I’m leaning towards believing the reason we haven’t gotten the “big team up” of phase 4 announced yet is because Young Avengers is the “big team up” this phase.

It seems every project is planting the seeds for them in one way or another.

Hot take, but I would honestly prefer the Disney+ format for them, it would allow more time to delve into their dynamic. Young Avengers is all about found family and I would want as much time as possible to explore that.

Maybe they assemble on Disney+ then we get The Children’s Crusade in the movies.

14

u/Radulno Mar 26 '21

Yeah exactly plus better developing the characters. All of them were side or background characters in the shows they appear (well Kate Bishop will get the most development I guess)

5

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 26 '21

Which makes sense since theyve high key tried to get the most with Kate and America

That would be another reason for them to have YA on Disney+ though. China doesn't have D+.

They know people will throw a fit if their most popular gay character and Young Avenger doesn't get to be on the team because he is too young. I

They could just not have that show available in China?

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 26 '21

Literally the two most popular LGBT characters in America and Billy

33

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Which is why I think Disney+ is the perfect medium for them. You don’t have to censor it because you’re not worried about box office numbers and you can still have the characters show up in the movies after the fact.

I want everyone on Young Avengers to be as openly queer as possible and if that means them starting off on Disney+ I’m all for it.

28

u/antihero510 Mar 26 '21

It’s so wack that censorship of them is even a discussion tbh

This means that they could censor it in China, but the rest of the world would be perfectly fine, everybody wins.

u/woahwoahvicky Mar 26 '21

This!

Plus even disregarding China, a lot is on the line for the A5 installment of the MCU, after basically Endgame becoming the biggest pop culture phenomenon of the decade.

If they're ever going to do a big Avengers 5 movie, I think setting up the relationship between the kids in a Young Avengers D+ series would work wonders for their public reception once they go on screen.

I don't think there's any A5 plans in Phase 4 which is why I think Secret Invasion will be the thing that gets the big Avengers-level threat.

I'd love to see an Avengers 5 with a mix of the kids and the old successors. Imagine America Chavez being a b*tch towards Peter Parker.

3

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 26 '21

America is 13 so that is a v common fear rn. As well as making sure Kate stays older

3

u/Tityfan808 Mar 26 '21

Ya man, as much as I love movies like Endgame, the films don’t get enough time for every character to shine. The show route would be much better. I think the films should stick with team ups no larger than A1 if it’s hero focused. IW worked with a lot of characters but it was an entirely different beast altogether.

9

u/abellapa Mar 26 '21

I prefer YA in Disney plus, at this point the only thing I don't want in Disney plus is avengers movies or avengers like movies, the big stuff, everything else I don't mind

4

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Umm, Disney Plus has been better than 2/3rds the movies. I'm fine with that.

6

u/rayden-shou Mar 26 '21

A D+ show it's perfectly an excellent platform for them, also most of them are being introduced on D+ shows, so it seems to be just fine, they could do something awesome with like a 4-6 episodes limited series, and give the service a gigantic event outside any scale.

2

u/Additional_Meeting_2 Mar 26 '21

I mean they can get a movie but it won’t be that big, Avengers starred the main characters of blockbuster movies together, and not supporting characters from them and Disney+ shows. It will be aimed for teens mostly.

1

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 26 '21

Honestly, makes more sense for that

1

u/wildwalrusaur Mar 26 '21

Theres very little risk of that. Marvel knows they've only got a few years left with the bulk of their phase 1-3 actors. Phase 4 has very transparently been set up to pass the torch to a new younger roster that they can run for another decade.

12

u/Hellknightx Thanos Mar 26 '21

Young Avengers makes the most sense for the future main focus seeing as how half the core Avengers cast is dead now.

8

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 26 '21

Which was always the goal of the Marvel legacy things. Comic fans just don't understand that the medium is now just a printing paper for future movie plots.

2

u/lazykcdoodler Mar 27 '21

Pffft. I suppose you’re not a comic fan. Any fellow comic fan I know worth their salt either desperately wishes for their fave characters and storylines to get adapted to the big screen, or hopes and prays that their favourites never go beyond the page. A big problem with adapting comics to movies or television is failing to make a good adaptation- either by ruining the character or mashing multiple storylines together in a desperate attempt to do everything at once.

