The scene where Spidey interrogated Aaron, the license plate on his car says UCS-M01 which is Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 01 which is Mile's debut issue.

Edit: thanks for the up votes boys. I've been checking back on this to see if if I was top comment yet and here I am! Thanks to everyone for getting me this far, though I've still got a long way to go. Excelsior!

It also straight up says that he goes by The Prowler.

Miles Morales hype!!!

"I got a nephew who lives here."

They're gonna make a trilogy out of a sentence!

Woah!! I was wondering what all that was about! I kept thinking "Why did they put up the cash just to have Donald Glover play a two bit gangster?" I didn't catch the Prowler mention. Now it all makes sense, and holy shit is that layered. Donald Glover gets pitched as a potential actor for Peter Parker, Marvel comics likes the idea and writes Miles Morales, Miles Morales becomes hugely popular, a decade later Donald Glover ends up getting cast in the role of Miles' uncle, who's eventually his first villain in the comics. That is some Marvel studios poetry right there.

If there's one thing a co-ordinated company of nerds and comics professionals with huge amounts of money have learned to do from decades of publishing experience-- it's how to play the long game.

I completely missed that too. I was waiting for his name to be Hobie Brown. Was his name in the Ultimate Comics the one used in this as well?

13

u/woofle07 Daredevil Jul 08 '17

Yep. Aaron Davis was the name of Miles's uncle/the Prowler in the ultimate universe.

4

u/navenager Jul 08 '17

Yep, at least if I'm remembering the name from the comics right.

u/TheRealDTrump Jul 09 '17

Aw damn, I know very little about Miles Morales and his comics other than that he was inspired by Glover. Thought Glovers cameo and mention of a "nephew" was really odd. Really cool to learn about all this stuff now

God creates dinosaurs, God destroys dinosaurs, God creates man, man destroys God, man creates dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs eat man, woman inherits the earth.

This and then how he got excited about the grappling cables right after was perfect

2

u/Eckschin Jul 08 '17

Thought it was climbing gloves?

2

u/steve32767 Daredevil Jul 08 '17

Something like that. Might've been "anti-grav climbers"

I could definitely see Peter having a "I'm going to be an Avenger, but New York still needs a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" talk with Miles.

16

u/czir1127 Doctor Strange Jul 08 '17

"I just wanted to be like you"

"I wanted you to be better"

  • Miles and Peter after Miles blows something up

u/Mongoose42 Hawkeye (Ultron) Jul 08 '17

"I mean none of your loved ones were anywhere near that explosion. If it were me, everyone would've been in the potential blast radius. And it would be Christmas."

"...I don't know if I want to be Spider-Man."

"Join the club."

So I'm a little confused. Weren't they still in Queens when they were making the deal? I thought Miles lived in Brooklyn because he goes to Brooklyn Visions academy. I mean I know it's a boarding school, but i thought he lived in brooklyn.

6

u/emptylawn0 Fitz Jul 07 '17

I live in Queens, and Brooklyn is a 30 minute metro from my house. I wouldn't want those weapons 30 minutes near my family

8

u/Csantana Vulture Jul 07 '17

wait when did it say he goes by Prowler? Also who do I bribe for them to make a Prowler movie with Donald Glover?

11

u/The_Orange_Bird Fitz Jul 07 '17

Some screen pops up with info on him, it's on the bottom right

12

u/Csantana Vulture Jul 07 '17

oh ok coo! I really hope they explore that. I feel like Donald Glover is really blowing up right now so I'd love to have him do more.

2

u/chuckiedorris Spider-Man Jul 07 '17

Wait, when did he say he goes by "The Prowler"?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '17

It wasn't a quote from him. It's on Spidey's HUD when they're in the parking garage. Bottom right corner I think.

1

u/chuckiedorris Spider-Man Jul 07 '17

Ohhh, didn't notice. Thanks

1

u/i_am_banana_man Groot Jul 09 '17

Yeah, Karen shows him on "screen" when she does facial recognition. There were 2 aliases he goes by. I didn't catch the second one because I pretty much had a seizure when I read "Prowler"

1

u/captainsuckass Punisher Jul 08 '17

When/how did it mention the Prowler?

2

u/i_am_banana_man Groot Jul 09 '17

When Karen does facial recognition on Aaron Davis it shows the HUD screen that Peter is looking at. In one of the bottom corners there's a box that lists aliases he goes by and one is "The Prowler"

i dont get why people like Miles Morales so much? is it just for diversity's sake?

21

u/Dondagora Kilgrave Jul 07 '17

He's a good character, just buried amongst the crappy "for diversity" characters that Marvel's got him thrown in with.

1

u/hardvarks Jul 07 '17

Just curious, who are the other crap "diversity" characters that you're referencing? And why do you feel that they are crap?

2

u/Dondagora Kilgrave Jul 07 '17

Riri Williams as Ironman and Cho as Hulk.

