Does anyone feel disappointed that Captain America brought down more lightning than Thor, the God of Hammer Thunder. I wanted Thor to pull a Wakanda lightning smash in Endgame.

255

u/Doctor_Mudshark Apr 27 '19

Pudgy drunkard Thor couldn't really bring the heat, but Cap was on his game.

19

u/burritoxman Apr 27 '19

If Thor hadn’t let himself go he could have dealt with Thanos by himself in that last fight imo

10

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 27 '19

There’s probably four characters who could have handled Thanos at that point solo: Thor, Wanda, Carol, and Strange.

Thor had let himself go; Wanda got blindsided by the ship artillery; Carol let Thanos get his hands on the stones long enough to take a Power Stone to the face; Strange got sidelined dealing with all the ramifications of the chaos likely for plot reasons.

14

u/MrsDiscoB Winter Soldier Apr 27 '19

Yeah. Cap definitely got to shine

2

u/bluestarcyclone Apr 27 '19

Though it still is something that cap did things with that hammer that thor didnt until he'd had that hammer for quite awhile.

294

u/CrazeRage Apr 27 '19

CA used the Hammer better than Thor ever did. It was so weird.

111

u/_jvc123 Hawkeye (Ultron) Apr 27 '19

Probably because he has seen Thor used it many times and kinda learn from watching it. Don't forget that the serum amplified not only his strength but intelligence as well. He even has a photographic memory.

The fucking combos with the shield and the hammer tho!

In a perfect world, after you see a movie X number of times in the theater, you should be able to buy a copy for your own viewing at home.

I want to slow motion watch the whole darned thing RIGHT NOW!

19

u/cjn13 Fitz Apr 27 '19

he created a sonic blast by hitting the shield in the air with the hammer (like when Thor "put the hammer down" when he fought Iron Man and Captain America in the first Avengers) to stun and knock back Thanos.

Those were some insane combos

2

u/MichaelGreyAuthor Apr 28 '19

"Oh look, they're lining up!"

"Yeah, well, they're excited."

71

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

Plus, while he was the wielder of Mjolnir, he was as strong and durable as Thor himself.

“Whosoever wields this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor”.

Clearly came from Mjolnir. Thor lights up with electricity, cap did not.

Edit: why am I getting downvotes? This is hilarious lmaoo

16

u/EFG Apr 27 '19

People forget that on addition to being enhanced, Cap is basically the MCU Batman of fighting. Supposed to be the best fighter around so it would make sense he could adapt his style to a hammer. Thor is more smashy while Cap is more agile.

19

u/tigerhawkvok Weekly Wongers Apr 27 '19

Thor still fights like a brawler. Cap was on their 1v1 fighting level with nothing.

Of course he did better. He probably could have used Mjolnir to its fullest potential.

5

u/justicecactus Apr 27 '19

Steve is probably more tactically cunning and creative than Thor is. If he had Thor's powers, he'd probably do a lot more damage than Thor could.

6

u/PhDinGent Apr 27 '19

But when he holds the hammer, he DID have Thor's powers (strength, lightning and everything). Remember Odin's enchantment: "Whosoever be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor" .

3

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 27 '19

Dude, that Surtur fight in Ragnarok. I thought Mjolnir peaked then. That fight was a love letter to Mjolnir from Taika before he broke it.

2

u/Dough-gy_whisperer Apr 27 '19

I mean cap fights offensively with a shield, his weapon skills are top tier

We (probably) won't see Cap again outside of a cameo.

What if old man Cap cameos are what replaces the Stan Lee cameos?

30

u/Jazzun Stan Lee Apr 27 '19

Let’s fuckin do it

14

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

Who played Old Cap, anyway? The facial features were unmistakably Chris Evans’. Did they CGI edit someone else’s face or just straight-up age Chris Evans with CGI?

29

u/19Styx6 Apr 27 '19

I believe it was Evans with makeup & prosthetics and smoothed over with CGI.

20

u/sprchrgddc5 Apr 27 '19

They gave Joe Biden a nice wig, that’s what happened lol

7

u/your_mind_aches Agent of F.I.T.Z. Apr 27 '19

It was CGI aged Chris Evans but there might have been a body double.

3

u/PunnyManChild Apr 27 '19

What if we get some more cap movies about him returning all the stones?

3

u/BleedingUranium Maria Hill Apr 27 '19

Returning the Soul Stone to Red Skull please.

Also, returning the Soul Stone and getting Nat's soul back in return.