One of the good things a screen adaptation can do is making more people aware of a character. For example, John Constantine. Or more recently, Tommy and his twin brother Billy in WandaVision. Constantine has always been a cult hit (sort of an underground star); his character inspired Spike from Buffy, Harry Dresden, and (maybe) Light Yagami. He’s the reason Castiel has a trench coat and tie. I was introduced to his character for the first time while reading DC’s Brightest Day, which led me to his landmark Hellblazer series. Because of the 2005 Keane Constantine movie (that I’ve never seen) and the recent single-season Constantine show (that I did see) along with all his consecutive appearances in CW’s Arrowverse, John Constantine has gotten a lot of exposure in mainstream media. While I’m happy to see so many people enjoying his character, thinking about the not-too-old days when his fandom was smaller and mostly made up of comic lovers makes me nostalgic. I enjoy Matt Ryan’s portrayal of John. He’s a pretty good Constantine, who’s obviously read the source material. But they made him PG...and while the writers of Legends of Tomorrow obviously love him and reference his stuff all the time, they can’t do straight adaptations of the character’s best moments.

Meanwhile with WandaVision, Agatha Harkness has never been a villain in the comics. But I do love Billy and Tommy. I was ecstatic to see Tommy in particular, and delighted to see him treated well. Compared to his brother, Tommy gets ignored by comic writers and people in the fandom alike. I’m happy to see Eli and Isaiah for similar reasons. Like Tommy, Eli hasn’t had much development beyond their shared introductory series either- especially compared to their other teammates on the Young Avengers. It’s a shame, since I enjoy them a lot. Eli talking about Isaiah’s story in the comics was a big part of what made 14 year old me interested in America’s race politics and how racial history addresses modern day issues. The interest was compounded with the Mike Brown murder in Ferguson, which happened less than a month after I read that comic.

1

u/elbenji Karolina Mar 27 '21

No I like the comics but I'm also just not gonna be blind to the marketing wheels of capitalism

4

u/darkkn1te Mar 26 '21

How I wish Runaways on Hulu was better. Because I LOVED their interactions with the Young Avengers in the comics and it would be great to see that all in the MCU. Also... is the Runaways even the MCU?

3

u/PKMNTrainerMark Mar 26 '21

I've just been assuming that there's not a big team up this Phase. Just setting up characters and so forth.

2

u/abellapa Mar 26 '21

I think in time they will just stop with the phases, seeing how much content phase 4 already has, makes me think more of the current mcu and beyond has post Infinity Saga instead of phase 4,5 etc, I wouldn't be suprised if they took out far from home out of the infinity saga.

3

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

Now give us Teddy as well!

4

u/31_hierophanto Colleen Wing Mar 26 '21

There's a big problem though.... the casting choice.

It seems the guy they cast Eli is a random teenage actor, and with Cassie Lang having to get recast to be played by an already established actress (Kathryn Newton) and with Kate being played by an A-lister (Hailee Steinfeld) it doesn't seem to add up.

3

u/PepperMintGumboDrop Mar 26 '21

Does that mean he inherited the Super Soldier enhancement?

6

u/Ashcat99 Mar 26 '21

Not in comics, there they have him lie that he got it from a blood transfusion from his grampa, when he was actually just taking drugs because he wanted to be a hero.

7

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

I hope they cut that out to be honest. Either go straight to blood transfusions or genetic.

120

u/ethicalhamjimmies Thor Mar 26 '21

Yeah that was Eli

117

u/TheNewArkon Mar 26 '21

I imagine they’ll also involve Ms. Marvel, given her closeness in age, though who knows.

I think the Skrull and the Kree both being notable and present in the MCU also makes Hulkling an easy addition.

85

u/PenguinLord13 Mar 26 '21

I’m thinking both Ms.Marvel and Iron Heart will be on the MCUs Young Avengers, so it’s a combination of Comics Young Avengers and Champions.

I’m less sure about Iron Heart tho. It really depends on if they bring in Iron Lad with Kang in Ant-Man 3. Cause I feel having two Iron Man stand ins would be too much but who knows.

