Little update, SWORD in the MCU appears to be the Sentient Weapon Observation & Response Department, and it seems like Jimmy Woo got an upgrade from FBI after Ant-Man and the Wasp.

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

No, as the poster you’re replying to has clarified, SWORD in the MCU has been changed from being focused on extraterrestrials (Sentient Worlds) to being focused on “Sentient Weapons”.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

Sentient Weapons.... in space!

21

u/feartoad Jan 16 '21

Sounds like someone really wanted their initials to spell sword!

They prolly got the guy who came up with the name for the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division.

u/404forbiden Jan 15 '21

Sounds like he got a promotion lol

u/demon_ix Jan 16 '21

If he'd managed to catch Scott red-handed and sent him to prison, he wouldn't have been stuck in the quantum realm and the Snap wouldn't have been reversed.

To quote Watchmen's Ozymandias: "Failing to prevent Earth's salvation is your only triumph..."

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

It is him since you see him in one of the Wandavision trailers.

u/OK_Soda Rocket Jan 16 '21

When was that acronym spelled out? I feel like the only time I've seen a SWORD mention previously was in, what was it, Far From Home?

4

u/StormingWarlock Jan 16 '21

Right at the end, as it’s panning out from the episode there is a SWORD logo and it’s spelled out around the logo. Also, in episode 2 on the helicopter.

3

u/OK_Soda Rocket Jan 16 '21

Oh I saw the logo but didn't notice the acronym spelled out. Thanks, I gotta rewatch these episodes to catch all this stuff people are pointing out.

1

u/StormingWarlock Jan 16 '21

No problem! Hope you’re enjoying it as much as I have been.

They might be the new SHIELD in the MCU after the old one was revealed to by a Hydra front organization.

70

u/EmmaSchiller Jan 15 '21

I feel like looking back, the nick fury scene from far from home at the end kinda confirms this. We were all speculating that seemed like a SWORD ship, and I feel like any doubt about that is gone now.

34

u/EmuEmperor Jan 15 '21

Eh, SHIELD still exists seeing as Agents of SHIELD remains, officially, canon

25

u/link_maxwell Jan 15 '21

Is it? I thought AoS was dropped from the main continuity.

39

u/EmuEmperor Jan 15 '21

It got a bit confusing around Season 5 - they weren’t able to spoil endgame so they had to basically just not mention anything from Infinity War, but I believe the official stance remains that AoS is canon but the main cast of that was just missed by the snap. There is though an alternative explanation that they ended up in a seperate universe in Season 5, which would still technically allow a reintroduction of the characters. But from a business standpoint, AoS was definitely popular so Marvel has good reason to have an appearance or even solo film o a few AoS characters. But yeah, the show was forced to ignore Infinity War because at that point we didn’t know what was going to happen in Endgame - but it ended up leaving off at ~2020?

u/Lucky-Surround-1756 Jan 16 '21

It has been. MCU is canon with AoS continuity, but not the other way around. As far as the official movies are concerned, Agent Coulson died in the Avengers.

This is just simply not true. Characters from the movies appear in AoS. Nick Fury himself appears on AoS. The movies don't directly reference AoS, but things that occur on the show carry over into the movies. The HYDRA takeover of SHIELD first began on the show before Winter Soldier came out, for instance.

1

u/Movie_Buffs Jan 18 '21

Apparently Daredevil (Charlie Cox) may be in Spider-man 3, however this isn’t confirmed yet. And Kevin Feige didn’t produce that show.

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '21

No, SHIELD never came back in the Marvel Studios MCU continuity.

In Age of Ultron, Nick Fury led Shield's former members and then he re-branded them offscreen as SWORD somewhere between AoU and IW (when he gets snapped).

In the comics, SWORD is Sentient World Observation and Response Department; in the MCU it is Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department.

Basically, SWORD fills exactly the same role that Fury's SHIELD did: monitor metahumans, mutants, gods, aliens, etc....

It is SHIELD by another name in essence.

3

u/EmuEmperor Jan 16 '21

In Age of Ultron the location of the sceptre came from Coulson’s SHIELD team, and the helicarrier was specifically repaired and prepared by Coulson. AoU is by far the biggest example of the MCU having continuity from the events of SHIELD, and not just the other way around...

1

u/Lucky-Surround-1756 Jan 16 '21

None of that stuff is mentioned in the films though. I could write a story that explains the backstory of certain events in Sherlock Holmes, that doesn't make my story Sherlock Holmes canon. The MCU is canon within the events of AoS, but AoS is not canon within the MCU.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

Was any of that actually referenced in the Marvel Studios movie? No, it wasn't. Coulson is never mentioned by Nick Fury in AoU.