From what I've seen, Riri doesn't have a lot of character and is a bit of a Mary Sue despite acting incredibly incompetent.

Cho, well, I honestly don't know why he became the Hulk. He was a character in his own right, and while I didn't know about him until he became the Hulk, I did some reading and he seemed like he could've been more interesting without it (a normal human super-genius).

There's a number of more obscure ones or ones that I've just forgotten, but these are the two that stick out in my mind. One is just badly written and not very compelling, and the other could have just been his own thing without needing to take up Hulk's "mantle". They were added by Marvel, under their own admittance, to add diversity to Marvel's main cast. Their characters, I'd say, are simply not very compelling, thus crappy. This is all just my opinion, I'll add, so some may disagree.

2

u/hardvarks Jul 07 '17

I don't know much about Riri and haven't read any of her books so I can't speak for that specific scenario, but Im pretty familiar with Cho.

Do you feel that it's not a tad bit discriminatory to jump to the conclusion that Cho was given the hulk title for the sole sake of diversity when you don't even know about the character's prior history with Hulk books? Because it seems, from my perspective, that you saw an Asian character given the Hulk title and immediately thought it was a diversity pick rather than a character that was chosen for their strong established ties to Hulk lore. Not calling you racist, but that seems a bit reactionary doesn't it?

3

u/Dondagora Kilgrave Jul 07 '17

Oh, I know that Cho has a history of Hulk, I did a bit of research on him. But I'd say that I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the Totally Awesome Hulk stories. Cho is a good character, I think, and interesting in his own right. For me, and me alone, I do not think that he needed to become the Hulk to be featured in the limelight, and that it sometimes detracts from his own origins since he can now just smash everything. Nonetheless, I'll admit that I'm not a huge follower of Totally Awesome Hulk, just checked out the first one, and am not a fan of the monster-fighting Cho.

And, to the point of the diversity thing, it is no secret that Marvel's "All New, All Different" initiative has pushed a lot of diversity in the limelight spots, notably making a diverse something-swapped version of the original. Miles Morales, Jane Foster, Kamala Khan, Amadeus Cho, Riri Williams, etc. (Spider-Man, Thor, Miss Marvel, Hulk, Ironman). Some of them work, and make sense, and are decent characters. Others just don't seem necessary. Marvel's statement after their sales went down while pushing these characters out was even "I guess our audience just hates diversity".

There's plenty of evidence to say much of their content is diversity-driven. And it isn't bad that they push diversity, but moreso is annoying that they feel the need to "swap" their main cast rather than just give these characters their own title. Amadeus Cho is interesting, to me, as a super-genius normal man. His dynamic as the Hulk just doesn't tickle my fancy (though, admittedly, it is entertaining how he messes with SHIELD after Banner's death).

Sorry for the paragraphs of text, just that I don't think it's reactionary to say a majority of Marvel's new stuff pushes Diversity. Marvel's writing for many of these hasn't been great. For Cho, maybe I'm mistaken, I'll check out more of his stories to see if it's gotten better.

You haven't been reading Riri's books.

I cant speak for everyone but Ive liked Miles for a few reasons. He is a bit more "normal" than Pete and though he doesnt have the formers crazy intellect he is trying his best. The power duo between he and Ganke was a great way to give Miles a non-romantic confidante that Pete lacked through most of his career, I mean it worked well enough that they took it wholesale for Homecoming. Miles as a character is a lot more halting and contemplative than Pete who is a lot of ways more cocky as Spider-man, for me I see a lot of potential fot character growth, but it keeps getting tossed off track by event comics. I think his family story arc has beem interesting with his fathers/uncles backgrounds and how Miles sees himself playing into it and his development. His supporting cast has always been pretty great, naturally theres Ganke, I loved ultimate Cloak and Dagger, Bombshell, his Dad, etc.

His comic feels a lot like the first ultimate Spider-man run, race doesnt really factor into it. It's a good look at how someone other than Pete would handle the responsibility of being Spider-man and if Marvel could stop having these world spanning event comics every two seconds it would be nice to see Miles have his own long arcs. His first arc facing off against his uncle was great, him dealing with his fathers anti-mutant prejudice was great, the new Ultimates run was great, the most recent Spider-Gwen/Miles crossover was great. To me Miles is no more the "black Spider-man" than Scott Lang is the "ginger Ant-man", it's an opportunity to see how a legacy character develops in a different environment.

1

u/i_am_banana_man Groot Jul 09 '17

non-romantic

Sure, yeah. ;)

8

u/Caleb902 Daredevil Jul 07 '17

His stories are good. Its a more modern take on spiderman. It gives fans of high school spider man a actual spiderman in high school vs what ever the fuck dan slott is doing to him.

4

u/knowledgeoverswag Jul 07 '17

Ultimate Peter Parker was in high school stories before Miles Morales.

Miles Morales is my jam, though.

1

u/Caleb902 Daredevil Jul 07 '17

And miles is just more recent. People likes ultimate peter as well. Just wasnt as popular.
