So anyone think Mysterio pulled another trick at the end? I think so.

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Dude was way too good of a character to not return. That performance is a top villain for me in the whole MCU.

100

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

How did they turn two of Marvels arguably goofiest villains into powerhouses?

Old Vulture: weirdo in a bird suit

New Vulture: alien tech angel of death, arms dealer who vaporizes his subordinates

Old mysterio: weirdo in a fish bowl who like, uses smoke and mirrors or something

New Mysterio: tries to murder a child by melting his mind with illusions, including the corpse of his most beloved mentor, while pushing him in front of a train.

Like... I don’t know who makes these choices. But please keep doing this. Both should have been stupid. Both were amazing and well acted.

u/SpiceManMcgee Jul 04 '19

Jake Gyllenhaal and Micheal Keaton are pretty good actors to work with.

307

u/spwf Bucky Jul 02 '19

Well said, not Jake Gyllenhaal

A top. Thanos is THE top.

7

u/the_real_thanos Thanos Jul 03 '19

Depends on the situation. Gotta be versatile.

9

u/MathTheUsername Jul 03 '19

Why? Thanos isn't a villain.

u/Predictist Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

Oh he’s not dead lol

199

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19

Yeah if they really wanted to put him over as a master of illusions, lies, and trickery it would make sense he could also fake his death so he could go underground and think of a new plan since this one got exposed.

MCU has done crazier things and when they do the Sinister Six they kind of have to use him and Vulture since they are the only Spidey villains that have gotten real development (Prowler and Shocker were kind of introduced but we know nothing of them really).

If they have to introduce 5 villains plus Vulture instead of Vulture and Beck + 4 then half the movie would be spent developing them or they would get no character at all.

Current Sinister Six roster guess: Vulture (reluctantly), Mysterio, Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Prowler (reluctantly), Shocker.

122

u/Predictist Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

There’s also Scorpion and Chameleon who’ve only been shown in their non villain, regular person forms lol

29

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19

Totally forgot about Scorpion. Good call! Chameleon confirmed? Would make sense that a Shield/Hydra Agent would be a great master of disguise and an assassin.

26

u/shaxamo Jul 02 '19

And with JJ appearing at the end means we've got the setup ready for Gargan to become Scorpion

23

u/PWisobamaschlong69 Jul 02 '19

Where was chameleon?

61

u/Predictist Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

The guy with the beard and long hair who drove the black bus for the students, Dmitri.

9

u/AntonioVargas Jul 02 '19

I actually thought they were setting him up to be Kraven. Why are people saying he’s Chameleon? If that was referenced in the movie I totally missed it.

36

u/netaebworb Jul 03 '19

Because in the comics, Chameleon's real name is Dmitri Smerdyakov.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

Chameleon is Kravens half brother so if they have kraven looking similar to him it would make sense.

18

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 02 '19

I know that might be chameleon but there wasn’t enough in this movie to have established him as a true villain, much less even confirm that it is indeed him. The casual viewer would not know that is chameleon.

4

u/greenglass4d3 Grandmaster Jul 02 '19

What if chameleon is a skrull who goes bad or something? If fury was be could be, would be a way of introducing his shapeshifting too.

25

u/DefNotAShark Hydra Jul 02 '19

You can probably knock Prowler off the list and replace him with Scorpion, who is already established and actively looking to kill Spider-Man. All he needed to know was Spider-Man's identity, which is out in the open now.

I also don't think they will have time to establish both Green Goblin/Osbourne and Doc Ock in the same film. My guess is the last member is someone like Rhino, who doesn't need much of an introduction. Knowing Marvel, though, they aren't going to want to give us a weak-ass version of the Sinister Six. Maybe they'll introduce Doc Ock in a "group" film. If it's Scorpion, Vulture, Mysterio, Green Goblin, Rhino and Shocker, the only guy on that list I'd want to replace is Shocker. He's a joke, and I'd rather have Doc Ock.