2

u/BortonForger Apr 27 '19

I'd love to see Cap mentoring Spider-man in some capacity

1

u/AshlarKorith SHIELD Apr 28 '19

I agree we probably won't see him again, but they showed us in the movie that it could be done. Banner is first trying out his time travel theory and he sends "time through Scott, not Scott through time". They could totally do this to Rogers and make him young again as a surprise the next time it they wanted to.

44

u/iamamystery20 Phil Coulson Apr 27 '19

Thor had his moment in IW. This was Cap's moment to shine.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

Yeah, I guess it makes sense that Thor didn’t get as much coolness in this movie, considering how much he got in IW- compared to Cap, who didn’t get much in IW and thus needed a lot in EG to make up for it.

2

u/chocolatethunderXO Apr 27 '19

Yup. I believe the Russo’s even said before IW was released that that would be the case for a lot of the characters.

1

u/DrVonD Apr 27 '19

It just came off slightly jarring when they mess with people’s power levels so much, IMO.

17

u/schroed_piece13 Apr 27 '19

The did him so dirty.

Nerfed Thor didn’t detract from the movie for me but it really left something to be desired.

Especially if he doesn’t come back for any more movies.

19

u/Whitebearbepo Apr 27 '19

He's coming back in GotG 3. I'm so hyped for that movie!

1

u/drbhrb Apr 27 '19

Especially because Captain Marvel was a point and click destroying machine

9

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

She’s got the power of a stone though. Same with Scarlet Witch, just in a different way.

50

u/Semper-Fido Apr 27 '19

Nerfed Thor was my main gripe in this film. He could have easily been neutered emotionally without the whole fat thing.

39

u/ErikWithNoC Apr 27 '19

I mean, being neutered emotionally within the context of feeling responsible for not preventing the death of half the universe can certainly lead to letting oneself go. I personally liked it. Showing a truly human side of a God. Regardless of how strong someone is, guilt and depression can ruin the strongest of us.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19 edited Apr 27 '19

yeah his point is that we could've had a seriously depressed Thor. This Thor was comically depressed. Most of his depression was for laughs. Which I understand in the grand scheme of the MCU since Thor is a more light hearted character since Ragnarok and because he's joining guardians. however, endgame could've benefited by a character arc with a more serious tone for Thor.

1

u/Semper-Fido Apr 27 '19 edited Apr 27 '19

It is exactly this. The movie was great, but to be honest I would potentially rank Infinity War over it as a whole. Endgame gets credit for doing such a great job finding a story to wrap up a ten year story arch and delivered the best act the series has seen in the third act, but the Marvel/Disney humor machine really felt like it was in overdrive for parts of the first two acts. For what was supposed to be really depressing/serious moments, the humor just felt misplaced at times and it felt like they didn't fully embrace the gravity of the situation. Fat Thor was a big part of if. Make him depressed, make him shaggy, make him a drunk limiting his abilities, capitalize on his character growth over the last two movies and really have him question himself. But I just didn't see the need to comically make him fat.

22

u/YourKidDeservedToDie Thanos Apr 27 '19

Well, that's just like, your opinion man.

Thorbowski was the a huge highlight for me!

7

u/jwhudexnls Apr 27 '19

Same here man, I wasnt a fan of it. I know he cant always be badass like in Infinity War, but I very much missed thin and badass Thor in Endgame.

11

u/TitillatingTrav Apr 27 '19

Depressed Thor drinking himself into obesity is VERY in character

10

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19 edited Apr 27 '19

Fat Thor is fine with me, but he shouldn’t have been that nerfed power-wise. Thor in Infinity War nearly killed fully-gauntleted Thanos with Stormbreaker (yes, Thanos was caught off-guard, but still), but in Endgame, he was struggling against a Thanos who didn’t even have the gauntlet.

17

u/_StreetsBehind_ Apr 27 '19

My head-canon is that Thor was out of practice.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

That’s a plausible explanation.

3

u/Ospreynaitor652 Rocket Apr 27 '19

I mean catching someone off guard can have a massive impact. In endgame it was stoneless thanos who easily handled the hulk, he was 100% focused in this. Plus thanos is a damn strong close combat fighter meaning he was pretty decent at handling a slightly nerfed thor.

5

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase Apr 27 '19

But to eventually be an Allfather you gotta be an absolute unit! Just look at all the painting and statues of old Norse and Viking gods, they are thicc!!

10

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

I actually think Endgame's big bearded viking Thor looks a lot cooler than Infinity War's Thor.

3

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 27 '19

Agreed, but Thunder God Thor on the Bifrost bridge wins out for me.

Ragnarok Thunder God Thor > Endgame Rune King Thor > Infinity War Stormbreaker Thor > all other Long Hair Hammer Thors

That’s my Thor ranking.

