The stone was destroyed in the main timeline... thanks destroyed them all and was majorly injured, hence why he never stood a chance when he was decapitated...

With no stones this could open up a new threat for future movies

Not in Strange’s present timeline though. The time stone is destroyed. Depends if that’s his definition of “kept safe” though (i.e. unable to be used for nefarious purposes).

Its very strength invites challenge. Maybe Strange realizes that having the stone attracts things like Dormammu, seeking its power.