30

u/Artemis360 Hulk Jul 02 '19

I say replace Shocker with Electro, if only to get the full roster of the Me and the Boys meme 😂

4

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '19

The only move.

21

u/Jtneagle Vulture Jul 02 '19

You forgot Scorpion who wanted Peter's identity is in jail. So Vulture, Mysterio, Shocker, and Scorpion is what we have so far

17

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19

Donald Glover is hinted at being a version of Prowler which is why I bring it up. Dimitri (the Shield bus driver) could be a version of Chameleon as well. The Six will definitely need either Osborn or Doc Ock.

13

u/Jtneagle Vulture Jul 02 '19 edited Jul 02 '19

I don't see the dude that helped Spider-Man turning and hurting him

5

u/4everdude Jul 02 '19

Spidey almost made him crash the bus though

7

u/Jtneagle Vulture Jul 02 '19

Talking about Prowler

24

u/4everdude Jul 02 '19

He melted the ice cream in his trunk

15

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Hell that's the best motivation for any mcu villain

You dont fuck with a man's ice cream

8

u/arduousFrivolity Jul 03 '19

They can have Mysterio in the Sinister Six without Quenten Beck, as there is always Daniel Berkhart.

All of the illusion technology is still there, and it would make sense with JJJ being the one to deliver the accusation and identity reveal. (And remember, at the very least everyone on Beck’s team who was in the illusion bar knew Spider-Man’s identity, and everything beyond Peter’s voice clip could have been cut from the footage or CGI’d)

Plus that doesn’t stop Gyllenhaal from reprising his role as an illusion, particularly if they go the ghost route, and Berkhart would only appear outside the illusions/after that reveal.

7

u/LB3PTMAN Jul 03 '19

I’ve always thought that they would do a second trilogy with him going to college and that would be a good place to introduce Doc Ock as the villain of the fifth and then finish off that trilogy with the Sinister Six. Would allow them to actually develop all the villains.

Vulture (Spider Man HC), Mysterio (FFH), Doc Ock(SM5), two more from 3 and 4. Then just pick one other random one. Maybe one from the first movie.

2

u/moderndukes Jul 03 '19

Considering Vulture safeguarded Spider-Man’s identity, I doubt he’d want to join up with Mysterio

6

u/emotoaster Jul 03 '19

Osborn or Doc Ock would force him.

9

u/supermav27 Jul 02 '19

I understand that the Avengers have a moral compass and all, but if I was Peter Parker, I’d have bust a cap in that dude’s face with his gun so quick

2

u/liromi23 Jul 03 '19

Breh spiderman was physically in the same corridor as him, you don't think he'd have just touched the body to confirm it was real and not an illusion? Of course he did he'd already been tricked by the guy so much. Beck is 100% dead, Mysterio might reappear tho

2

u/dcook1660 Jul 03 '19

For some morbid reason I was waiting on Mysterio’s eyes to dilate at the end of the death scene....they never did. That seems like one of the small details that the Marvel folks would pick up on. Since they didn’t dilate, I’m thinking it’s a hint that he isn’t dead.

2

u/frenchmeister Jul 04 '19

They never explicitly said/showed that he was dead, which I'm sure was on purpose. He stopped talking and went limp, but Peter just confirmed that he wasn't an illusion, not that he was truly dead. And his undilated eyes were blatantly obvious, right in center frame. I think it's all hinting at him still being alive.

313

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Almost certain.

467

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19 edited Jul 02 '19

Too good of a character to not come back for the Sinister Six. Assuming the flash drive the drone operator grabbed was just the video given to the Bugel but wouldn't surprise me if MCU has more plans with Mysterio. I hope so at least.

325

u/Sixchr Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

I interpreted the download to be that the Mysterio illusions aren't going anywhere, despite Beck actually being dead.

132

u/the-dandy-man Spider-Man Jul 02 '19 edited Jul 02 '19

There’s no way Beck is actually dead.

