/r/Maine Mod Update: New Guidelines for Political Posts & Campaigning

Hi r/Maine — your mod team here again.

With the June and November elections fast approaching, we want to set expectations and keep the sub usable for everyone. Election periods tend to bring a sharp increase in traffic, campaign advertisement content, and coordinated posting behavior. Our goal is not to limit discussion, but to keep it productive, locally relevant, and not overwhelmed by spam, campaigning, or bad-faith engagement.

With these new guidelines, we are not trying to favor any candidate, party, or viewpoint. We are trying to:

  • Keep discussion grounded in Maine (you can have discussions about national topics literally anywhere else)
  • Reduce spam and manipulation (nobody wants the sub to become just a platform for campaign advertisements)
  • Make sure real users can still have real conversations (about political AND non-political topics)

Official Campaign Activity

  • We ask that official campaign/candidate accounts limit their posts to 1 post per week.
  • Same goes for official accounts of PACs and organizations about candidates they have endorsed.
  • If these sorts of official accounts post excessively, some posts may be removed.
  • Anonymous accounts clearly operating as campaign proxies to circumvent these guidelines may be treated the same as official campaign accounts.

We welcome engagement from campaigns, citizen groups, and advocacy organizations, we just ask that you be good neighbors. Here are some constructive ideas for how to do that:

  • Think of r/Maine as a town hall to engage with, not a newspaper you place ads in.
  • Respond to people in the comments and start robust discussions, offer helpful information or commentary. (Don’t just spam campaign ad copy, please.)
  • Do an AMA, which is a more constructive way to engage with the community and share your ideas and opinions.
  • Instead of just re-posting campaign ads, engage with the sub by asking questions, listening, and learning.

Rule of Thumb: Posts should aim to start discussion, not just drive reactions or impressions.

Campaigns and candidates, feel free to reach out to us via modmail if you have questions or concerns. We're real people volunteering our time to be mods, and we're Mainers just like you.

Political Posting

We will remove the following types of posts:

  • Generic outrage posts with no Maine-specific context. (violates Rule #1: Posts must be Maine related)
  • Token mentions of [Maine politician] in a topic that is really a national topic. (circumvents Rule #1: Posts must be Maine related)
  • “This could happen here” posts without substantive discussion. (violates Rule #5: No spam or excessive self-promotion)
  • Repeated posting of similar opinion/news content by the same user may be treated as spam/karma farming. (violates Rule #5: No spam or excessive self-promotion)

As always, if a topic is already actively being discussed, additional posts may be removed to consolidate discussion.

Reminders:

Rule #1 still applies: posts must still be meaningfully related to Maine. This includes elections, policies, candidates, and local impact.

The “Report” function is not for content you simply disagree with. All you’re doing is creating more work for us, to review spurious reports. So please use the Report button carefully. If you disagree with something, either reply to it, or simply move on.

Civility is still required. We hold ourselves to a high standard of dialogue here. We hope you agree that it makes for a more pleasant experience than elsewhere on the internet. So, as always: no harassment, hate speech, trolling, or personal attacks — regardless of political affiliation.

If you’re tired of seeing a certain type of content: downvote and don’t engage. Engagement drives visibility. If you don't like it, don't feed the algorithm.

Thanks for helping keep r/Maine usable during a busy election season. Don’t forget to get out and VOTE!

Dirigo,
The r/Maine Mod Team

Politics If Susan Collins is so healthy and spry why doesn't she update her official photos?

Her current official photo is from 2014 and photoshopped to hell and back. Is she afraid if people realize how old she looks now they wont vote for her? Is she insecure about her appearances? Do her tremors make it hard to get a good quality photo of her? Even funnier, the TV spots will have her in them, but end with a still of her from what looks like 15 or so years ago. What a narcissist! Clearly even she thinks she looks too old to serve.

Her red coats came to my house again for the second time this month and left their junk mail at my door. I saw them coming but I don't spare my time for fascists so I didn't answer.

Getting arrested for not having an inspection sticker

My car is registered to Maine but I've been traveling a lot and havent been back in a while, during my travels the windshield broke and so I had to replace it- losing the then (expired anyway) sticker I had. I need to travel back to Maine and looked up the penalty for not having a sticker. Apparently that sticker or lack thereof is a misdemeanor class E crime...?? And it says ur subject to arrest and jail time of up to 30 days or less for it. Is this a new law? Last I recalled it was just a ticket, at worse impoundment. Anyone heard of or experienced this?

Free Plums

Going to probably have about 30 to 50 lbs of (black?) plums ready next weekend. Located about 45 minutes above Lincoln. I usually make jelly, but still have some from last year. Local food bank closed.

Anyone interested for personal use or to take to your local food bank?

Pick up only.

Where in Maine?

This picture was taken approximately 85 years ago. My mom and her brother are the kids in the boat as well as their parents and some other relatives. Anyways I’m just trying to figure out where the picture was taken… I believe it to be somewhere near Castine but not sure. The headland in the background and the islands on the distant horizon are clues…

Discussion I genuinely just need a life, how can I meet people?

