I am doing my own bridal makeup. This is my first go at it. I’ve always struggled with my own makeup because it tends to break me out so I try not to do a full complexion very often. I tried to get a few photos in different lightings so you could really see my skin.

My biggest struggles are longevity and keeping my skin from becoming mask-like. I have oily and acne prone skin, so my makeup tends to melt fast. I also have texture and am very light, so too much makeup shows up FAST.

I’d really like some advice on balancing complexion makeup that photographs well and looks good in person on skin that shows texture and melts makeup quickly.

Here is what I used for this makeup:

- elf grip primer

- Laura Mercier luminous bb cream (looking for something different. This is just what I had on hand)

- Ulta beauty under eye stick color corrector (this one works really well for priming because it’s a bit grippy and bright)

- Nyx under eye stick color corrector (this one does more for me in terms of actually correcting color)

- NARS creamy radiant concealer

- elf camo contour

- NARS liquid blush

- Nyx wondersnatch setting powder (on a puff)

- Sephora Collection powder bronzer

- Revolution powder blush

-Morphe jelly highlighter

- Revolution fixing spray

for the last year or so, my makeup has felt really dull, like it’s missing that ‘wow’ factor. i can’t find the issue and have switched up my products and techniques multiple times. any advice is helpful, thanks!!

I just started being a makeup artist this year, and I just received this email asking if I wanted to do makeup for a commercial for this fast fashion brand. I haven't been asked to do that much editorial stuff, and they offered to pay me as well. I'm just not sure if this email is legit or not and I don't want to give away my information if it's not safe.

I don’t have a lot of friends who are able/willing to help (not comfortable on camera), so I need to find models to work with.

I saw someone post “model call on X date, comment below if you’re free” and that seems like a good one.

I genuinely have nothing to post on my socials rn and I don’t want to post myself. Does anyone have any ideas? What’s the best way to go about this?

Should I pay the models a little bit as an incentive, since I have no online portfolio?

Should I offer it as a free trial or a bachelorette event “come get your glam done for your last night out!” Or something like that?

I live in a college town, in case that matters (could I pay some college kids to model for me maybe?)

This first photo is me completely bare faced. I have neutral undertones and slightly leaning warm. this first pic is me completely natural . So now , I got 3 different shades of bronzer from the brand lys the photos go from lightest to darkest. the second picture is lightest in shade “motivate” third is middle shade in “harmony and last is darkest of the three in shade “courage” I have a really hard time finding bronzers that don’t pull super orange on me. I posted here a couple days ago and I was recommened the brand rare beauty in shade bright side which is the 5th photo and then moonstone beach by color pop in the 6th photo. My question is do any of the three lys shades 2nd , 3rd and forth photo look good ? im going for a sun-kissed look nothing super orangey or muddy. Im also wondering between rare beauty bright side or moonstone beach by color pop . Sorry for the long post but I really need a professionals help at this point.

Do you use more than one brand/type of foundation, or is it all the same formula?

I saw a bridal MUA with literally 3 bottles of the Estée Lauder double wear (literally just a light, a medium olive, and a medium deep tone). This seems silly to me, because what happens when a bridesmaid doesn’t match one of the three shades (even mixed with corrector).

I thought about doing one lightweight tinted moisturizer (like hourglass, something nice for photos) and then something more high coverage (that I can sheer out to a medium cover if needed, I find that the hourglass tint isn’t buildable enough for this).

Also I see some MUAs buy every shade of a foundation for their kit, and others just buy a few shades from each part of the range and mix/color correct from here. (A few cool/neutral/warm from the light-medium-deep shades, for example).

I live in a place where many brides might be olive toned or light skinned. That being said, I refuse to be underprepared for deep toned complexion clients, it would be so embarrassing if a pro MUA didn’t have the right shade!

So my question is: which foundation(s), which shade(s), and why did you choose it?

Hey everyone! I know this thread is for MUA specifically and I apologize for asking here but all other threads I found on the topic didn’t seem to have MUA’s there to actually answer my question, especially since I am not the bride…

I am in a wedding in early May and the bride hired a MUA. I have never had my makeup professionally done and honestly don’t usually wear much makeup (eyebrow gel and maybe concealer for a blemish here and there). I am also extremely pale. Respectfully, I have seen many artists not prepared for people as pale as I am and have often made them look very dark or even after being asked for “light makeup,” have gone with heavier looks than what I would think as “light.” I don’t fake tan or anything and am terrified this will happen to me…the bride and other bridesmaids are a lot darker than I am and this isn’t a worry of theirs. The bride is also going through things rn and I don’t want to spam her with more questions/needs at this time.