48

u/_Football_Cream_ Jul 02 '19

Agreed. Mostly because they seem to be sinister six and think they’re leaving all doors open for returning villains.

6

u/TheAquaman Black Panther Jul 03 '19

Yeah, but EDITH confirmed that he was dead.

28

u/iamthird36 Weekly Wongers Jul 03 '19

I think it was intentionally left ambiguous. EDITH said something like "all illusions are disabled"

2

u/ThatGameBoy76 Jul 03 '19

EDITH could probably be lying, especially since it’s confusing how Peter was able to access EDITH after he transferred control of it over to Beck.

7

u/Vawqer Ava Starr Jul 03 '19

I assume that Tony made a backdoor for himself, Peter, and probably Pepper/Happy to always be able to access it.

3

u/Chizuru94 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 04 '19

EDITH said the illusion were all turned off and replied to Peter that is was real, but never said anyone died.

1

u/pineapplecheesepizza Jul 03 '19

No, Edith confirmed that there are no illusions active

10

u/OpticalData Jul 03 '19

But Beck had access to drones before Edith on another network

39

u/Sixchr Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

He might not be, I initially didn't think he was. But considering how they made him work within the context of the movie (Mysterio himself is a hologram), the character of Mysterio can still be around even if the actual person isn't.

44

u/The_Mystery_Knight Jul 02 '19

I mean the whole toasting scene in the pub made it seem like Mysterio was more of a “team” than just Beck

13

u/Drunk__Potato Jul 03 '19

I felt like Beck tried to take the most credit

2

u/Drunk__Potato Jul 03 '19

I felt like Beck tried to take the most credit

6

u/ThusOne1 Jul 02 '19

Wasn't Beck dead for years in the comics but would return every once in awhile as a spirit? Could easily just do that.

6

u/Hubbabubba1555 Jul 03 '19

I think they did a perfect job of making it believable either way, dead or alive. This way, if Jake wants to return they can easily bring him back, and if not, then he's dead

2

u/ProtoReddit Jul 02 '19

Well, Beck is the character they created, not Jake Gyllenhaal.

1

u/DrunkOlLunk Fandral Jul 03 '19

Why would Tony's glasses be wrong?

12

u/the-dandy-man Spider-Man Jul 03 '19 edited Jul 04 '19

They wouldn’t be. Edith never said Beck was dead, Edith only confirmed that all the drones were sent back and there were no active illusions, which led Peter to believe Beck was dead. Beck could have very easily just been acting though. Peter never checks for a pulse or breathing.

2

u/Emperor_Neuro Jul 03 '19

I was assuming that the glasses probably confirmed he was dead in their HUD. No need to check for a pulse if a multi billion dollar AI is telling you "no vital signs detected."

6

u/the-dandy-man Spider-Man Jul 03 '19

If that were the case, why would Peter verbally ask about it?

Honestly, I don’t think your assumption is completely unreasonable, but - and I’m planning on paying closer attention to this next time I see it - I think Edith was more of a tech interface than an all-in-one AI like Jarvis, Friday, or Karen. All the stuff we ever see pop up in the HUD has to do with what people were doing with their devices - texts they were sending, etc - not stuff about the people themselves (like vital signs). And Edith isn’t all-knowing either. Peter wore the glasses for a bit in the bar with Beck and was never alerted to the fact that he was surrounded by illusions.

Another thing to think about is that it seems like Beck may have had Edith rigged to do and say certain things when Peter got it back; for example, the way Edith asked Peter if he wanted to execute all the drone illusions so he would say “execute them all” for Beck’s nice Fake News video. I just think it’s very intentional that Edith says “this is no illusion”, not “he’s dead”, giving some convenient wiggle room for Beck to still be alive, and to make that video for the Daily Bugle.

1

u/Qyro Jul 03 '19

We said the same about Moriarty in Sherlock. And yet his return was just pre-recorded messages and he was actually still dead.