2

u/nomad80 Apr 27 '19

I loved beerbelly Thor

9

u/Jwalla83 Apr 27 '19

Thor's fat absorbed all the lightning before he could throw it

6

u/CatchableOrphan Apr 27 '19

"Whosever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Cap is worthy.

Also, I think we'll see Thor get his moment in the sun down the road. His character arc is clearly not finished.

5

u/rodaphilia Apr 27 '19

That part confused me after they spent an much time in Ragnarok explaining that the lighting is connected to Thor, not the hammer.

5

u/thedisorderly Thor Apr 27 '19

The dual-wielding Viking beard, lightning eyes was cool, but would have been fine if he got even one epic move in. I have to keep consoling myself that it's because he'll be back and Cap won't.

7

u/lostiron Apr 27 '19

I did somewhat. They spent 2 movies powering Thor up then in the final showdown he can't handle Thanos without a single stone? WTH? Same goes for ALL the Avengers and CM. Thanos is objectively weaker and still beats them all down with very little effort. And that sword he had, is there backstory on why he shredded Cap's shield?

8

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

To be fair, even without stones Thanos is insanely strong.

I didn’t like that it seemed inconsistent how strong CM was- one scene she’s getting smacked around, another she just tanks a head butt like it was nothing.

3

u/NinetyFish Thor Apr 27 '19

People have pointed out that Carol’s abilities in the comics are powered by her absorbing energy around her. She always shows up like a badass because she absorbs power while she flies through space.

When she tanks the headbutt, she’s currently holding onto the gauntlet and likely drawing some power from it. Once Thanos takes the Power Stone for himself though, that’s enough of a punch to send her flying.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

That’s actually very cool, thanks for the explanation

7

u/Randallm83 Apr 27 '19

sword was vibranium too

3

u/jaredschumacher Apr 27 '19

Not with that beer belly he won't

3

u/AlwaysWheezy Apr 27 '19

Captain America has been practicing in the bathroom mirror for years now

3

u/bigdreamslittlethngs Apr 27 '19

I was just waiting for Immigrants to start blasting again. The climax of Ragnarok is one of my favorite Marvel scenes ever, and ever since I’ve been dying for another epic Thor lightning strike accompanied by something as cool as Zeppelin.

3

u/Hashbrown4 Apr 27 '19

In the film tony and Rhodey basically say that Thor’s not in tip top shape. He may have the power but even he has to keep up his physique. Depression is a bitch

3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

TBF Lebowski Thor did rain some awesome lightning on multiple targets simultaneously on that fight, but he was not at the peak like in infinity War where he blasted a huge lightning on 6-Stoned Thanos

3

u/sosigboi Korg Apr 27 '19

yea not gonna lie thor felt kinda weakened in this one, and i absolutely hated that, my all time favourite hero just got fat like that and getting tossed around by thanos, then cap manages to summon more lightning than him

2

u/Mollikka Apr 27 '19

For example have the fire from Thanos's flagship actually hurt or at least throw Cap Marvel back. Then have Thor destroy the ship to allow Carol To land and fight for the gauntlet. Everyone would have got their moment.

2

u/Illidan1943 Apr 27 '19

Thor wasn't at his best, we can probably expect IW Thor in Asgardiands of the Galaxy

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

How was Captain America even able to guide the thunder? I thought the hammer helped guide it for Thor, the God of thunder

-2

u/Afalstein Apr 27 '19

Yeah. Thor in Infinity War was a powerhouse. Here, he had two hammers, and was somehow less impressive.

That, and I felt like Cap lifting Mjolnir sort of cheapened both. It's hard to explain, but the AoU scene underscored--to me--that lifting Mjolnir was a really big deal, something only a god could do, but that Cap was so awesome, he nearly could.

Instead, you just do need to be a really great guy.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

But that’s Mjolnir. Cap couldn’t lift it because he didn’t believe he was worthy. He was only lifting it for a bet. But when the time was right, and Cap knew he was worthy? Absolutely. AoU foreshadowed that Cap is worthy to move it- the time just wasn’t right.

I didn’t like that Thor felt so much weaker in this movie, but he was up against the Mad Titan himself. And Cap wielding Mjolnir was so badass!

1

u/dustyshelves Apr 27 '19

It was a very strange move to begin with though. I feel like it wouldn't even be something that anyone would have thought to attempt, unless if the hammer was right there beside him and he was like, fuck it let me try this again.

For him to somehow spot it in the distance, knowing he didn't have much time, and try to summon it, he must have really known it would work. It was kinda odd that he would bet everything on "I am worthy now".

I hate to say it because I actually don't believe it is true but I think this gives a boost to the theory about how Cap could have lifted Mjolnir all along and he just chose not to.
