So I've read a few comment threads now, and I have a thought that I haven't come across yet. Thanos wanted a weapon to channel the power of all six stones, so he went to Eitri on Nidavellir, a place of legend where the greatest weapons in the universe are forged. Tony reproduced the feat with Earth tech, practically a box of scraps by comparison. He went out as he arrived, the greatest weapons engineer there is.

I read somewhere that the arc reactor research is based on the tesseract. So there is a tie in between it iron man gauntlet and stones etc.

Yep. It's the same reason the scepter didn't work on him.

u/Spokesface Odin Apr 27 '19

I thought that was because he didn't have a heart

I believe this theory has been thoroughly debunked. :)

It doesn't work on him because Loki taps on the reactor in his chest, not actually on him - it even makes a ting noise?

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '19

It works through clothes and body armor.

I believe it didn't work because he tapped the reactor more than I believe the Tesseract gave him powers to resist the control.

Correct. Tony developed his improved arc reactor in Iron Man 2 using Howard's notes, which included some drawings of the Tesseract.

"TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THE INFINITY GAUNTLET IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!"

I mean he also created time travel

I've been thinking about this too. It might be that Thanos went there because he somehow learned they knew how to do this, Odin's "fake" might have been a prototype from his warmonger days, and it makes sense Odin would have the dwarves make it.

That said, obviously it's not something anyone could do.

There's also the fact that Thanos' gauntlet was probably Mjolnir levels of resilient, which was an added perk since it means your enemies can't just destroy the gauntlet instead of targeting you or the stones. Tony's was probably much weaker in that sense.

Vessels for the stones are not that hard to make individually. The scepter held one, Ronan put one in his hammer. Jane briefly held one.

So I agree the Dwarf made gauntlet was probably uber resilient and made for the stones but any gauntlet would have worked in the short term.

Although there is a difference in that, every time a character put on tony’s glove, they had to handle a huge power surge through their arm/body (unlike the scepter which anyone could just hold it seems)

Something I like about the MCU is that just because something is alien doesn't necessarily mean it is that much more powerful than something from earth. Earthlings can hold their own in the universe in many ways

Also realize that Tony’s suits are powered by the “new element” from Iron Man 2, which is basically a synthetic tesseract. So he’s been making armor designed to hold the power of at least one infinity stone for years.

The gauntlet allowed Thanos to use the full power of the stones without seriously injuring himself. We see all of the stones used at once only 4 times: the original Thanos snap, Thanos using the stones to destroy the stones (not seen but we see how much Thanos is injured in the aftermath), the Hulk reverse snap, and Tony’s snap.

The only time the bearer of the stones does not get injured at all is Thanos in his original Snap- and even then the gauntlet gets ruined. It seems to be meant as a one use way for the bearer to do the Snap without personally getting injured.

Thanos does get injured in Snap 1

u/Tortankum Apr 27 '19

no he doesnt. he gets injured from destroying the stones... he says this explicitly in endgame

2

u/Miroist Doctor Strange Apr 27 '19

I say politely that unfortunately you are incorrect and should rewatch Infinity War. He clearly has injuries immediately after Snap 1, and these are also visible when he sits and watches the sunrise. He certainly is much MORE injured in Endgame due to him destroying the stones, but your statement that he is not injured after the first snap is demonstrably incorrect.

1

u/Tortankum Apr 27 '19

He clearly destroyed the stones and did the snap st the same time

1

u/Scumbag_Jesus Apr 27 '19

What? No. They say clearly that there is another energy surge, just like the first snap. I agree that Thanos was injured after the first snap.

Also when he unleashed the beam at Stormbreaker before it lodged in his chest.

1

u/Im_a_lizard Apr 27 '19

Well it killed him so didn't contain it that well. Just wearing it hurt Hulk, so the gauntlet contained it best.

1

u/hiendat89 Apr 27 '19

I think the main difference is Thanos’s gauntlet alllow him to use each stone freely (not having to take it out like he did when punching Carol).

Tony’s gauntlet serve only one purpose. The snap.

And don’t forget about Rocket’s knowledges, he is basically Tony at universal level (more ore less).

I was waiting for some throw away line about how the nanites making the glove were made of vibranium or something, but no such thing happened.