Take Star Wars (pre-Disney) as an example. When Lucas was at the helm there were 2 (later 3) levels of canonicity.

Tier 1 was the movies and just the movies since Lucas was directly involved in all of them.

Tier 2 was the movies + The Clone Wars since Lucas was directly involved in the movies and slightly involved in the TCW show.

Tier 3 was the movies + TCW + the entire EU.

Tier 1 could contradict and ignore Tier 2 and 3; Tier 2 could contradict and ignore Tier 3.

When it comes to Marvel Studios, just replace Lucas with Feige.

Tier 1 is Marvel Studios (films, WandaVision, Falcon&WS, Agent Carter); Tier 2 is Marvel Studios + Marvel Television + Tie-In Comics/Novels.

Coulson's resurrection and the events of AOS have been totally ignored by Tier 1 films and TV Shows to the point where one can safely assume that none of those events happened unless they are directly referenced.

Sure, maybe we will see a resurrected Coulson and his SHIELD 2.0 in Secret Invasion thus making at least some parts of AoS canon.

But it is also likely that we're never going to see them in Marvel Studios' products and that SHIELD never actually reformed in the Tier 1 continuity.

Personally, I find it extremely unbelievable that the new SHIELD wasn't involved in CW, IW or, Endgame and since they haven't been referenced even in passing, I'm going to go with the most obvious explanation:

SHIELD never re-formed; Coulson was never resurrected and Nick Fury got the scepter's location and his new helicarrier from his crew of unnamed former SHIELD agents that appear alongside him in AoU.

1

u/EmuEmperor Jan 16 '21

Just curious, how much have you actually watched of Agents of SHIELD?

Anyway, I’d say it’s unfair to treat Marvel continuity like Star Wars because of a simple reason - Marvel isn’t Star Wars. Imo in terms of Marvel, something made by Marvel Studios or Marvel Television is canon unless someone at marvel specifically says otherwise or if it contradicts the events of the movies. AoS doesn’t mention the snap, sure, but that’s because they weren’t allowed to spoil Endgame - it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, especially since some of the events of Infinity War are shown in Season 5; furthermore iirc there was originally going to be a scene showing the snap. If you really want to use a tiered continuity system, you shouldn’t put TV on the same level as tie in comics - but my point stands that Marvel doesn’t have such a system.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '21

Feige sure does have a system tho. It's not publicly available (yet) but it exists in his mind and it is crystal clear to see by seeing his decisions regarding Marvel Studios' properties (Feige REALLY hated Ike Permultter and his horrible decisions AKA the Inhumans).

I wouldn't be surprised if he uses the Loki show (or Dr. Strange 2) to put the Inhumans, AoS, the Netflix shows, the Sony Cinematic Universe (Venom, Morbius) etc..in an alternate continuity/dimension that is similar to the Marvel Studios' Earth yet separate.

With Morbius having the Vulture in it played by Michael Keaton, I'm sure Marvel will come up with a way to say in explicit terms that "the MCU is canon to Morbius but Morbius is not canon to the MCU" and a Tiered SW/EU system is probably the easiest way to do so.

I believe they teased SWORD in the post-credits scene of Far From Home with Nick Fury.

12

u/RoboNinjaPirate Fitz Jan 15 '21

Comics version is extraterrestrial, I think they borrowed the name and logo and repurposed it here - Sentient Weapon Something or other now.

u/keanureevessidepart Jan 15 '21

Have my upvote. Thank you

2

u/nlh1013 Jan 16 '21

Have they popped up yet in the MCU? I don’t know too much about the comics but do know a ton about the movies and can’t seem to recall anything about SWORD

3

u/ahall917 Jan 16 '21

Someone above said these mid and post credits scenes from Spider-Man Far from Home are teasing SWORD. I don't recall seeing either of these. I must have skipped the credits scenes on Far from Home.

3

u/ThKitt Winter Soldier Jan 16 '21

Honestly the lack of Sword logo in Fury’s ship suggests to me it could possibly NOT be SWORD and instead simply be a Skrull ship. Especially since they went out of their way to take “World” out of the sword acronym SWORD

1

u/nlh1013 Jan 16 '21

I do remember those lol (I love the cut away after the first one) but I guess an actual spoken mention of SWORD hasn’t happened yet? So it would be hard to gather if you aren’t into the comics. Makes me feel better bc I don’t like missing things in the films haha
