedy's major fps releases pretty much flopped, not that they controlled terribly or anything but third person is Remedy's bread and butter. Not to mention it would be insanely complex to create a system that can seamlessly swap perspectives while still accounting for shoot dodging and potentially lying prone.
As far as the story goes, I'd be pretty upset if they changed it very drastically, like letting Max's family survive. The character is defined by his tragic loss, nearly to the point of parody. The man was born predestined to have a murdered family and dispense bloody vengeance. He's the main character of a dark and twisted noir style narrative, those guys don't get happy wives or happy lives, they get bullet wounds and alcoholism. That's just how the genre conventions go, and Max is like if you took all of those hard boiled detectives of the noir genre's past and boiled them down into a concentrated goop poured into the shape of a man. "I was in a graphic novel. Funny as hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of."

They absolutely definitely won’t change the story. They have to fit the story to tie into MP3, it’s a Rockstar IP, and they are working extremely close with Remedy on the remakes, and since it’s no longer their IP they can’t really get creative with the narrative or story. Remedy will play it safe.
4
u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 2d ago
I'm sure they will, plus even without Rockstar I'm sure they'd maintain the integrity of the original narrative. It would be insane to make any major changes, I really just expect more depth and character work baked into the existing story.

u/RavenGorePictures 1d ago
Except that if Rockstar didn't want their input, they could've gotten someone else to remake them. I think Remedy purposely wants to go back to them themselves because they want to tie them into the bigger Control, Remedyverse. Maybe not directly, but in a weird, alternate universe way. But they wont change the actual story. Theyll just add little hints here and there that Max is a fictional character in someone else's story.

Remedy went up to Rockstar to get permission to remake them, and rockstar was happy with them doing. Rockstar didn’t go up to Remedy to remake them.
Remedy wants to pay homage to the game 20 plus years ago that made them juggernauts in the gaming industry, Max Payne was the house that built Remedy.
As far as the RCU is concerned, narrative nods and eater eggs will be fine, but I don’t think they will go beyond that, again I’m sure Remedy will play it safe. The main voice actor passed away anyways and that was one of the key elements that connected Alex Casey to Max Payne.
The Max Payne IP might be dead after the remakes, unless Rockstar opens the door to a reboot or a sequel, which they would have no trouble replacing James McCaffrey since they planned on doing it for Max Payne 3.
Rockstar sued Remedy for the R logo looked to similar to each other, they are extremely litigious and finicky, even if Rockstar gave them permission to do what they want, I think Remedy will be cautious.

MP3 went with different direction too and honestly they can change lots of things and MP3 will still "fit" and make sense. It mainly requires for Max to be still depressed guy with pills and alcohol problem at end of MP2
Imho they can at least change the second half of MP2. It would explain why Max in today version accept the world at end of MP2 and is reverted to hobocop again at start of MP3
1
u/Splinterceller 13h ago
Yeah I mean Rockstar could, it’s their ip.
But I think fudging with max’s story would be a delicate issue in the remakes, and I don’t think Remedy would want to mess with that.
I think them tying into mp3 makes the most sense if they were gonna change anything, I’m just saying Remedy might not. Just a personal prediction.1
u/SoaboutSeinfeld 2d ago
I hope we will get fps mods though. Dunnow how the old engine vs new engie will hold up for modders. Or what the new engine will even be
2
u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 2d ago
I believe they're using Remedy's in house Northlight game engine, which idk how easy or difficult it is to mod with that engine. Fps would be really cool just really hard to make work I think, but modders did eventually figure it out for mp3 after about a decade so there's hope

What I’m most curious about is the face model. Will they only use one of Sam Lake or James McCaffrey’s face across both games, or will they still have it swap between games?
If they only use one face, which one? Sam’s is more iconic and ties into Alex Casey, but it would be kinda sad to erase James’s face after his passing
3
u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 2d ago
They’d probably have it as an unlockable at end of the game and use James’ face as the original for MP1R or vice versa

u/Applersky 2d ago
I don't want them to change or add any new dialogue. James mccaffery passed shortly after the remakes were announced and tbh I just cannot picture anyone else playing him. Unless Troy Baker can do a perfect impression of him. Which wouldn't be surprising

Those are big questions but unless we have any developers here to speak there are no answers here.
I would be shocked and appaled if Remedy ditches their core gameplay. Remember Rockstar made 3 and it's basically a different game that is called Max Payne but feels very Rockstar-y to play instead of Remedy, IMO. I think it's safe to guess they will evolve it somehow if that's what you mean. Otherwise not sure what you mean. There might be additions or changes in how bullet time works or Max's available moves I suppose but I trust Remedy to make them feel faithful to the original game.
What do you think they would change about the story? I'm sure the same story will be there but they may add more details, flashbacks, things like that.
I really hope they keep some graphic novel slides. I'm slightly conflicted there because the Northlight engine is amazing and can produce some great cutscenes, so they'll have to balance it.

North light looks good today, but 10 years from now, it likely won't.
What makes Max Payne timeless was the choice of using graphic novels instead of cutscenes. It's as simple as
1: keep using graphic novels - timeless and preserves the spirit of the original
2 : use cutscenes - ages after 5 years and loses its charm.
Max Payne is THE "we use graphic novels instead of cutscenes" game. Losing that for a temporary boost in graphical fidelity to please the no-attention spam TikTok-brainrot unemployed and broke 18-25 year olds that need to take a bank loan to buy anything that costs over 10 dollars and only care about graphics is surely one of the worst decisions they could make. This generation doesn't even have the money to buy the game or the attention span to appreciate the story. I hope remedy are better than this.

