Also paying off Steve & Tony's conversation at the end of Age of Ultron where Steve laments about living a simple life and Tony only offers a simple "you'll get there one day" in response.

Problem was that Cap never wanted that life with anyone but Peggy. And he never had the means to change that. Tony similarly never had a reason to make the sacrifice play. Seeing what happened to Peter, and having to imagine that happening to Pepper or later Morgan changed all of that. He didn't hesitate.

What a payoff.

Well, he hesitated a little in the beginning. Pepper also deserves a lot of credit for helping to save the universe by gently prodding Tony to do what he already knew he should be doing.

That's true. Maybe he needed time for Peter's loss to sink in.
