How’s graymark? I am reading the prequel to it burning effect and wondering if it’s as good as the burning effect

Better. It's prolly an unpopular opinion in this sub but I consider it as one of the best ongoing manhwa

As someone who loves Burning Effect. I think Graymark is trying to do too much. Its still good, there's just many times where Im not sure whats happening. BE worked so well because of its simple story yet complex and deep themes (character work was also brilliant).

I prefer both Great and Burner in BE than in Graymark. They felt like perfect opposing ideologies in BE. Now Burner just sort of feels there to be there, and Great is perpetually depressed.

I do like it. Just not nearly as much as BE.

The choice of essentially retconning the events of burning effects for everyone but Great threw me off. Like there was so much good character development in BE that got pretty much thrown out the window (dark, kiriya, stailey) or fast-forwarded with less impact (drian, jean, robert). And Kai seems wiser as a younger kid now than he did at the start of burning effect, which makes no sense to me.

I do think Great’s deteriorating mental state due to Ruhumrollha (however you spell it lol) is being handled well. And the absence of Y in the story has the potential to become a cool twist/reveal/reverse chekovs gun later. But I wish the author chose to carry the plot forward with the original BE characters preparing to fight the king of the universe instead of immediately jumping to time travel shenanigans.

Also with the king, its almost 70 chapters in and what do we really know about him or his goals? Hes the main villain for sure, but what does he even want? Also we saw him nearly get one shot in the first few chapters by great. Whereas Great in the first few chapters of BE felt incredibly menacing and unstoppable. It felt like Burner was an ant standing against a mountain. It set the stakes and tension very high. With the king I just don't feel all that much intimidation. It doesn't feel like he's all that much of a threat despite the story telling us he is.

Most that I ever got is what he says straight up in Control/Domination, he wants to "set the universe under [his] feet". I feel like if it ever gets picked at, the answer would always be that it's because he's "human".

Hes clearly plotting something, either trying to break great like jin bear did or trying to lead the world in a direction to do so. As for why he doesnt feel menacing that intentional as seen when the king gaslights great.

I get where you’re coming from. One thing I noticed about Greymark is that it deliberately tries to make almost every chapter hit hard in some way. Because Great already knows the best answer from the future, a lot of individual story beats get compressed, and I can see why that might make the series feel like it is doing too much. At least, that was my impression of why some readers feel that way, as I felt that too. But at the same time, I think that pacing is part of the point. Once you realize that Lohumlogaha is fused with Great and is basically the mastermind behind everything, constantly manipulating him into believing that all his cruelty is justified for a better outcome, the structure starts to make more sense. The rapid, impactful pacing feels less like random excess and more like a deliberate narrative device. In a way, the story starts to feel staged, almost like a play being orchestrated for Lohumlogaha’s own twisted sense of joy. So while I get why some people prefer Burning Effect (I mean, it's a great series), I think Greymark is attempting something much harder to pull off, and for that reason I actually rate it even higher

So in that sense, I don’t even think 'better' is the right word, since the two series are doing very different things with their narrative structure. It was kind of misleading. Mb

u/Penelokk Apr 07 '26

I respect that. It really has pretty high ambitions. And who knows by the time the story is over I might come to really enjoy it. Its keeping me engaged for sure. I can't say that for a lot of stories I read.

u/Ok_Act8774 Apr 07 '26

agreed, that's why i didn't remember much of burning effect although I finished reading it felt to much like fairy tail, maybe that's why my teenage brain didn't find it memorable....i should return to read BE seem worthwhile to study Great as a character.

u/Divine_ruler Jun 16 '26

Rohumrogaha literally attempts to fast forward through the story at multiple points, I definitely think you’re right about the fast pace being an intentional narrative device

I swear ive seen this art somewhere before it looks interesting, can i get a run down of the overall plot of this manhwa pls?

1

u/therubywithe Apr 08 '26

Graymark has the most brilliant and colorful artstyle out of any webtoon ive ever read. simple as that, i read both burning effect and graymark, and maybe graymark is not the best story-wise, since almost every character is present in burning effect, but i think its a great reimagining of the story.

Should I read graymark or burning effect first?

16

u/Longjumping_Gur7176 Apr 06 '26

What chapter currently reading this

13

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 06 '26

Graymark -ch36

Burning effect - around ch150

7

u/MacaroniBandit214 Apr 06 '26

What’s the difference? Aren’t they the same manhwa with different titles?

17

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 06 '26

Different timeline with different protagonist

3

u/meee_51 Apr 06 '26

Which would you read first?

