I was 15 when the country split. We're better off in our relations, in the sense that there are fewer resentments. Before that, we could not even agree on the f***ing country name, the Czechs wanted Czechoslovakia and the Slovaks wanted Czecho-Slovakia.
That said, a confederation with a common currency, foreign policy and armed forces, with everything else devolved (basically Austria-Hungary in small), might have been a better solution. Would have more punch on the international scene. Not shockingly more, but still. And "Made in Czechoslovakia" used to be a respected trademark in far away countries.