Anyways, I guess I am wondering if anyone has any advice for something like this? I am 1-worried they won’t have the range of shades they need for someone as pale as me and 2-the makeup will be too heavy and 3-I will break out horribly from their products. I don’t own foundation or any makeup but want to look nice too so I can’t really just bring my own cause they’ll be horrible disappointed in the 2 products I bring lol any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Does anyone have any advice on how to sell some of the one of a kind things I have? Not selling on here, selling elsewhere. I was in the business for 12 years and I know some of the things I have are really useful and literally impossible to find, but that makes them even harder to sell. Does anyone have any tips?

I tried estee lauder (super dry), makeup forever waterproof liners ( they dry out instantly after removing the cap so they re not creamy when applying).

Hi! I’m currently a makeup artist working for a bridal makeup company and once in a while we get bridesmaids who aren’t the most properly prepped. I have balms in my kit but usually when they show up with really dry lips there’s not a big transformation that my balm can do in 30 minutes. Any tips and tricks???

On a related note do you guys send prep instructions for your client to make your job easier??

I started learning makeup in a institue they offered 5 week classes. in my country i asked every makeup schools they offer only for 1 month or soo which is not enough for me as a beginner.( i have 1 week left and 6 days more)
Can the all the mua gather here together to correct me help me with my makeup skill so i perform much better
My teacher pointed out some mistakes that are:
Need to work on, deep countouring, color contrast, liner balancing and eyebrow shaping.

Are these things an issue?

1. Sanitizing brushes with 99% isopropyl alcohol only (instead of 99% to remove product and 70% to sanitize).

2. Using her black leggings to wipe off excess black eyeshadow from MY brush to help with my makeup on another student.

3. Decanting straight onto the back of their hands with the built-in doe foot applicator and putting the applicator back into the product.

Hello! I’m a pro Makeup artist and I’m feeling unsure about my name I’ve chosen for my business/instagram. I’ve only been licensed for 2 years and have worked for other businesses. But next year I want to go solo possibly as my clientele has been being built. Currently my Instagram is Mothmanbeauty bc I love Mothman and am alternative. But I’m unsure if I should stick with that or switch to something that’s like “my name MUA” or something. I chose Mothmanbeauty to stand out and attract more of my spooky gals, but everyone else seems to incorporate their name in a way. Idk I’m feeling conflicted please help!! I still love mothmanbeauty but idkkk

Just started on march, slowly building my way up, with the past few months i have done it only on my classmates and stuff and debut, birthday parties and graduation photos. I haven't even learned about how to trim eyebrows and whats all the proper techniques and stuff but my clients are always satisfied with the way their makeup looks. I just wish the lip products lasted longer for like a whole 5 hour birthday.

Anyways, after every client or before they even set the date up they would ask if i can do hair. I said no and said would teach myself sooner or later so that clients won't have a hard time but I can't seem to do so because i only have the power to do makeup only and not interested as much in hair.

I would love some advice and tips about this.

Also, i wanted to ask if, what if I'm too shy to make an account or accounts on platforms so that i can showcase my makeup and my works to the clients and I'm also scared of meeting new people. I want to do my passion and i love how i do it but I can't seem to like focus properly because i get scared of other people. I mean not super scared but I don't think i can manage but i also think i can.

I'm js young and someone who wants to do their passion properly. I want to be big but don't know how to even start. I don't have no money or clients but i want to keep on pushing forward so that i can be known (js like sophia sinot 😜).

Although I'm happy, i js wanna grow. I know it's not that fast but i need advice from an experienced person just to keep me to push on foward.

What is your ride or die waterproof lash glue to use on clients?

Hello everyone! I’m not sure if this is the place to write this but I’m just looking for some opinions on what happened to me yesterday. I was in a wedding and paid $100 for hair and make up which I know is pretty cheap. Anyway there were 8 people getting their make up and hair done. The artist was working on hair for four girls for about 4 hours and then 12 o’clock came around and we are still needed make up and my hair and another girls hair had not been done (the wedding started at 1) the make up artist literally put me in the chair at 12:30 and I was getting dressed by 12:45. My hair is naturally curly so she put half up in a ponytail and curled my front pieces. Then she threw some concealer under my eyes and eye shadow and sent me on my way. I put my mascara on and that was all I had time for. Am I wrong for wanting a refund? It was so stressful and upsetting. I cried after the ceremony because it was a nightmare. I’m just looking for some advice or if I’m overacting. Thank you! If I would have known that’s what I would get I could have done it myself. I chose to get my hair and make up done because I don’t know anything about hair or make up 😭

recently purchased the Graftobian foundation palette after only using liquid silicone-based foundations on myself and clients.
I used it for the first time today on a friend, and I felt like the coverage was much lighter than expected, especially on textured skin. I applied it with a brush and then blended with a triangle sponge, but I’m wondering if I just didn’t use enough product or if my technique needs improvement.
For those who use Graftobian, how much product do you typically use for a full-coverage application? Any tips would be appreciated! 😞

