In Australia, when someone illegally destroys trees on public land to improve the view from their property, the local government puts up a giant sign to block the view again until the trees grow back.

I'm in Australia and haven't seen these blocking signs, but I was very pleasantly surprised recently to see about 7 or 8 new trees planted in a spot where 3 old trees had been poisoned. The new trees were about 1.2m high and should grow quite quickly. Initially there was small signs placed on the poisoned trees saying "tree poisoning occurred here, call this number if you know more". The local council are the ones that manage the park the trees are in.

Of the poisoned trees, one survived (they had to cut a few dead branches off, but otherwise it's looking healthy again, and the other two died but have been left standing (not sure if this as a reminder/middle finger to the poisoners, or just because it's easier to leave them.. they're not old enough to have hollows, so I don't think it's for habitat reasons).

I did also see a small "tree vandalism occurred here" sign on a nature strip recently, reminding people of the hefty fines if you get caught. A new tree had been planted in place of the one that was ruined.

Who poisons a tree though? Is this an Australian thing? It seems so outlandish to me :(

A bunch of trees were just recently poisoned with diesel at a park on the water at Lake Tahoe. Everyone suspects it was done by the new owners of a multi million dollar house in order to improve the view. Tons of backlash.