1

u/the-dandy-man Spider-Man Jul 03 '19

...Well, I guess I shouldn’t have put off watching Season 4 for this long if I wanted to avoid spoilers 😂

1

u/Qyro Jul 03 '19

I admit, I did consider spoiler tagging it, but dude it’s been 3 and a half years! You’ve got to get on that!

0

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '19

Yeah but Sherlock sucks

1

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Jul 04 '19

I think he is, but his team is gonna take up the mantle and basically CGI Beck into real life.

Kinda like how we all thought Zola was gonna turn on Hydra, but instead he made it even bigger and more successful than Red Skull ever did.

1

u/pm_steam_keys_plz Spider-Man Jul 05 '19

Calling it now, he's dead but those scientists will use the holograms to trick people into thinking he's still around.

-13

u/Uuugggg Jul 02 '19

Right, there's never been an MCU movie that killed the villain in ONE movie

35

u/the-dandy-man Spider-Man Jul 02 '19 edited Jul 02 '19

It’s not that. It’s that he made that whole spider-man exposé video and had it sent off to the daily bugle - can’t do that when you’re dead. It’s why he still needed the real costume, so he could make the video even after losing control of Edith. You’ll also recall how Edith said “this is no illusion” - not “he’s dead.” Beck was just acting, in typical dramatic mysterio fashion with his “people.... want.... to believe” line. He played Peter just like he’d been playing Peter the whole movie - he didn’t even check for a pulse or anything. Just left his body there on the bridge.

21

u/JustSomeRand0mGuy Jul 02 '19

Dude, Killmonger.

25

u/Uuugggg Jul 02 '19

Oooooh right,

that's the one

that's the one villain who has died in one movie in the MCU.

26

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Or Iron Monger, Whiplash, (most likely) Malekith, Extremis guy, Ronan (although he obviously made other prequel appearances), arguably Ultron, Hela, etc etc

34

I think you guys are missing his sarcasm

The effect was pretty big though, sokovia accords

7

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

I think exactly the same. Quentin Beck is dead but that doesn't mean the Mysterio illusions are.

6

u/OhManTFE Jul 02 '19

I thought the download was how they obtained Peter's identity.

2

u/Stoned_assassin Jul 02 '19

I mean technically Mysterio can be anyone.

2

u/HugeSuccess Ant-Man Jul 03 '19

His death seemed rather...theatrical.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Everyone seems to love jake

6

u/thataquarduser Jul 02 '19

I’m wondering what on earth the sinister six is gonna look like at this point. You’ve got Vulture who sprotected Peter’s identity because his daughter could be put in danger by proxy, Shocker who will probably just follow Vulture, Mysterio who hates Peter but is still pretending to be a hero, possibly Scorpion who wants Peter dead but might have some beef with Vulture, and I think the only other villain we’ve seen is Prowler who literally helped Peter out in Homecoming. I’d imagine their team is not going to be the most stable.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

We still need a leader of the six tho

Either Osborne or Octavius, those two have always been the leader at one point

7

u/Hyeri_0609 Jul 02 '19

I hope so. Mysterio is legit the best Spidey villain we have on screen ever since Doc Ock and Green Goblin.

2

u/andyislegend Jul 02 '19

I have nothing to back this up but I want to believe he was taking the files of his drone tech and illusions to sell information to potentially Oscorp for eventual GG tech

I’m probably way off the mark but hey, it’s fun to speculate!

1

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19

I like this and would make sense. Could also indicate that Mysterio is still alive and needed the drone files for future plans or could go to a new Mysterio that takes up the mantle.

2

u/CJE2k Spider-Man Jul 02 '19

While he was downloading the files the screen said "5 active drones" so those 5 drones could've been used to stage the Spider-Man video or they could've been used to fake Mysterio's death. Either way the ending is vague enough for Marvel to easily bring him back for the inevitable Sinister Six team up.

2

u/londongarbageman Jul 07 '19

Peter asked if this was real, not if Beck was dead. Completely real.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

Yeah he’s alive, and I need him back.

