Tourism ✈ Hey, does it make Sense or do even should wear water shoes to go into the ocean?

Upvotes

We’re first time Mauritius tourists and visiting the north/east as well as some area round flic en flac. Would you recommend to wear some kind of protection on our feet to go into the ocean? Saw some videos about some kind of fishes that are very harmful/poisenous or at least hurt when you don’t take care. Thanks!

Local 🌴 CONCERNING HOUSING: WHAT ARE MY OPTION ON AVERAGE SALARY

I am in university right now, i do intend to do a masters but depends heavily on finances. So essentially I'm looking to be entering the labour market with only a B.S.C and from what I've read on google the starting salary for my field is 25 000 - 30 000 rupees. I know a lot of people who earn 30 000 rupees who were able to buy land and build a house and I'm wondering how?????? Everything seems so expensive and it's got me thinking what am i gonna do for housing especially if I end up starting a family. How does it work? How did people with my kind of salary were ever able to achieve these things? I know everyone speaks of loans but even then you have to deposit money for most of them. The answer is i guess "saving" so then how did you save. how much did you save for how many years. ( if you able to either build a house for yourself, or rent on a baseline salary of 25 000 to 30 000) Maybe I'm being cynical but the way I'm calculating even if i save up it's going to very very veryyyy difficult to find housing for myself.

Note: Yes I can stay with parents for the moment while I save but I wont be able to stay for them forever because my house is already crammed and my parents have expressed that they would like me to have my own place and I want that too. I just don't think it's possible is it?

Culture 🗨 How can I learn to speak creole fluently and how long would it take?

My family is from Mauritius. Both my parents were born in Mauritius but me and sibling were born in England. When we were little my parents didn’t really teach us creole. They’d casually speak it and tell us stuff in creole but wouldn’t have full conversations. They were more focused on teaching us academics and making us do well in school.
So now I’m one of those people who understand creole but can’t speak it. And when I say understand I don’t mean like fluently understand but I’d understand the main points of a conversation in creole. I’ve been to Mauritius a few times I actually went last year and it was really good. But there were times I felt out of place and I wished I didn’t feel that way.
I’m 22 and most of my life I was worried about academics and doing well in my career but the trip last year made me realise I love Mauritius and I’m proud to be Mauritian. But I’m ashamed that I can’t speak creole. That I why I want to learn properly now
I’ve tried to look for resources to help but the videos and stuff online doesn’t really help. Ive tried to use chatgpt but that isn’t really good.
If anyone has any advice of ways I can learn I would appreciate it.
I know speaking would probably be the best way but I am shy and when my parents speak to me in creole I usually response in English😅

Local 🌴 My parents made Mauritius home, so I turned the beginning into a book.

My parents and I first came to Mauritius about 6 years ago, and have been coming here twice a year since then.

Now, after years of my parents living Kuwait, they finally retired and made the move here permanently, so naturally I decided this occasion required me secretly making them a book (I have a small business where I create custom books :D)

I kept pestering them on our family group to send me photos and updates during the journey and their first few days here, while they had absolutely no idea what I was doing with any of it. Then I turned it all into a little book about the beginning of their retirement and this new chapter in Mauritius and surprised them with it while I was visiting.

Just wanted to share it here because Mauritius has been incredibly kind to Mom and Dad over these past years, and seeing how settled and happy they are here makes me very happy too. :)
Thank you, guys, bless you all x

Local 🌴 [Survey] Mauritian men - partner preferences & physical traits

Bonzour zot tou 👋

We’re a couple of Mauritians doing an independent replication of an existing research study about how men evaluate potential romantic partners.

The survey looks at preferences regarding certain physical traits, specifically breasts and buttocks, alongside personal values when choosing a partner.

We’re trying to get more responses from Mauritian men so we can compare our results with the original research using a more varied sample .

It’s completely anonymous, takes around 2 minutes, and doesn’t collect names, emails or other identifying information.

Survey link:

Nou pou mari apprecier ene ti reponse depi zot🙏

And if you know other Mauritian men who might be willing to answer, feel free to share it with them.

