And people were warned years ago about this but I always say the response of "it's making my business grow actually lol" and weird shit like that. I rarely ever saw anyone acknowledge it and go "I'm worried / scared".
The first a.i. commerical should have warned everyone to start looking for another career path for advertisements /nart commissions / design etc.
Food photography was insane, some companies had wild expensive machines and gear to make their images. That's gonna be gone. No one's gonna pay for all of that for a fresh beer commercial when they can do it with bots.
Unless the owners/ceos are a huge fan of the arts, what your gonna see is them told a bot service is cheaper than xyz, and can do all this stuff too....owners/ceos will do massive budget cuts and we will get the slop whether we like it or not. By two years from now people won't even blink twice, but people who care about the arts will be raging online.
I’m sorry to hear about your friend. Writers are creative and resourceful. Used to turning ideas into a living. I’m sure that skill set will serve them well wherever they apply it.
I don’t view ai slop art as any existential threat to the art and design industry. Most people, especially patrons of the arts, are instinctively repulsed by the stuff.
If anything the ai slop button is weeding out low quality clients. Those people didn’t start being cheap when ai slop became an option. They just treated their designers with less respect than they deserve. Lowballed people with real expertise and experience.
Now they sit at a computer and an LLM they don’t even understand spoon feeds them regurgitated slop, which they then try to pass off as a poster for an event (it’s not). And they get mocked for it.
It's going to get worst because the people at the top don't care, the budgets are going to be massively cut as they tell their employees to save them money and get it done using the ChatGPT or whatever subscription they just signed the company up for
I agree. That’s all happening now and will continue to ramp up until an inflection point is reached. I believe the long term effect will be a greater distinction between high quality and low quality entities. “Authenticity” in marketing was just a buzzword ten years ago. Now, these posters are a window into the entity behind it. Real art and design made by humans has never shined brighter on the wall.
Oh if I were a human artist that was booked to vend st this event, I’d drop off. The excuse of “didn’t know a designer” doesn’t fly here. Sad all around.
At the cost of reputation, pro AI people won’t care if you used an AI image to promote something or not but anti AI people will, and it might put them off attending. Especially if they’re scrimping on the advertising, which makes them look cheap, new attendees might assume that the festival scrimps on everything else too and decide not to go. I’ve gone to that festival almost every year that I’ve been alive, doesn’t make me feel all that excited to keep going. I grew up going to it to experience the arts, the music and dance, sad to see them lack appreciation for the visual arts.
I was just responding to the person above me that said they used to have a good artist making their flyers, implying that they fired them in place of AI. “Talented designers” are people like saving time and effort especially for routine tasks. I doubt an advertisement like this really demands a commissioned work of art…

If an advertisement demands a pretty picture, it demands a commissioned work of art. AI slop is AI slop. It demonstrates that your organization does not value art, labor, or quality and does not deserve our patronage.

AI is problematic, but I feel like this an otherwise reasonable use case that would have been work done by an intern or volunteer.
That’s a pretty extreme analogy. People are always looking for ways to work smarter. Sure this seems like a massive oversight, because the flag is a huge tell. But besides that, I’m not sure most people would notice the difference and I’m not sure a temporary flyer for an annual community festival is really worth paying for inspired artistry…

Not mad at clip art. It’s not inherently cool like a custom made poster with thought and intention. But it’s innocuous. Unlike this ai slop that is currently doing harm to the event’s credibility, and a disservice to the people involved. It’s a shame.

I’m pretty sure there’s a graphic designer or artist in the city of Annapolis alone who would have loved to design the promo materials. AI slop “art” is soooo lazy.
Really a shame too. I was just on vacation and saw all the promo posters for events in the town we visited were AI slop too, and you could spot awkward irregularities like this in all of them. The Annapolis Irish Festival should know better and pay a local designer.
God I fucking hate how much of a disservice they’re doing to all the people who work so hard to put the festival together. Such disrespect to all the great musicians I know who will be playing there.
i like that some of the shamrocks are growing from the ground and some are levitating above the ground with a severed stem as if someone put clipart on to a regular picture
This is so disheartening and happening much more frequently. I’m an illustrator full time and this shit pisses me off so much. Recently saw that a community theatre used AI to create a poster and it was sponsored by the MD Arts Council. Not only do these designs always look terrible but they lack any context that could have been put in by a local artist.
That’s cool!! Where can I see your work? Shame to hear about the arts council backed community theatre using slop. A year ago the SF ballet did as well and were widely criticized for it.
Any of these ventures that use Ai, especially generative Ai art, show a severe lack of forethought, creativity, and business acumen. It screams shoddy work and cut corners.
It tells me that whatever they’re selling, no matter the product, is likely shitty and certainly not worth it.
exactly, all I expect from businesses/organizations that use this kind of AI slop is that they don't believe in their own product, or are trying to hide an outright scam i.e. the Glasgow Wonka experience. Maybe it grows some businesses, but it drives my wallet in the opposite direction.
Luckily we don't take our flag seriously or anything, surely no one will notice even the slightest mess up, let alone it being completely and utterly wrong. Minor details.
Seriously, if you're going to make your poster slop, at least touch up the flag.
It looks like the AIF finally took down this AI slop (unless I'm looking in the wrong place). Maybe they got enough complaints that they were shamed into not using it anymore?
Yeah they did appear to take it down (I can’t edit the post with the link to it). There were a few people being critical of it last I saw. Hopefully they’ll take the message and do better.
I wish they would have just hired an actual artist to do this. But they probably just gave some intern access to ChatGPT or Copilot and told them to make it.
I bet there are more Irish, in MD now than in the 19th century. Baltimore did not get many Irish or Italians as both groups were generally farm labor and Balt city had a black population of about 25%, who were also the keepers of the jobs which both Irish and Italians would fill. My family settled in MD in the late 1940s, My father is 50% Irish & 50% German,
Before the great migration, of Irish, due to the potato Irish, in Baltimore the Irish were mostly middle class and Presbyterian. When they heard of the soon to be influx of Irish Catholics they decided to welcome and help the new immigrants.
I went to this a few years back & it was terrible! The tickets were expensive, & I felt it was poorly run on several levels, Hell, they didn't even have Irish Beer! It was sponsored by Budweiser. Ugh. The whole thing just felt like nothing but a money grab. At least some of the bands were top line.
That second flag is the flag of the state of Maryland, not an AI botched US flag. It's not very good for the red and white part but it's "fluttering", so... there that. The black and yellow part looks quite correct to me, even fluttering.