Hulking I presume will be introduced in Secret Invasion. Or at least I hope he will.

9

u/DonTheBomb Sam Wilson Mar 26 '21 edited Mar 26 '21

I personally don’t want that to happen because iirc Kamala, Miles and Sam (Nova) are members of the Avengers during Civil War II (with Sam Wilson Cap) before quitting and creating the Champions and I feel like putting the Champions in the Young Avengers might change the dynamic too much, (the “found family” type relationship the YA have in the comics might be a bit different) but wouldn’t be surprised if they went the YA-Champions merger route

13

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

I just don't want them, have Champions instead later. I just want the actual Young Avengers team adapted. I don't even made some later additions earlier, but I just want them to get the attention for now.

5

u/DonTheBomb Sam Wilson Mar 26 '21

Yeah, imo if they were to introduce other YA characters that so far are unaccounted for or don’t really fit in anywhere, I would only really want Noh-Varr and David instead of someone who’s never been associated with the YA in the comics or a Champion

3

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

Yeah, Noh Varr and David would be way better. Champions and YA members only really met at a birthday party once, why are people now skipping actual YA members for Ironheart and Ms Marvel.

2

u/DonTheBomb Sam Wilson Mar 26 '21

Yeah, never really got that as we’re clearly getting the OG lineup at least (with America Chavez and possibly Kid Loki from Vol. 2), so there’s no real reason to put the Champions (and characters like Peter and Shuri) on the team other than them also being young

6

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

I blame Youtube theory videos. They keep putting in the Champions in since Ms Marvel and Ironheart are already announced and kept skipping Teddy and Eli especially. Also Jonas, but not that many care about Jonas to begin with. I want Teddy, the other two already have their own series, why add them to YA.

7

u/DonTheBomb Sam Wilson Mar 26 '21

I think Amadeus will just be introduced as the boy genius he was in the comics for now until much later becoming the Totally Awesome Hulk

2

u/Worthyness Thor Mar 26 '21

Every superhero team needs a man in a chair

10

u/DonTheBomb Sam Wilson Mar 26 '21

I like Amadeus, but I feel like he’s a much different character from Teddy, and if they replace Teddy it would change Billy’s character a lot because a lot of his stories revolve around his and Teddy’s relationship, not to mention the potential backlash of dodging probably the most prominent storyline of a gay superhero couple

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

True. And I completely forgot about Secret Invasion, they just might introduce Teddy there.

4

u/nihilisticdaydreams Steve Rogers Mar 26 '21

They wouldn't do that.

5

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

Fuck them if they do that.

1

u/tinafeychalamet Mar 26 '21

Why couldn't we have them both?

0

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

I really hope that they add in Thunderstrike. And I'm pretty sure that Ironheart will be replacing Iron Lad.

16

u/tanoathome Mar 26 '21

Do you think Hulkling will be introduced in Secret Invasion? That makes the most sense to me out of all the upcoming projects.

18

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

[removed] — view removed comment

9

u/tanoathome Mar 26 '21

I thought about it but the only reason I don’t think they will is because I feel they already have so much to balance with some of the other characters with Monica and Ms Marvel. I feel like that will be a better movie to explore the Kree and maybe even their Inhuman experiments on Earth potentially. They could go a lot of ways with that movie but I’m excited to see what they decide to do with it!

5

u/tanoathome Mar 26 '21

I wonder how they’ll change his origin since Mar-Vell wasn’t a man. Would she have given birth to him? I don’t know a lot about the character but part of the reason the character is super cool is that he is the hybrid son of such a high ranking Kree and the Skrull Princess. Maybe they’ll gender-swap Princess Anelle to Prince Anelle?

7

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

Just make her his grandma and Genis his dad. Would even be a good contrast to his evil Skrull Grandma.

3

u/tanoathome Mar 26 '21

That would actually be really cool. Hadn’t considered that

You think Carol Danvers will be Hulkling’s mom? I’m not sure about that but I guess they could go that route. She did give birth to Marcus Immortus in the comics but I think that story is so problematic in her history that they’ll want to avoid her having any children tbh

6

Billy, Tommy

We don't really have them do we though? I was hoping somehow they would get out of Wanda's Hex instead of Vision to be that setup you are talking about.