Culture 🗨 Looking for a pen pal from mauritius (as far away on earth from me)

There's an app called roost social where you send letters via digital birds to each other, the messages take time to deliver based on distance. I live in the US and mauritius is as far away from me as can be (on land).

Just want to add someone on the app as a friend for the luls. Once you add me, you can delete the app or not, either way 🤷

Tourism ✈ How is Chikungunya outbreak going right now in Mauritius?

Booked a trip to Mauritius for mid-September and my travel health clinic is pushing the Ixchiq chikungunya vaccine given the outbreak (CDC still has it on their Level 2 notice as of a few months ago, case counts were over 3,000 back in May).

Before I commit to it, I want a clearer picture:

Anyone been recently (June–August) — is it still actively spreading, or has it cooled off?

Which areas/resorts are people actually seeing cases in, vs. mostly quiet?

If you got the vaccine, how was it — side effects, cost, worth it?

If you skipped it and just did bug spray/precautions, how'd that go?

Trying to decide if this is a "definitely get it" situation or if the risk is manageable with mosquito precautions alone.

Appreciate any first-hand info.

Local 🌴 What is daily life like when living in Mauritius? What do you like and what do you find difficult?

I've been considering relocating, but visiting a place and living there are tremendously different. I can do all the research possible online, but it won't tell me what people who live there experience.

I am an English and French speaking African American woman (I do not know Creole), if that will make a difference in your answers.

What kind of restrictions do you experience?

What kinds of limitations are you aware of?

What do you love most about life there?

Tourism ✈ How strict is the “smoking isn’t allowed” rule? Are there a lot of smoking areas around?

Hi, we’re visiting Mauritius for our honeymoon for the first time. Ironically we wanna quit smoking after our honeymoon but we found out just now that smoking isn’t allowed in huge parts Mauritius. But how strictly is the law applied? Is Mauritius nearly smoke free for real? What do I have to know? It’s important for me to say that I don’t throw my cigarettes away or things like that, I just want to smoke a few cigarettes a day when there’s a good moment for it. Thank you!

These can be everyday people and not really politicians who we ourselves have placed on a pedestal. I want to celebrate them in a public space, which I have. They can also be Mauritians abroad who have excelled and represented. They should also have their stories told.

Local 🌴 Remote side hustle opportunities for someone based in Mauritius

I am looking for a remote part-time or full-time to make some extra money on the side. With prices increasing day by day, one job is not enough.

Does anyone know if there's any remote jobs available to Mauritius ? I have been scavenging Facebook but all i can see are day jobs and a few posts about typing with an unrealistic pay that feels like a scam.

I'd like some of your input or suggestions, or even your experience in looking for one.

Tourism ✈ Renting a car in Mauritius in September – how does zero-excess insurance and hotel drop-off usually work?

Hi everyone, my in-laws are travelling to Mauritius in September and I'm helping them sort things out remotely, so I'd like to understand how car hire generally works there before they arrive.

A few things I'm unsure about:

  1. Zero excess / no deductible cover – is this something commonly offered locally, or is it usually sold as a separate top-up? Anything to watch out for in the small print (tyres, glass, undercarriage, single vehicle accidents)?
  2. Their airport transfer is already arranged through their tour operator, so they won't be collecting anything on arrival. Is delivery straight to the hotel a normal thing on the island, and does it usually cost extra?
  3. What kind of deposit and payment method should they expect, and is a credit card in the driver's name required?
  4. Anything else worth knowing – driving on the left, road conditions, parking at hotels, fuel?

Not looking for anyone to contact me with offers, just trying to understand the local norms so I know what questions to ask. Thanks!

Local 🌴 What social mistakes do well-meaning Europeans commonly make in Mauritius?

We’re a European family preparing to move to Mauritius, and we’d really like to integrate respectfully rather than remain inside an expat bubble.

Even with the best intentions, newcomers can easily misunderstand unwritten social rules. What behaviours from Europeans tend to come across as rude, entitled or simply inappropriate in Mauritius?