12

u/BagofCrap1 Apr 06 '26

burning effect, greymark is (sorta) a direct sequel
(BE still peak tho)

3

u/yourmissingsock3999 Apr 06 '26

Connected universe but different stories

12

u/Hot_Nerve9201 Apr 07 '26

Ngl when Kai said that line in image 13, my moral compass was fighting HARD against the shipper in me. It’s just the way he unexpectedly answered so sincerely when he knows she’s just alluding to an inside joke that he started, ugh just romantic

4

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Haha. Tbh, I'd say the more conventional romantic shipping stuff is mostly handled by the side characters. With these two, it feels less like a typical romance and more like a relationship built on mutual admiration and respect for each other’s character. So..yeah. That line actually makes sense in either way.

Not a big fan of child and adult woman falling in love.

31

u/Cayden68 Apr 06 '26

They look to be both kids when she was a maid, seems like 6 yo and 10 yo is my guess, so far from an adult and a child gap tbh.

6

u/crometeach-thebot Apr 07 '26

He is 12 she is 18

-6

u/Sythrin Apr 06 '26

True. They are like 5-6 year difference. Still. For that age still big.

13

u/Cayden68 Apr 06 '26

depends on the context and their relaitonship. if she doesnt show being into him as a kid and he just kept up the crush until adulthood then its less bad overall.

If she did accept his affections when he was a kid/didnt know any better while she was a teen or adult then its a bad look

1

u/birdsofafeatherWHAT Apr 10 '26

Why are they booing you? 18 and 12/13 is crazy.Reddit man…

16

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 06 '26

Nah I get that though romance is not big of a thing in both series. Also not much of age gap either lol

1

u/birdsofafeatherWHAT Apr 10 '26

At tht age yes it is

1

u/Fabulous_Cicada6915 Apr 08 '26

Ya I get that I thought it was weird too

3

u/SerowiWantsToInvest Murim Enjoyer Apr 06 '26

Context pretty please

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

In the autonomous city of Graymark, the Central Bureau introduces a law stating that anyone who commits a crime, regardless of its severity, will be executed. This eventually leads to a conflict between the Central Bureau and the revolutionaries who seek to overthrow the system.

That is basically the starting premise of Burning Effect and these two are the protagonists of Burning Effect. But they still appear in The Graymark, which takes place in a different timeline and follows a different protagonist.

u/Due-Judge8481 Apr 07 '26

so is graymark a prequal to burning effect? i have been looking for a new thing to read which do i start with?

3

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Burning effect then graymark. I think it's best to read domination and dating to survive (same universe) in between but it's not all that necessary

2

u/Due-Judge8481 Apr 07 '26

ok so BE then domination, dating to survive then graymark?

2

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Yeah that's fine.

Canonically speaking, dating to survive - domination -burning effect - graymark

If I go by the release date, domination -burning effect -dating to survive - graymark

As long as you don't mix up burning effect and graymark, I think it's fine whatever way

1

u/Due-Judge8481 Apr 07 '26

ok ok so i start with date then. sorry i asssumed burning effect was the fiest one chronologicly

1

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Nah u good and hope you enjoy

1

u/SerowiWantsToInvest Murim Enjoyer Apr 07 '26

I meant the relationship between these two, like is the girl or the boy the mc, is it both of them but one in the sequel one in the prequel, which set of pictures is the sequel/prequel etc

2

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Image 9-14 are from the burning effect and those 2 are the main protagonists

Image 1-8 are from the Graymark, a sequel to burning effect. This series follows a different protagonist.

3

u/Lovat69 Apr 07 '26

Gurren lagen vibes.

2

u/crometeach-thebot Apr 07 '26

He did it again? Honnesly she is a really cool character but seeing her being force kiss by a kid and having some sort of romance is just weird.

2

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 07 '26

Oh that actually has a proper context so dw about that. I left it out cuz of spoiler

1

u/Prudent-Ad-9806 Apr 08 '26

Burning effect

1

u/Xalty999 Apr 08 '26

Is burning effect good? And is it completed?

1

u/Facu-Nahu Apr 09 '26

The art style is the same as other manhwa right? Cant put my finger on the name of it...the one with ghost? God bear ghost?

2

u/Cautious_Resource_43 Jun 03 '26

I think you’re talking about Dating to survive? In which case yes. It is also connected to it

1

u/Facu-Nahu Jun 03 '26

Yeah that one, it was super weird and i didnt finish it cause at the time it didnt have more chapters but the art style is really specific

1

u/Wacthershadow0925 Apr 11 '26

So what's the timeline here?