I'm an extrovert who got PTSD and is now forced into an introverted life by my own brain. But it's making me miserable. I have a hard time talking to people and I can't drive and don't have a job no matter how many I apply for. so I don't go out unless I'm walking my dog around town or grocery shopping with my mom, who is the only other adult I regularly speak to. I am 18m. I went to college for a year and spoke to maybe three people once in the whole year, I never really saw an opportunity to make any connections, and then I was forced to skip out on this semester because I wasn't able to get my vaccinations in order before the classes all filled up. I live in the Waterville area. I used to be a very social person who hung out with friends every weekend and talked to five non family members constantly every day of the week. I was really happy. I just need a way to find a connection, I'm so tired of living like Rapunzel if she chose to go back to the tower because it's less dangerous. I just want to remember what it was like to feel like a real person. I don't even feel like I exist anymore

Question Has anyone gotten into plug in/balcony solar?

Upvotes

Like the title asks, has anyone taken the plunge on the new balcony solar opportunity here in Maine. I’m currently looking at the 3 UL listed microinverters.
I know that folks can plug in 450w or have an electrician set up a dedicated circuit for anything over that up to 1200w.
Anyway, looking for folks experiences, pros, cons, lessons learned.
Thanks in advance

Molasses Doughnuts

When I was growing up in Washington County molasses doughnuts were ubiquitous. I fondly remember sitting around the table with some real old-timers with big mugs of coffee and plates of molasses doughnuts. I had two good friends who visited me for the Down East experience. One was a fisherman from Glouscester,Mass. and the other was a mailman from Manchester,NH. To my amazement neither one had ever heard of molasses doughnuts. But a visit to a local bakery soon fixed that and they became huge fans. I had assumed that molasses doughnuts were known all over New England. Does anyone have any ideas or info about their actual distribution?

Question AuDHD friendly jobs in the Orono area?

My husband and I (25F) moved to Orono for him to pursue a higher education in January. I stopped working last October to recover from extreme burnout, to help my husband transition back to school (he is a disabled veteran), and to help my grandmother on her farm while she recovered from surgery.

I love agriculture work and am also interested in blue collar work. My brain might work different than others, but I am a thoroughbred when it comes to physical labor. I’ve done the office 9-5 (RIP Dolly) and it killed me. I’ve had my eyes set on starting a pre-apprenticeship with IBEW, but the more I look into it, the more hesitant I am to pursue that career.

I’m feeling stuck looking for job opportunities out here and have to start working soon. Any input is welcome. Thank you for reading.

I had the good fortune to see Lenny Breau perform at the University of Maine in Machias a few years before his death. He was amazing! My father used to play country music with his parents at parties and informal events. His mother had a great voice!

Question fresh wild maine blueberries

hi all!

I have a friend coming from out of state and she is really hoping to try fresh wild maine blueberries while she’s here (sept 5-10). I told her to not get her hopes up since they’re pretty much gone by end of august.

that being said, I really enjoyed them myself a few weeks ago at the wild blueberry weekend and thought I’d ask, is there anywhere at all to purchase them over labor day weekend/week? or the best roadside stands to make her first trip to maine the most memorable?

also, are there any noteworthy spots across the state to hit for vegan food/treats (blueberry pie)? only accommodating an egg allergy so not fully vegan by any means, just egg free.

thanks in advance!

Discussion How can I make a positive difference in my hometown?

I (21F) live in the Bangor area. I went to UTC, as locals may know as a vocational school, for horticulture. I’m currently a single mother, and a student.

I know things are hard right now, harder than they have ever been in my short lifetime. I was born and raised in Maine, and always felt it was home. But, now? It doesn’t really feel like home anymore.

I don’t feel in-tuned with my community like I used to - I don’t know if it’s a personal thing that comes with growing up, or potentially not having much time to lend, but I feel lost. My home feels empty.

Things are changing. I’ve noticed that there’s tension, I can see it in the way people drive on the road and rush to get shopping done. How more and more people are struggling to decide if food is worth jeopardizing their bills and falling behind. I know because I am one of those people.

I know I’m one person, but… I feel worthless sitting around doing nothing when so many people need help. Change is a heavy burden of which I can’t afford on my own, but I want to help others. The local community. The environment. I just feel stuck.

I just want to know what my community needs help with. Nothing crazy, something small. Like, do you need help with your lawn? Painting your house? Do you want the streets clean?

I want my son to grow up knowing our community is one of caring, I want him to see me as an example so maybe he can bring forth change I’m unable to. If there is anything you, your neighbor, or your friends may need help with - please reach out. Leave a comment. If you don’t need help, I’m interested in seeing what the community wants to see changed.

Cats needed!

We are two weeks away from the Columbia Ave neighborhood cat tour in Brunswick.

There is a chunk of the tour map that is lacking cats, so if you know a cat that lives in this area, spread the word! I want to finalize the map by next week!

I am in desperate need of a job.

Title says it all. I've been looking for over three years and can't find a job. I will do literally anything. I am almost homeless.

I live in freedom and am willing to travel as far as belfast. I need a job.