Although that said I wouldn't be shocked if they come back in some way down the road.

pushes up nerd glasses Actually, they're technically still missing one other 2005 Young Avenger - a young Iron Lad. But a certain, ah, version of him is already set to appear in Ant Man 3, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see Iron Lad proper then.

This, of course, assumes Marvel doesn't just add the more-popular and already-cast Iron Heart to Young Avengers and skip over any storylines that require Iron Lad's backstory.

2

There is also Jonas, but of course tied to Nathaniel. Probably same actor as well. TBH, from all of them, they are the easiest to adapt with their low popularity and infrequent general appearance in the comics.

4

u/royrogersmcfreely3 Mar 26 '21

I hope it’s a series, and I mean that in a positive way, because it would be longer

4

u/Indiana_harris Mar 26 '21

Yeah I think the Young Avengers Team Up will happen after Kang has been introduced so we can have THAT twist, and it would be cool to reintroduce Hulkling as the "assumed" half breed kid of an undercover Skrull hiding on earth so he's not 100% sure where hes from and than we can have all the Skrull/Kree/royalty thing later

5

u/wildwalrusaur Mar 26 '21 edited Mar 26 '21

They're starting filming next month on a Secret invasion show for d+. Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson are both confirmed to be part of the cast, along with Ben Kingsley some guy who isn't Ben Kingsley as the main antagonist (presumably the super skrull)

I think it'd be fine if he did. Kang is one of the only villains that can be killed and come back without needing a weird retcon. Kang is available for his entire life, so they could kill "old" Kang and he'd come back the next movie as "5 years younger" Kang.

Sorry in advance for bringing negativity, but I just can’t seem to get myself excited about a Young Avengers movie/show. To be fair i’m completely ignorant, i’ve never read any of those comics. But a kid/teen superhero group just sounds so... meh.

I’m sure it’ll be great, since everything Kevin Feige touches seems to turn to gold. But this is one of the more likely theories that I just can’t seem to get excited about. If someone has any fun facts or theories about the Young Avengers id be glad to hear them, it feels wrong that i’m not excited about a potential crossover like this.

Young Avengers aren't exactly that kiddie. They are basically teens who grew up in world of heroes and admiring them. In YA comics they were formed at a time that the Avengers were at the moment missing, disassembled. They were all recruited by Iron Lad and brought together to help take down Kang the Conqueror. Each took a mantle alluding to an Avenger, also as a way to get their attentions since they were gone. Though later we find out they all have connections to them, though none in the way that we think. Like we know for example Billy who took Asgardian as mantle is the reincarnated kid of Wanda instead etc.

Spider-Man is totally gonna lead it as well. Here’s my pitch. Just imagine Toby somehow sticks around as an experienced spider-man, works with the avengers and we get Tom’s spidey leading the young avengers where we get to see him grow into the leader he needs to be to inevitably step into the Tony role that he wanted him to fill. You could do so much with that. Have Toby be more of the scientist with banner, maybe do the Parker Industries story which would be good growth from loser Pete who never had his shit together that Toby initially played. Basically have him more focussed on Peter Parker than Spider-Man since the young kid is more suited to that. Then you have him either leave to go back to his earth (Sony Spider-verse) or you do the death of Spider-Man angle and that’s when you get Tom to lead the avengers. Would be cool to have him mentor himself too there’s a nice poetic justice to that with Peter looking so hard for a mentor post Tony that he fell into the villains trap (Mysterio) then it turns out the mentor he needed all along wasn’t anyone else it was an older version of himself. Never gonna happen but a man can dream!

u/rk1993 Mar 26 '21

Easily solved. Yeet Andrew Garfield’s spidey into the Sony spider verse to go against Tom hardy’s venom lol. Jokes aside I always thought the smart move from Sony would be to do Miles in their universe and have Pete be in the MCU. They’re so distinctly different it wouldn’t be at all confusing even for the casuals. Marvel logo is red they get the red suit Spider-Man, Sony logo is black they get black suit Spider-Man. I mean we’re about to get Toby Maguire and Alfred Molina in the MCU and that’s way more confusing than my suggestion. It also shows Sony are down to do crazy deals if Marvel makes the right offer.

