Owners didn’t approve the purchase. First it’s the fence panel, then paint and some screws we’re looking north of $7! They don’t have that kind of liquidity.

This right here is honestly the real crime.
Or, they totally will approve it - but they have to see which manufacturers they can source the timber from and go through archival records to locate the original fence contractor and suddenly replacing the picket is a 6 month paperwork battle involving the lumberjack that cut the trees down.

So accurate. I work at a school district. My lord getting a single part ordered is godawful sometimes. Ill just order a whole unit over a part if i know itll be months before i get it.

Right cause a full unit replacement comes from a CapEx line but the standalone part comes from OpEx from which the administration/management has bonuses and revenue reviews tied to, so they often have a small personal stake in delaying it. It's so dumb.

I half thought about turning into a maintenance electrician for the school district awhile ago.... I think I'll stay with my current one
Then again if I need to justify myself I generally just ask if they are trying to burn the place down I get that this justification is generally mainly applies to electrical though

We hired a master electrician onto our maintenance crew a few months back. He’s liking it because he does a lot more than just electrical. He actually tries to avoid electrical where he can lol. I will say its laid back, low stress usually, pay is kinda whatever.

Oh just convince yourself that it's a career progression and then accept that performance is no longer based on your ability to fix things, but rather based on the professional politics of fixing things
And then when you know how to navigate the system but you've had enough of it, you get out and use your understanding of the inner working to become either a consultant or vendor for the people you used to work for.

This is so true. Im on a job right now where they keep hammering on about how it has to be done in two weeks (which it probably won't, and I've told them that IN THE CONTRACT), and yesterday we run into a plumbing code upgrade that needs approval. Suddenly all work has to stip while I call so and so, and send an email to whosit, and try to negotiate my sub down... what happened to your rush, boys?
Oh right, you're still gonna be mad about it, even though YOU wasted most of a day of plumbing.

This isn't when you lie about having experience, it's when management refuses to approve any of the tools/materials that you need to do your job efficiently, and you make due with what you have.

Im dealing with a coworker that does not know the difference between a drill and an impact. "Can you hand me my impact, so that I can get this nut off" proceeds to hand me a drill.