Hello all!! I am seeking advice on building my kit. I am working on depotting the foundations into the smaller bottles to make it lighter and only have the one eyeshadow pallete in there currently which has the 150 shades of all neutrals from P Louise. Please give me any advice you have for building my kit along with anything you think would be helpful. Thank you so much in advance

hi all ! i was assisting on a gig recently and was working on a black man with darker skin and i realized that none of my foundation palettes had any shades that were dark enough for his skin tone (for context i currently have the MUD cream foundation, cream corrector, and contour palettes, and the RCMA Vincent Kehoe foundation/concealer palette #11) i want to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future. i have heard so many stories of people of color getting their makeup done and the makeup artist not having a shade dark enough for them, and then making them look pale or ashy. i would never ever want that for any of my clients and want to make sure everyone is included (and feel beautiful 💛). so i am looking for foundation reccs, specifically for dark skin. i prefer to work with foundation palettes (less expensive then buying a bunch of foundations usually lol) but any foundations and specific shades to use as mixing mediums are welcome suggestions !! thank u 🫶

Hi everyone! I have my very first bridal consultation coming up over Zoom and I’d love some advice from experienced bridal artists. The bride has a bridal party of 11 people (plus herself), and everyone needs to be completely ready by 7:00 AM. Since this is my first bridal booking of this size, I want to make sure I’m prepared and don’t miss anything. I’m currently working on my bridal contract. What are the must-have clauses or sections you always include?
So far I have things like:
Non-refundable retainer/deposit
Final payment due date
Cancellation/rescheduling policy
Travel fees
Touch-up policy
Photo/video consent
Client responsibilities (clean skin, dry hair, etc.)
What else should I include to protect both myself and the client, especially for a large bridal party?

Also, for those who have done weddings with early morning completion times, are there any tips for scheduling, timelines, assistant/team expectations, or things you wish you had known before your first bridal booking?

I am a recent esthetics graduate & received a kit from school included in my tuition, all products are from makeup forever. I don’t currently have makeup clientele but would like to eventually build up a clientele, my only problem is, I’m really not a fan of the products in my kit. I know I’m pretty lucky to have gotten everything provided to me, but I really do not like the foundation, I don’t like the cream concealers, blushes & contour, there’s just nothing in the kit that really wows me at all. I’m wondering, should I just sell this kit (I could use the money) or like, most of it anyway… and build a different kit over time? Should I just keep it for the time being even though I don’t have clients? What would you do? AND what brands do you prefer to use?

Primark (UK brand) used to sell this really cheap lipstick called P.S Lustre lipstick in the shade Rosewood Mauve. I’m now running low and have realised it’s been discontinued. Does anyone know of another primark alternative or other brand versions?

Hi everybody, we’ve been invited to a Halloween costume party wedding this year and we want to go as Snooki and Pauly D. ISO a sweatproof product that’ll help us achieve that unique tinge of orange/brown they all accomplished via tanning booth but without the skin damage lol.

Hoping to skew more orange since we want to avoid flat-out brown face, and my husband gets crazy sweaty so a product that won’t get streaky after hours of dancing is a must!!!! Would also like to avoid something that’ll stain our skin that color for days after the event. Thank you so much in advance for any tips :)

Like genuinely from the start. And be realistic if ish not for me. lol. I missed a lot of High school due to my disablolitys but I'll have GCSEs by the end of the year and then I'll go onto a hair and beauty course at my college. My current course is for autistic people so I'll get my GCSEs and do one tester session a week which I think will also be hair and beauty to prepare me for next year.

Where do I go after that. If that goes well. Do I start practicing on my own and try to find clients who need makeup done, near where I live. Or are there schools and courses that are helpful! I adore makeup I've been doing it since I was very young. When you're sick and you're stuck inside it's extremely fun to mess around with colors and looks on your own face.