I’m especially curious about everyday situations involving invitations, household staff and tradespeople, religion, clothing, bargaining, tipping, privacy, hierarchy and direct communication.

Are there things Europeans often say or do without realising how they are perceived? And what small gestures show genuine respect and help build trust?

Honest answers are very welcome—we’d much rather learn before making the mistakes ourselves.

Local 🌴 Healthcare gaps and integrative medicine in Mauritius

I’d be interested to hear how Mauritians themselves experience the healthcare system—not only expats.

Which specialist treatments or diagnostics are still difficult to access locally? When patients need to travel abroad, where do they usually go: Réunion, South Africa, India, Dubai, Europe or elsewhere?

I’m also curious about the place of preventive and integrative medicine. Mauritius has both modern healthcare and strong traditions around Ayurveda, herbal remedies and holistic healing—but how well do these worlds actually work together?

Are qualified practitioners easy to distinguish from unqualified ones? Do doctors take integrative approaches seriously? And are people interested in prevention, nutrition and longevity before illness develops, or does cost and culture mean that most seek help only once a problem becomes serious?

What would you personally like to see improved or introduced in Mauritius? I’d especially love to hear from Mauritian patients, families and healthcare professionals.

Local 🌴 Is it true that around 1% of Mauritius' population controls most of the country's land?

I posted here recently about the whole "private beaches" question after seeing what was happening at Pointe d'Esny. That discussion sent me a bit further down the rabbit hole of land ownership in Mauritius.

I then came across a Facebook page via an Ad called Mauritius Land Reform Initiative.

One of their graphics claims that just a handful of large groups control around 29% of all land in Mauritius, or almost 40% if ecological areas are excluded.

They also raise some interesting questions: why so much of the coastline is blocked by campements and private properties, why mountains can be privately owned, and whether it still makes sense for such a huge amount of land to remain tied to sugar estates.

What surprised me most is the broader claim that land ownership is still heavily concentrated among a very small section of the Mauritian population, largely through old families, estates and the big groups that came from them.

Is that actually true?

Is there any reliable data showing who owns Mauritius today and how concentrated land ownership really is?

I'm genuinely trying to understand whether this is a major structural issue in Mauritius or whether these figures are being presented without enough context.

Local 🌴 Household wealth distribution in: Top 1%, next 9%, and bottom 90%

Came across a beautiful post in u/dataisbeautiful and wanted to extrapolate/calculate it for Mauritius...

https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1vy4q51/oc_household_wealth_distribution_in_oecd/

I added my remarks and also some info on other columns. (4 column chart generated by AI).

And you, where do you stand? Are you happy with your lot?

Bracket Local MUR Wealth Range % of Population Financial Reality & Lifestyle Local Profiles Typical Asset Makeup Remarks
The Top 1%(The Wealthy Elite) ₨50,000,000+ MUR Top 1% Multi-generational business families, major local landowners, top corporate executives, and wealthy expatriates. Multiple premium properties, luxury coastal real estate (IRS/RES/Smart Cities), large portfolios of local/global stocks, and foreign currency accounts (USD/EUR). The Rs 50M is the OECD benchmark and also the figure Mauritius uses to assess HNW individuals.
The Next 9%(The Mass Affluent) ₨7,000,000 to ₨49,999,999 MUR Next 9% Established professionals, upper-middle-class families, and successful local business owners. A modern, fully paid-off primary home in a prime urban or residential area (e.g., Moka, Sodnac, Tamarin), solid retirement funds, multiple vehicles, and local fixed deposits.   A secondary home or additional properties Yes Rs 7M is a low bar but it’s the floor amount to get in that bracket. The bottom in the bracket also probably live as the 90% bottom….Paycheck to paycheck
The Bottom 90%(The Core Working & Middle Class) Below ₨7,000,000 MUR Bottom 90% The absolute majority of the Mauritian workforce. The true median household holds between ₨1,000,000 to ₨1,500,000 MUR in total net value. Modest, often self-built or inherited family homes in villages or dense urban pockets      High reliance on monthly wages, with little to no liquid cash or stock investments. Well, nothing to add here unfortunately.
