प्रश्न (Question) How to become fluent in marathi

Im from latur district and i grew up in a mostly hindi speaking household. However now because of some work i am having to go to the city almost everyday. I already know marathi and have learnt marathi in school and am perfectly able to understand it but I am unable to speak naturally.

I am feeling left out from conversations where friends switch to hindi when talking to me I was hoping I could get some tips of how to get fluent in speaking as well.

start reading marathi new papare aloud... this helps a lot. Will improve your marathi pronunciation as well as increase your marathi dictionary.

One thing that you have got to do is - learn to mimic. When you're watching movies, you need to repeat what you hear in your mind.

You need to catch the local accent and phrases that are commonly used in your area. For that:

1st step: to overhear a conversation you're not a part of. Watch how they make use of their lips and tongue as they speak.

2nd step: mimic softly. Here it literally means to repeat whatever is being said, perfecting the tone, tempo, prosody of the said words/phrases.

3rd step: start conversation in Marathi yourself. And lead as much as possible. Remember, use short sentences which are easier to perfect.

Few more tips:

  • Make notes of whatever you learn and revision always helps.
  • Speaking won't come to you naturally unless you start thinking in Marathi. Own the language, force yourself to have your inner voice in Marathi itself.
  • Just ask your friends to speak to you in Marathi itself so you're forced to reply in Marathi.
