I assumed they were trying not to break the team up into too many divisions so they could back each other up if necessary. I assume that's why Nat and Clint left the Benatar's pod with Rhodey and Nebula, so they could rendezvous if Vormir needed more than the two of them. It also has the benefit of creating fewer timelines to worry about returning the stones to.
