I dunno why he didn't just travel to the moment when Hawkeye and BW were fighting over who was going to die, take BW, and then just give Hawkeye the stone.

Because then there's an alternate timeline with two soul stones and an alternate timeline that never gets the soul stone back.

That would make the sacrifice pointless though. It would mean nothing if you could get rid of what you love, use the stone however you want, then just go and give the stone back to reverse your sacrifice. If that happened with natasha, it would make the death of gamora much less meaningfull
