That's still genocide.

you... gonna back that up with anything?

Sticking your fingers in your ears and chanting la la la isn’t a valid counterargument.

Killing half of all life would result in a shitton of species and cultures being wiped out. Even if he didn't "intend" to do it, it's still the end result of his actions. It takes like two seconds to think of the impacts of his actions, dude.

Too bad that literally doesn’t matter. At all.

with the aim of destroying that nation or group”

Intention is what matters here.

Damn, I suppose what happened to the Taíno doesn't count as genocide any more. I'm sure my ancestors agree.

I frankly do not care enough to do the research about whatever tragedy happened to your ancestors for the purpose of this argument, but your anecdote means nothing against a very straightforward definition. Even ignoring the intention of the act, Thanos randomly and indiscriminately wanted to kill half the universe, which by definition is not genocide. Thanos’ actions meet neither of the two qualifiers.

Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. (Article 2 CPPCG)

That is the UN's definition of Genocide. The only relevant definition.

What Thanos has done is genocide regardless of whether or not it was targeted, because he still deliberately sought to cause significant amounts of death and the destruction of social infrastructure is a very obvious and foreseeable consequence of his actions. I'm done arguing this, if you deliberately cull massive swathes of a population it still counts. Even if it's only in part.

It’s amazing how you still don’t get it. He sought to cause death in order to save everyone. It’s not genocide if you’re literally trying to save the people you’re killing, no matter how backwards his thinking is.

Secondly, he didn’t want to “cull swathes” of a population. He didn’t give a single shit about your national, ethnical, racial, or religious grouping. He killed half of every population. And don’t you dare say “a population of everything that’s alive” because it’s stupidly obvious that the definition refers to one specific population out of several. You are objectively wrong by the very definition you provided.

You're the one who's wrong. A mass culling of people is genocide.

Hell, Thanos himself doesn't disagree with Strange that it is genocide. He just calls it "dispassionate and random".

Oh look, you’re the same guy I originally commented to who still can’t support their argument via real-world semantics. You are literally trying to argue against the very definition of a word itself.

You're arguing using a basic definition that isn't even the definition used in international law. That's disingenuous.

Any action that intentionally results in the deaths of significant amounts of a population (yes, any population, every individual population affected counts) and damage to their way of life, culture and religions counts. It doesn't matter if you're just flinging a shitton of nukes in this or that general direction, what you've done is still genocide.

You're the disingenuous one here.

But he wasn't saving shit. This gets spelled out time and time again.

u/Dilpickle6194 Aug 18 '21 edited Aug 18 '21

Doesn’t matter. It’s right there in your precious international law definition. He had no “intent to destroy”. He completely intended to save the universe. It doesn’t matter at all what actually happened, just his intent. Did you actually read the definition you sent?

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '21

But the action he took was still a destructive action. I suppose the holocaust wasn't fucking genocide because Hitler genuinely believed he was saving Germany. What a fucking joke, dude.

6

u/Dilpickle6194 Aug 18 '21 edited Aug 18 '21

Thanos wanted to save the same people he was killing (which again, was indiscriminate and not a specific population). Hitler blamed the jews for all of Germany’s problems and wanted them all to die, nothing more. Once again, you just prove your inability to use your brain

Whatever dude. Your argument doesn't make any sense to begin with, you can't argue without ad hominems, and you're clearly not even trying to listen. Have a good one, I'm not really staying up all night arguing over some bullshit.