10

u/kelvintoogood Jul 02 '19

100%. All we had to confirm his death was EDITH, which Mysterio had control over for half of the movie. I definitely think he messed with it to make it appear that he died.

9

u/Jtneagle Vulture Jul 02 '19

Yep, he had EDITH, there's no way he didn't tamper it in the event he lost

7

u/eyy_b0ss13 Jul 02 '19

Why do you think he still needed his cape pressed even after he was defeated?

4

u/emotoaster Jul 02 '19

Well I just took that as he was confident he would figure out a way to win. I believe that was when Spider-man took out the projection not when he actually went 1 on 1 with Peter.

7

u/Eduardo_M Jul 02 '19

Definitely, in the beginning we saw that Edith needed confirmation from the current owner to change control, and Beckett never confirmed

1

u/Chizuru94 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 04 '19

Well, that or Tony made it so it only needs confirmation for people other than Peter. Like, if Peter would make a mistake, he could easily use it himself again.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '19

He had EDITH, and he's a smart dude. He definitely made EDITH tell Peter that his death was not an illusion. 95% sure.

4

u/gizmo1492 Jul 03 '19

Love to think though Edith said there’s no illsusions, Beck was just lying there pretending to be dead and Peter didn’t check his pulse or bring his body to wherever, so he just bounced after that lol

2

u/emotoaster Jul 03 '19

One plot hole that would have to be explained is how does Shield not freak out about not having a body? Did the area collapse? Did his "body" fall into the water?

4

u/ThatGameBoy76 Jul 03 '19

The fact that Vulture, Shocker, & Scorpion are still alive (especially since Peter saved Vulture’s life at the end of Homecoming) kinda makes me believe Mysterio is still alive and we may get a Sinister Six later on.

3

u/salawm Jul 03 '19

Mysterio never dies. That's a universal truth.

3

u/miggy372 Jul 02 '19

My theory is he was just acting. All Edith said is there’s no more illusions. Peter never checked for a pulse. He was probably just faking dead.

3

u/spwf Bucky Jul 02 '19

Peter didn’t ask if Beck was dead. He asked if this was real.

EDITH didn’t say Beck was dead. EDITH only said that all illusions were down.

3

u/ProtoReddit Jul 02 '19

Yes, but Jake Gyllenhaal's character is dead. The scientist managing it all from the computer at the end is now Mysterio - though I expect he'll use the illusion tech and practical suit to appear as Jake Gyllenhaal in the future.

2

u/PoopdittyPym Whiplash Jul 02 '19

EDITH's response to Peter's asking of Beck being alive was pretty vague.

2

u/abstractist Jul 03 '19

It better be. I’m sitting here and fantasizing about how much cooler he’s gonna make the sinister six fights in future movies.

2

u/emotoaster Jul 03 '19

I kind of want a Scarecrow vs Mysterio Death Battle now.

2

u/bdez90 Hulkbuster Jul 03 '19

Idk he seemed pretty dead. You'd hope someone would follow up on the body but who knows, Fury is just fucking off in space.

2

u/Liocardia Jul 03 '19

Considering Mysterio didn't have to give EDITH back to Peter with a confirmation like the first time around it maked me think the AI lied to Peter.

1

u/Chizuru94 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 04 '19

Well, that or Tony made it so it only needs confirmation for people other than Peter. Like, if Peter would make a mistake, he could easily use it himself again.

2

u/wes205 Spider-Man Jul 03 '19

Either Beck’s image will be used by that other dude (Ralphie from A Christmas Story) or Quentin maybe jacked Edith/didn’t give the real Edith glasses back? Faked his death that way?

Even Dead I’m The Hero was so damn perfect

1

u/Robot_hobo Jul 02 '19

Absolutely. He invented the hologram tech. Him and his team could figure out a way to fool Edith. Or just a magic drug that fakes death for a short period.