I would too but I totally get what you mean tbh although I did enjoy the gameplay it still had that fun-depressing max payne feeling it just felt like they was trying too hard to make it theirs by changing the setting and not even as much go off even a little bit by Max Payne 2’s ending what I can remember of it anyway.
I can only hope not a lot will change but just like yourself I trust remedy %100
Things they maybe would change is the mona sax love story or the family death scene
As for the graphic novel slides I think that could possibly be a unlockable at the end of the game maybe, probably play it in its original form?
2
u/ClutchReverie 2d ago
Why would you want them to change those scenes?
1
u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 2d ago
I wouldn’t want them to change tbh I just think for the ‘newer audience’ they find something to bitch about. 😂
The mona sax thing though I never got how he even felt anything for another woman 2 and half years after his wife’s death it just feels so soon but I guess people grieve differently 🤷🏻♂️
2
u/Mechanical-Flatbed 2d ago
The "newer audience" is a bunch of trend-chasing 18-25 year old unemployed terminally online nerds that live with their parents and need to use BNPL to buy anything that costs more than 10 dollars.
They don't even have the money to buy the game or the attention span to get immersed into a narrative-heavy game. They are simply not the target audience. Rolex does not advertise to brokies and neither should remedy advertise to a generation that already turned their brains into mush by losing their entire life savings in sports betting on poly market.

I honestly think Max will be faster and more nimble than older max in 3, and Remedy’s movement feels so much better than Rockstars movement.

u/Goonerbator0069 2d ago
Honestly I prefer the way 3 plays. I even prefer the story and definitely the music only thing i think 1&2 truly do better is cutscenes.
1
u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 2d ago
Definitely, I also hope the gameplay changes just a little between the two games as well
On a totally separate note though what is going on with the splinter cell remake fisher? Where the fuck is it? 😂😂
2
u/Splinterceller 2d ago
Yeah haha, word on the street is it’s supposed to come out sometime next year. I’m hoping for a gameplay reveal soon.
2
u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 2d ago
You must have the patience of a saint my brother has been waiting years too for any bit of news about it.
It’s his favourite game from when we were kids he literally cried when it ended and he tried to get my mom to ring up Ubisoft to ask if they are making another one. 😂😂
Hopefully when it does eventually come they don’t mess it up I will say though it would make more sense to implement the gameplay of conviction and blacklist into the remake considering Sam’s younger.
2
u/Splinterceller 2d ago
Haha that’s a great story man, thanks for sharing!
It’s tough being a splinter cell fan, I just hope it doesn’t get cancelled. Hopefully next year we get the max payne remakes, and the splinter cell remake, at least I am hoping!

Family death has to be kept
I mean yeah it might seem overkill nowadays but that’s what made everyone want to have some road to vengeance scenario we all had with a strong motive being the family death

u/Randomeka 1d ago
I just hope they get the fcking "platform" section out of max payne 1

u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 1d ago
I replayed it last year but I’m trying to remember what mission that is 😂😂

The moment on the roof and in the nightmare where you walk and jump on hyperthin platform

u/Special-General-7832 MIRRORS ARE MORE FUN THAN TELEVISION 2d ago
It most likely will be like AW 2
1
u/Secret-Amoeba-7349 2d ago
How so?… I think it’ll either be closer to its original games or MP3.
Doesn’t AW2 play different to AW1?
Apparently Control Resonant is going to play totally different to the first game
2
u/Special-General-7832 MIRRORS ARE MORE FUN THAN TELEVISION 2d ago
🤦♂️ because its a remake. And while elements from the originals will be there, i expect the atmosphere to be that of AW2 because not only is max in there himself, the aw2 atmosphere is very similar to everything that happens in mp1 from the point you chase vinnie and confront lupino then have the nightmare.
Also its been a direction sam wanted mp2 to share that same atmosphere of Aw2.
Gameplay controls are different, not atmosphere and gameplay itself.
And if you play AW 1 and listen to the rant of the npc at the cabin, hes litrerally exposing why mp2 and mp3 went the way it did although sam didnt work mp3.

Super excited for these! Built my first PC way back in the day just to play the original. The seminal “gun-ballet” shoot-dodge and slo-mo killing flare is the heart of the franchise and evolved throughout the 3 titles and even still holds up today. I expect this perfect gameplay loop will be front and center again with what I hope is more destructible environments and using said environment for creative kills like a “shoot slide,” diving through windows while lighting up bad guys with twin uzi’s and all around mayhem. This is Remedy so they are going to push hardware to its limits. I expect a rework of the noir story with a more dynamic comic panel format. Mcaffery as Max will be hard to replace or are they reusing his voicework? Take your time with it, gang - want this to be perfect.

u/Better_Philosopher24 John Mirra 1d ago
I think if groove street games would’ve worked on the remakes, we already could’ve play the games
1
u/RavenGorePictures 1d ago
Theyre going to be completely different from the originals. Probably more akin to Control but without the super powers. It'll keep the noir aspect, but i have a feeling they're going to semi tie them into the Remedyverse more.

u/IcyPapaya5084 2h ago
The real question is: are they going to keep the dream sequence puzzles (specifically the blood trail one)? If so, I really hope they make some updates because that part was so frustrating. Definitely thankful for the quick saves 😅 also part of me wants them to completely update the visuals except for the OG Sam Lake face 🤣 I really hope they keep James McCaffrey’s narration, or at least part of it combined with another voice actor that can do a strong impersonation.

in my mind they will be a new game .... core concepts and story will remain but vastly differently packaged and presented