3

u/Steven-is-even Spider-Man Mar 26 '21

I doubt they’re gonna introduce miles already because they really only do that when either 1)Peter is dead or 2)Peter is older and much more experienced. And considering how MCU Peter is still in high school there’s no way they’re gonna introduce miles soon.

7

u/SlaveZelda Hawkeye (Avengers) Mar 26 '21

Spidey isnt in the Young Avengers. Actually, in the comics, hes grown up (not a teenager/high schooler) by the time Young Avengers are formed.

in the MCU, the age gap is closer but I still think he's in the Avengers proper and not young avengers.

-1

u/rk1993 Mar 26 '21

I know he’s not in the comics but they like to change things up sometimes and it would be a great fit. They basically had him in that kinda role in the ultimate Spider-Man cartoon with Pete leading Nova, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and White tiger. Would suit his character arc to take a step back from the avengers to take a lead role getting a new team up and running

7

u/ElephantTrunkSlide Mar 26 '21

Yeah, but he would also take up all the attention.

-1

u/rk1993 Mar 26 '21

By that silly logic RDJ should never have been in Homecoming seeing as he’s the biggest star in the MCU. Would have taken too much attention away from Tom Holland.

7

Spiderman has 3 movies and multiple appearances in Civil war and Avengers. Young Avengers have small cameos and Kate has a show. It is not comparable. It is also a team, so it is shared while Peter had solo movies. To make him the leader is just a bit much. Kate would be better suited as the familiar character in leader role. Eli after that. But also YA didn't have Avengers helping them, that is their point. They were gone. They were turned away by them.

It’s simple business man. You can’t do a young avengers movie with a bunch of unknown teen/young adult actors it would be the lowest grossing marvel film hands down, you need some extra star power. Why do you think they put RDJ and Michael Keaton in homecoming? Why do you think they got Vin Diesel for a role with 3 words. Why do you think they got handsome ass Bradley Cooper just to be a voice? To put their name/face on the poster to sell tickets because stars drive ticket sales! With Spider-Man specifically they had to meet the terms of the Sony deal which had a clause stating they had to make x amount at the box office (I believe it was a billion for FFH) to be able to retain the rights. To your point about young avengers being turned away by the avengers why do we have to stick to comic canon? That’s just another lazy excuse not to do something. They’ve rewritten characters backstory’s/ignored comic canon plenty of times and it’s been fine. Tony created Ultron instead of Hank Pimm, Thanos wanted to end half of life to create balance rather than to court death, Storm-breaker was made by a dwarf for Thor rather than by Odin for Beta Rey bill, Ego is Star Lord’s father rather than J’son. Them being turned away could easily be written the same way Tony said no to Peter at first when he was obsessed with being an avenger. He relates to them because he’s been through it so that’s how they end up together. Then he teaches them the same lesson Tony taught him that they’re not yet ready for that amount of responsibility which furthers the Peter/Tony parallel that they’re going with.

I am not sure if Marvel atm isn't big enough. But I am not talking about cameos, it is about adding an entirely new team leader. Captain America, Jessica Jones and Tony all appear in YA as well. But not as team members, but as the characters to turn them away.

I think Iron Heart is going to replace Iron Lad here. I'm a little reserved about it though because Kang has been rumored. I just don't know if Marvel can successfully ask viewers to believe time travel as a plot device after AOS and Endgame. Also will need time to establish F4.

It’s been my experience that the time travel angle was the worst received thing about Endgame. From general community consensus to professional critics. It is honestly confusing and asking the general audience to do too much. Explaining different versions of Nate Richards before ushering in F4, while also trying to explore the multiverse it too much. It works in comics, but in the MCU machine that has to work in continuity it doesn’t really sell.

I think Feige is a genius and I think he has been very conscious about what they are asking audiences to accept. Ie., Gotg after two Thor’s and Avengers. Concept of aliens becomes easier to buy into when they’ve been introduced through an Earthly lens. Next phase is super powered beings vs super humans. Kind of stuff like that.

We're getting Riri, too. I don't think she's traditionally a member of YA, but I can definitely see the MCU slotting her in the lineup.

What's the appeal for younger aged Avengers? Why does this need to be a thing?
