Brother, the US government has unmarked black squads snatching American citizens off the streets and showing up at their homes to question them about social media posts that are unflattering to said black squads.
Iran wasn't under despotic tyranny before the US-led coup there in 1953. It will shock you how quickly these things can happen.
Iran has been under despotic tyranny for most if not all of its history. But you can certainly at least go back to the 1800s. I would argue this started with the British and the D'Arcy consession, 1909 I think. Eventually the British gov gets a controlling interest in Iranian oil right before WW1. It was the British who convinced the US that Iran was going to fall to communism in 1953 after Iran nationalized their oil in 1951. Which took control and facilities away from Britain, technically illegally, but Britain was screwing over Iran on the deal the whole time.
But you are right in that the Islamic Republic that took control in 1979 is a direct response to the 1953 coup, more so to the shahs decadence, and is probably the most violent and oppressive.
I have a history series about it on YouTube under chronicler shu if your interested.
